Brand deals will quote public views after 24 August

The public number gets easier. Rate cards that use it get dumber unless you re-baseline with engaged views.

Brand buyers screenshot the public counter. From 24 August 2026 that counter registers a view the moment playback starts — first frame, every format, including hover-autoplay that used to be an impression. The watch-page number will go up. The number that still means "someone stayed" will not. A rate card that quotes the public figure volunteers to be compared against every bounce-inflated peer in the deck.

YouTube now counts a view from the first frame is the platform note. This post is the commercial one: put the methodology in the insertion order, or the buyer will write it for you.

    What the buyer will quote

YouTube announced the change in a Creator Insider community post on 17 August 2026. The mechanism is one sentence: beginning 24 August, a view is counted when the video begins to play. Shorts already worked that way. Long-form, podcasts and live now join them. Historical totals are not rewritten; new plays on old videos follow the new rule. Studio keeps the old meaning as engaged views in Advanced Mode — a viewer who continued past the first frame and the initial seconds.

A media buyer does not live in Advanced Mode. They live in a screenshot or a media kit PDF. After the cutover those artefacts describe exposure, not stay. Earnings and YPP still sit on engaged metrics — a different argument. The deal argument is simpler: the public number is now a reach metric wearing a view label.

That is useful if you sell awareness. It is a problem if you sell performance and let the buyer treat the two as the same unit. UGC ads for brands is the payer page for the second case: a performance team is buying a testing input they will run on their own ad account. They will still ask "how many views does this channel do?" Answer with a definition, not a bigger integer.

Re-baseline the rate card before they do

Do not wait for the first Q4 brief to notice the inflation. Three numbers belong on every YouTube-shaped kit after 24 August:

Number What it is What a buyer may do with it
Public views First-frame plays after the cutover Screenshot it. Compare you to a peer who bounces.
Engaged views Studio Advanced Mode, old meaning The only apples-to-apples figure across the cutover.
Hook rate / average view duration Whether the open holds The creative diagnostic. Not a substitute for either view count.

Lead with engaged views. Put public views second, labelled as exposure. If you only have public views — a new video, a new channel, a kit you have not rebuilt — say so in one line: "Public views after 24 August 2026 are first-frame plays. Engaged views in Studio are the stay metric we quote against." Silence is how they assume the old 30-second (or Shorts-era) meaning still applies to the big number.

Do not invent a CPM or a multiplier from public to engaged. Attach a dated Studio export of engaged views for the videos in the package. Lifetime public totals after 24 August mix two counting systems — quote a window that sits entirely after the cutover, or quote engaged views for the same window, and label the seam.

The insertion order is the document

A media kit is marketing. An insertion order is the contract. Methodology belongs in the IO, in a clause a lawyer can read without opening Studio.

Minimum language, not legal advice — send it to counsel:

    • Metric. "Fees and delivery reporting use YouTube engaged views as shown in YouTube Studio Advanced Mode, not the public watch-page view count."
    • Window. Name the dates. After 24 August 2026, do not mix the two systems inside one window.
    • Format. Shorts, long-form and live now share a public first-frame definition. They do not share an engaged definition the Help Center has always described cleanly. Say which format the deal is for.
    • Deliverable. If the buy is creative supply — files the brand will run — report on the files, not on your channel's public counter. Channel views are a proxy the buyer reached for when they did not have a better one.

If the buyer refuses and insists on public views, that is a price conversation, not a vocabulary conversation. Public views will be larger and noisier. Either the fee moves with the definition, or you are selling a cheaper unit under the old name. Write the choice down. A Slack "we all know what views mean" is how a make-good appears in January.

Creators who sell a UGC package should go further: the IO should not mention channel views at all. The unit is the hook-tested file. Channel fame is a qualifying story in the email, not a delivery metric in the contract.

Do not celebrate the bigger counter, hide engaged views in an appendix, or compare your new public number to a competitor's pre-August public number. Earnings and YPP did not move; say that once so finance does not hear a raise. The pitch is: here is stay, here is exposure, here is which one this deal uses. If you cannot export engaged views yet, delay the kit rather than ship a public-only PDF.

    FAQ

Will brands notice the public number went up?

Yes, because that is the number they already scrape. They will not notice engaged views unless you put them in the first screenshot. Assume the first email after 24 August quotes public views. Reply with the definition and a dated Studio export, not with a thank-you.

Should I raise my rate because public views inflated?

Not because of the inflation. The unit got easier; the stay did not. Raise if the work changed, the package changed, or the buyer is purchasing exposure on purpose. If they are purchasing performance, keep the fee on engaged views and say so in the IO.

Can I still show lifetime views on a media kit?

You can show them if you label the seam. Lifetime public totals after 24 August mix two counting systems. A 90-day engaged-view window that sits after the cutover is the figure a buyer can defend internally. Lifetime is a story. The window is the metric.

What if the deal is not even on YouTube?

Then do not borrow YouTube's public counter as social proof for a TikTok or Meta buy. Each platform has its own view definition, and YouTube just made theirs more unlike the others in the direction of exposure. Quote the platform the files will run on, or quote the files.
