6 apps for a colorway without a reshoot
Photoshop, Photoroom, Pixelcut, Versely, Canva, and Claid recast a locked SKU into a new colorway. Do not reshoot. Proof the dye.
A colorway still is a new dye on a locked object, not a new photoshoot. The silhouette, stitch, label placement, and light stay. The color changes. Six apps will recast that file. Photoshop is the path and the hue. Photoroom is Edit with AI on a listing desk. Pixelcut is generative fill on a phone. Versely is the instruction edit on a locked plate. Canva is the cheap recolor if the file already lives there. Claid is AI Edit in a folder pipeline. This page is that list. It is not a white-pack MAIN roundup. It is not "generate a new bottle."
If the color is not the color you ship, you built a different SKU. Marketplaces notice. Customers return the dye they saw.
What a colorway still actually is
A parent listing has children. Each child is a color, a finish, a print. The still has to match that child.
Amazon Fashion's clothing image style guide still requires every child SKU to have a MAIN that represents that specific color. A navy tee that uses the cream photo as MAIN is a mismatch. The parent can show a default. The swatch cannot lie. Amazon MAIN also wants a photograph of the unit, pure white, about 85 percent fill (G1881, read 20 September 2026). Recoloring a real photo of the same garment is closer to that rule than inventing a new tee. Recoloring a generated cousin is still a generated cousin.
Shopify assigns one image per variant (read 20 September 2026). Extra angles for that color live in the product gallery, grouped beside it. The variant preview is the swatch the customer believes. If you recolor only slot one and leave the gallery in yesterday's dye, the PDP argues with itself.
A honest colorway pass has rules:
- Start from a photograph of a colorway you actually made, or from a photo of the same construction in a nearby dye.
- Change pigment, not construction. Do not grow a pocket. Do not move a logo.
- Quote the color the way the listing quotes it: "Forest Green," not "make it moodier."
- Proof hardware. Zippers, buttons, grommets, and thread often stay metal or stay matching. Decide.
- Proof labels and prints. A recolor that tints the size sticker is a miss.
- Keep the field. If MAIN is white, the recast stays white. A lifestyle recast is a different slot.
Do not use Recraft for this. Recraft is vectors, not photos. A Recraft "navy bottle" is a drawing.
The six apps
1. Photoshop. Start here if you already have a path, a hue/saturation layer, or a Selective Color recipe from last season. Adobe's Photography plan is $19.99 a month, annual billed monthly (Adobe US compare; Photutorial, 30 July 2026). For a simple dye, a masked Hue/Saturation layer is still the cheapest honest tool: the stitch stays, the shadow stays, the color shifts. Generative fill can repaint a panel. It also invents a second seam. Use it when the region is a smooth knit. Avoid it on logos, gingham, and anything with a registration you sell. Save a layer comp per child. Export 2048 for Shopify, 1600-plus on the long side for Amazon zoom. Photoshop is slow. A 40-SKU recast with saved actions is still faster than 40 reshoots.
2. Photoroom. Start here if the listing desk already cuts the pack and you want a sentence, not a mask. Edit with AI is a credit tool. Photoroom's pricing (read 20 September 2026) lists Edit with AI up to 400 generations on Pro, 1,250 on Max, 3,750 on Ultra, drawing from the AI credit pool (8,000 / 25,000 / 75,000). Independent US dollar reads (PulseSignal, 14 September 2026; AI Media Studio, 26 August 2026) put Pro at $12.99 a month ($7.50 yearly), Max at $34.99 ($20.99 yearly). Core retouch and fill are unmetered on paid plans. Use those for dust. Use Edit with AI for "change the shell to Forest Green, keep the zipper silver, keep the label." Shopify sync is still Max and up. Do not sync a recast you have not proofed. Photoroom will not know Forest Green is Pantone 5535. You will.
3. Pixelcut. Start here if the recast is a phone job on a folder of similar SKUs. Pixelcut's pricing (20 September 2026, yearly) lists Pro at $8 a month billed yearly ($10 monthly) with 600 AI credits, unlimited background removal, 1,000 batch exports, commercial license. Generative Fill is 300 per day on Pro, up to 1,200 on Business. That fill is how you paint a panel. It is also how you melt a logo. Unlimited background removal is useful before you recast: isolate, then recolor, then composite back to white. Batch exports are not a colorway brain. You still write the dye per SKU, or you ship 40 "sage" files that are 40 different greens.
