PDF to Text pulls the real text layer out of a PDF, page by page, in your browser. Useful for turning a document into a script without retyping it. Nothing is uploaded. Nothing is sent to a model. There is no account gate and no generation meter. That is the product constraint for the whole free-tools shelf: Canvas, the File API, or arithmetic on the visitor's machine. A "PDF to text" that quietly called an OCR model or a chat completion would be a generate wearing a utility label.
Versely has no free tier for generation. Every model call costs credits. Browser utilities sidestep that because they cost nothing to run. Use this tool when the job is "get the words out of this file." Do not prompt a video or image model to "read this PDF and write a script."
The extract is the file's own text
The file you choose is read into memory locally. Each page's text content is collected, labelled --- Page N ---, and offered back as editable text. Network off, it still works. That is also why it is actually free: no hardware of ours is in the loop.
What it costs is the other book — credit formulas for per-second video, per-character voice, per-megapixel stills, caption burns, editor exports. PDF to Text is not in that book. If a job is in that book, it is not this tool.
Do not paste pages into an AI video generator and ask for a "script video." You will spend a clip rate to invent a visualisation of a document. You will not get the file's words. The extract already is the artefact.
Empty output is usually a scan
If the PDF was made from a document, this is exact. If it was made by scanning paper, there is no text layer to extract and you will get nothing. A scanned page is a picture of text, not text. Optical character recognition is a different operation and needs a model rather than a parser. A quick test: if you cannot select the text in a PDF viewer, this tool cannot extract it either.
That empty result is not a bug, and it is not a reason to "just run it through Veo." OCR is a generate. It bills. It is also not this page. If you needed a picture of the page, that is PDF to images on the same shelf, also in-browser. If you needed a new page designed, that is a generate, and it will cost credits.
Do not pay a model to read a PDF
Caption burns, Hailuo takes, H3 plates, editor exports: those quote a credit figure before they charge. PDF to Text does not quote a figure because there is no charge. Mixing the two is how teams burn a model on a file job — "just screenshot the pages and generate a transcript." The transcript is the text layer. Copy it. Edit it into a script. Do not generate.
Honesty about which object you are in is the whole decision. A script you will later voice is allowed to start here. The voice pass is the generate. The extract is not.
Spacing is coordinates, not style
PDFs store text as positioned runs rather than as sentences, so word breaks are inferred from coordinates. Multi-column layouts and tables are where that inference struggles most, because reading order is a visual convention the file does not record. Odd spacing is the parser being honest, not a typesetting model being creative.
Do not ask a chat model to "clean this up into a perfect script" as a substitute for reading the extract. You can edit the text. Paying a completion to guess reading order is how a two-column program guide becomes a nonsense paragraph — and it is a generate.
FAQ
Does PDF to Text use credits or a free-generation quota?
Neither. It never spends a credit. The work never leaves your browser. Generation on Versely is a different surface and always bills.
Are my PDFs uploaded to Versely?
No. The tool uses the Canvas and File APIs on your machine. Nothing is sent to a server.
Why did I get no text at all?
Almost always because the PDF is a scan. There is no text layer. This tool is a parser, not OCR.
Can I prompt a model to "read the PDF" instead?
You can waste the credits. You will not get this tool's page-by-page extract. Parse the text layer here. Generate when the job is a generate.
