/free-tools/image-cropper never spends a credit. Do not pay a model to do an in-browser file job. Draw a box, export the selected region at the file's native pixels, download a PNG. That is Canvas and the File API on your machine. It is not a model, not an upload, and not a line on what it costs.
Versely has no free generation tier. Every generate costs credits. The cropper is free because it never touches a model. Confusing those two is how a 4000px still becomes a billed inpaint because you needed the middle of it.
The box maps back to native pixels
The overlay is only a view. Coordinates convert back to the image's natural width and height before the canvas draw. A crop from a 4000px photo is those pixels, not however wide the preview happened to render. The readout on the page says so: crop W×H of naturalWidth×naturalHeight, mapped to native pixels, not the preview size.
Handles are the four corners plus a move drag on the box. Export is PNG — lossless, so the crop does not add JPEG compression on top of the source. Re-encoding as JPEG would soften edges and invent artefacts that were not in the original. If you need a smaller JPEG afterwards, that is the compressor, still in the browser, still zero credits.
Images up to 40 MB. Canvas holds the decoded bitmap, so a 40 megapixel photo needs roughly 160 MB of memory regardless of how small the file is. That is a browser ceiling, not a credit ceiling. Nothing is sent to a server. The tool keeps working with the network off. Same architecture as the rest of free tools: no upload, no account, no watermark.
PNG is a crop, not a cousin file
A generate asked to "zoom in on the label" will restage the label. That is the failure. Cropping is subtraction. Generation is invention. The cropper does not redesign the still. It throws away the pixels outside the box.
If you needed a different composition — product recentred, new room, new light — that is an edit or a new still, and it is billed. If you needed the same composition at a different pixel size, that is the resizer: exact width and height or a platform preset, cover or stretch. Cover is a crop-to-fit of the whole file into a target box. The cropper is a box you draw yourself. They are siblings. Neither invents the subject.
Rotate first if the still is on its side. Image rotator is 90 / 180 / 270 and flips, native pixels, still no upload. Crop after the pixels face the right way. Do not ask a model to "straighten and punch in." You will pay for a cousin.
Credits start when you invent
The cost hub is the map of credit formulas: per second, per thousand characters, per megapixel, per job. Crop is not on that map because the arithmetic never runs on our hardware. A generate that "also happens to come out tight on the bottle" is a generate. You already paid for motion or invention. You did not need to pay for the box.
The expensive habit is sending a pack shot through an image-edit row with the instruction "close-up of the badge." You will get a badge. You will also get a restyled product.
Use the cropper when you already like the pixels and only the region is wrong. Use a generate when you do not have the pixels.

Does the image cropper use credits if I am logged in?
No. It never spends a credit. There is no account on the tool, and logging into Versely elsewhere does not meter a canvas draw. Generation is the thing that quotes a cost before you confirm.
Why is the export a PNG?
PNG is lossless. The crop should not add compression on top of the source. If you need a smaller JPEG, run the compressor on the crop. Do not re-encode as a generate.
Is drawing a 9:16 box the same as generating a 9:16 still?
No. The box is a region of your file. A 9:16 generate is a new picture. Use the cropper when the still is already right. Use a generate when you need a different still.
Why is this free if Versely has no free generation tier?
Because it is not generation. Free tools run on your device; they cost nothing to run. /cost is the catalogue of jobs that do cost credits. Do not mix the two to "save" a crop.