4. Versely. Versely sits here because the instruction is the product: keep this plate, change this color. Qwen Image Edit 2511 is 2 credits discounted (3 full), image required, edit-image plus image-to-image. The catalog line is instruction edits on a locked still: object change, style shift, or text fix, rest of the frame kept. Quote the dye. Name what must not move. Nano Banana 2 is 4 credits discounted (7 full) when you also attach a swatch photo as a reference (up to 14). Imagen 4 is shut down (17 August 2026). Do not open a leftover Imagen card. Flux 2 Max is 6 credits, text-to-image only. It will draw a new object. That is a reshoot in a prompt. Use text to image only if there is no plate yet. Versely is not Photoshop's hue layer. It is the app when you would rather type "shell Forest Green, zipper stays nickel, white field stays white" than rebuild a mask. Proof at 100 percent. Then, if you even need motion, Hailuo 2.3 Fast after the still is locked, never before. A crawling wrong dye is a worse listing than a still wrong dye.
5. Canva. Open Canva when the colorway is a post and a PDP crop of the same file, and you already pay for the brand kit. Canva Pro is about $144 a year. Independent reads of the 2026 AI table (The Rundown, 29 August 2026; Moda, 9 September 2026) give Pro up to 2,000 Standard, 200 Premium, or 20 Ultra AI uses a month, shared. Magic Edit can recolor a region. It will also recolor the table. For a locked pack on white, a manual adjust plus a branded 4:5 is safer than burning Ultra on a "make it burgundy" prompt. Export the same pixel file into Shopify. Do not make the Instagram crop the only navy still you own.
6. Claid. Open Claid when the recast is an operation in a pipeline. Claid's pricing page (20 September 2026) bills AI Edit at 4 credits on the web suite, same as AI Photoshoot. The FAQ names Pro at 2,000 credits, with batch processing on Pro and Business. Independent yearly-toggle reads (Pikes, late July 2026) put Essentials at $9 a month billed yearly and Pro at $35. The API page lists AI edit at 2 credits per image. Chain: remove background (1 credit) then edit. Brand kits keep the field consistent. Claid will not catch a zipper that picked up the dye. A human still opens 10 percent of the folder.
How to pick without a reshoot
Write the dye in the words the listing uses.
- You have a path and a season of layer comps: Photoshop.
- The listing desk is already Photoroom: Edit with AI, then a human eyedropper.
- Phone folder, similar shells: Pixelcut isolate, then fill, then a green check against a physical swatch.
- One locked plate, one sentence: Versely Qwen. Attach a swatch if you have one, Banana 2.
- The only file lives in Canva: recast there for the post. Still export a square for the variant.
- An engineer owns 200 children: Claid API. Then QA.
Two tools is a stack. Photoshop plus a camera covers a brand that shoots one dye and recasts the rest with a mask. Photoroom plus Versely covers a shop that cuts on Photoroom and sends the hard panels to Qwen. Do not recast on six apps and pick the prettiest. Pick the one that kept the stitch.
If you can shoot the real dye in twenty minutes, shoot it. Recast is for the colorway that missed the studio day, or the finish that landed after the shoot.
After the dye is locked
Hold the file next to a physical swatch, or next to last season's accepted still. Screens lie. If Forest Green is a named child, the still has to survive that name at thumbnail size.
Update every slot that shows the body color: MAIN or featured, back, on-model, lifestyle. A cream gallery under a navy swatch is a return. Shopify: assign the recast as the variant image. Amazon: upload the child MAIN, do not reuse the parent.
Keep type out of the pixels if the name might change. Overlay "Forest Green" in the editor. A generated hangtag that says Forrest is a different SKU.
When the plate is locked and the job is one instruction, sign up and run the edit. When the job is a hue layer you already trust, stay in Photoshop. The list is six apps. The child is one dye.
FAQ
Is a recast legal as Amazon MAIN?
Amazon wants a realistic image of the product you ship, in the color you ship. A recast of a real photo of the same construction is closer than a generated cousin. A recast of a color you do not manufacture is misrepresentation. When the dye exists in the warehouse, prefer a photo of that dye. Use recast for the missed studio day, then QA against the unit.
Can I recast a Recraft illustration into a "photo" colorway?
You can recolor it. You should not call it a photograph. Recraft is marks and vectors. A marketplace MAIN that needs a photo still needs a photo.
Where does Versely fit if I already have Photoshop?
On the plate you do not want to mask. Qwen for a quoted dye. Banana 2 if you have a swatch reference. Photoshop keeps the hue layer for the SKUs you will recast every season. Versely is not trying to be Actions.
