PDF Watermark overlays a diagonal or centred text watermark on every PDF page, with opacity and size, in your browser. Text stays text. Nothing is uploaded. Nothing is sent to a model. There is no account gate and no generation meter. That is the product constraint for the whole free-tools shelf: Canvas, the File API, or arithmetic on the visitor's machine. A "watermark" that quietly called an image model, a video model, or a chat completion would be a generate wearing a utility label.
Versely has no free tier for generation. Every model call costs credits. Browser utilities sidestep that because they cost nothing to run. Do not prompt a video or image model to "put a watermark on this PDF."
A text object, not a generate
The overlay is drawn onto every page as a text object — selectable, not a baked-in image. Diagonal (the default, at 35 degrees) or centred. Opacity defaults to 0.28 and moves between 0.08 and 0.80. Size defaults to 48 and runs 6 to 120. The default line is DRAFT. Grey, not a brand colour picker.
That is a mark, not DRM. Anyone with an editor can cover it, delete the text run, or crop the page. A determined recipient can still remove it. Treat it as a visible reminder, not protection.
The file you choose is read into memory locally, stamped there, and offered back as a download named {original}-watermarked.pdf. Network off, it still works. That is also why it is actually free: no hardware of ours is in the loop. What it costs is the other book — credit formulas for per-second video, per-character voice, per-megapixel stills, caption burns, editor exports. PDF Watermark is not in that book. If a job is in that book, it is not this tool.
Do not paste pages into an image generator and ask for a "DRAFT stamp." You will spend a still rate and get pixels, not a selectable text object. The watermark already writes Helvetica into the content stream.
Helvetica is the font because the viewer already has it
The stamp is Helvetica, one of the 14 fonts every PDF viewer already has, so nothing extra is embedded. Characters outside WinAnsi — most emoji, many CJK glyphs — are replaced with a question mark rather than aborting the file. That is a glyph limitation, not a prompt problem. Do not ask a model to "fix the Chinese" on a watermark. Change the string to characters Helvetica can draw, or accept ?.
Password-protected files and unusual generators can fail the load. That is a file problem, not a reason to screenshot the pages and generate a stamped lookalike. A model "watermark" is pixels. This tool's watermark is text. Those are different objects when a reviewer later tries to search, copy, or remove the mark.
Credits are for models, not for DRAFT
Caption burns, Hailuo takes, H3 plates, editor exports: those quote a credit figure before they charge. PDF Watermark does not quote a figure because there is no charge. Mixing the two is how teams burn a model on a file job — "just screenshot the PDF and generate a stamped version." The stamp is this page. Screenshot if you need a still for a ticket. Do not generate.
If you needed a header and footer with {page} tokens, that is a different free tool on the same shelf, also in-browser. If you needed a new page designed, that is a generate, and it will cost credits. A watermark here is not a caption style and not a reason to open a generator. Quote credits for generation. Use the browser for the file.
FAQ
Does PDF Watermark use credits or a free-generation quota?
Neither. It never spends a credit. The work never leaves your browser. Generation on Versely is a different surface and always bills.
Are my PDFs uploaded to Versely?
No. The tool uses the Canvas and File APIs on your machine. The file is read into memory, stamped there, and offered as a download. Disconnect the network and it still works.
Can someone remove this watermark?
Yes. It is a text object in the page content, the same as a heading. A PDF editor can delete it, white it out, or crop the page. A watermark here is a visible reminder, not protection, and it should not be treated as one.
Why did some characters become question marks?
The overlay is Helvetica, which only encodes WinAnsi. Emoji, CJK, and many symbols are not in that set. They are replaced with ? so the rest of the file still writes, rather than failing the whole document on one glyph.
