Multi-shot in one generate when it saves continuity
Omni/Seedance multi-shot is cheaper continuity than three separate jobs. It is worse control than three locked stills.
Use it for a three-beat gag. Do not use it for a product hero that must match a pack shot.
Multi-shot in one generate — Kling Omni's storyboarded cuts, Seedance reasoning across beats inside one pass, Veo's timestamp blocks — is cheaper continuity than three separate jobs. The model sees the whole gag at once. Wardrobe does not recast between "setup" and "payoff" because there was no second casting.
It is worse control than three locked stills. A pack shot that has to match a box cannot be a beat the model invented at second 5. Lock the still. Animate that still. Cut.
This is not Movie Mode. Movie Mode is Versely's chained-scene film from a brief. Omni multi-shot is cuts inside one generate. Different objects; the split is Kling 3 Omni multi-shot is not Movie Mode. This page is when the in-generate version is the right spend.
What you are actually buying
A separate-jobs pipeline: three generates, three identity events, three audio events, an editor, and a hope that the cuts hide the recast. Continuity is your problem. Control is your prize — each shot can start from a still you approved.
A multi-shot generate: one identity event, one soundtrack, cuts the model decides (or that you timed in the prompt). Continuity is the model's problem. Control is the tax — you did not approve frame 0 of shot 2, because shot 2 never existed as a still.
That tax is worth paying when:
- The piece is one joke with three beats (look / realise / payoff).
- The piece is one action seen from two angles that must feel like one take's coverage, not two locations.
- The runtime is inside one model's window (Omni's multi-shot inside ~15s, Veo's 8s timestamp blocks, Seedance's single pass up to 30s).
- Nobody will hold a still of beat two against a pack.
It is not worth paying when beat two is the pack.
The decision
| Brief | Multi-shot in one generate? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Three-beat gag, same person, same room | Yes | Continuity of the face is the joke |
| Reaction → cutaway → reaction | Yes, if the cutaway can be invented | One identity, two angles |
| Hero product, label must match the box | No | Beat two needs a locked still |
| Three rooms, one SKU | No | Each room is a still. Cut in the editor |
| Music-video coverage, six angles, 15s | Omni multi-shot is built for this | Cheaper than six jobs that will not match |
| Brand film, 45s, arc, VO, music | Movie Mode, not Omni | Different object |
| Talking head, one angle, one line | No | There is no second shot to buy |
The lock the still before you spend on motion rule does not get suspended because a model can cut. If a beat has a contractual picture — pack, logo, the character sheet's hero angle — that beat is a still. Pull it out of the multi-shot. Generate the gag around it. Cut.
Cheaper continuity, itemised
Three separate T2V jobs of "the same woman knocks a glass, stares, then laughs" are three women. You can fight that with references. You will still fight audio seams and wardrobe drift. One multi-shot generate is one woman who does three things. That is the saving.
It is also the risk. If beat one is wrong, beats two and three are wrong in the same file. There is no "keep shot 1, regen shot 3" unless the model offers timestamp-level edit (Seedance 2.5's pitch) or you recut. Omni-style multi-shot is all-or-nothing at the file level. Budget a retry of the gag, not a retry of a beat.
Veo timestamp blocks are the controlled cousin: write 0-2s / 2-5s / 5-8s so the cuts are directed rather than improvised. Still one generate. Still worse than three locked stills for a pack. Better than a prose paragraph the model will squash into one wandering camera.
What not to put through it
A product hero. The pack shot is a still. Multi-shot will give you a cousin of the pack. A cousin of the pack is a recall.
A series bible character in a new location they must match tomorrow. Multi-shot continuity is inside the file. Tomorrow's file does not inherit it. Tomorrow needs the character sheet.
A UGC ad whose first three seconds you are testing. If the open is the variable, you want N first shots against one body, not one generate that already decided the open, the middle, and the end. A hook pack is the test. Multi-shot is a finished gag.
A film. Six Omni cuts in 15 seconds is coverage. It is not a 45-second brand film with a VO and a colour arc. Do not quote it as one.
How to brief one when it is the job
Write beats, not a paragraph.
- Beat 1: who, where, the setup (2s).
- Beat 2: the turn, including camera (2–3s).
- Beat 3: the land.
Name what must not change: wardrobe, the glass, the window. Do not name a new room in beat 2 unless you are willing to live with whatever kitchen the model invents. If beat 2 needs a specific kitchen, that is a still.
Keep the whole gag inside the model's duration. Three beats in 8 seconds is a pace. Three beats in 8 seconds plus a fourth "and then she leaves the house" is a squash. Squash is how multi-shot earns its bad reputation.
FAQ
Is Seedance 2.5's 30-second single pass the same as multi-shot?
No. Single pass is one continuous shot. Multi-shot is cuts inside one generate. You can prompt Seedance as if it were coverage, and it may invent cuts. If you want one take, say so ("no cuts"). If you want coverage, timestamp it or use Omni's shot list. Do not confuse a long take with an edited sequence just because both came back as one file.
Can I lock stills and run multi-shot?
As references, sometimes — a character still that conditions the whole gag. As first frames of each beat, no: that is three I2V jobs, which is the control path. Do not feed three hero stills into a multi-shot prompt and expect three I2V contracts. You will get one generate that glanced at your pictures.
Why is this cheaper than three jobs if retries regen the whole gag?
Because the common case is not a failed beat. It is three successful beats that do not match. Multi-shot removes the match tax. Price the retry of the gag against the retry of identity across three files. For a throwaway joke, the gag retry is cheaper. For a pack hero, neither is: you should not be here.
When do I step up to Movie Mode instead?
When the deliverable is a chained film — new setups, a voice over the whole, a runtime past one generate's window, a client who will review a scene plan. Multi-shot is a clip with cuts. Movie Mode is a film with scenes. Do not put a UGC gag through Movie Mode. Do not put a brand film through Omni and call it a cutdown.
