Versely has no free generation tier. The viewer is free because it never calls a model. Prompting an image row to "tell me who made this PDF" is how a document-info question becomes a bill — and a hallucinated author.
Info dictionaries are not a prompt
PDFs carry more than the pages you see. Author names, the software that produced the file, creation and modification times all travel with the document. None of that is visible in a normal reader. All of it is trivially readable by anyone who receives the file. Checking it is how you catch a previous employer's name in the Author field before a client does.
The tool loads the file with pdf-lib in the tab (ignoreEncryption so a lightly locked export still reads), then prints a table: file name and size, page count, Title, Author, Subject, Creator, Producer, Created and Modified (UTC, or an em dash if empty), first page size in points, and that page's rotation.
That is the real dictionary, not the filename. A "final-v3.pdf" whose Producer still says a home copy of Word is the miss this page exists for.
Nothing is sent to a server. Disconnect the network; the table still fills. Same architecture as the rest of free tools: work on the device, no account, no watermark. The PDF guard is 150 MB and 500 pages — a browser-memory cap, not a credit cap. Metadata mode does not render page thumbnails. It reads the info dictionary and the first page's box.
Password-hard files fail with an error rather than a guessed table. A model asked to "read the metadata" will invent a producer. Do not launder a missing field through a generate.
This page only reads
The viewer does not strip. It does not rewrite Title. It does not export a "clean" PDF. If a field is present, you see it. If you needed it gone, you are on a different object.
Rebuilding through the PDF page organiser drops most document-level metadata as a side effect, because the output is a new document rather than a patched copy. Still a local file job. Still zero credits. If you only needed to know who was in Author, stay on this page.
The PDF privacy scanner walks metadata and the text layer for emails, phones, and ID-shaped strings. Pattern matches, not an identity check. Scanned pages have no text layer. Do not confuse a finder with this table, and do not confuse either with a generate that "redacts" by inventing a new layout. Photos are a different format: the image metadata stripper reads JPEG EXIF. That path does not apply to a PDF.
Credits start when you invent a second document
/cost is the map of billed jobs. Reading Author is not on it. A generate that "also happens to look like the spec sheet" paid for invention. You did not need that bill to learn who produced the file.
The Title field and the first-page heading are different strings. Fix the file you have, or rebuild pages locally. Generate only if you need new picture, not a new Author.
Already have the PDF and only need to know what it reveals → viewer. Need different pages → organiser. Need different picture → a generate, on purpose.

Does the PDF metadata viewer spend credits if I am logged in?
No. A pdf-lib read in the tab is not a generate. Logging into Versely elsewhere does not meter it. Credits are quoted on model jobs, before you confirm.
Can I remove Author here?
No. This tool only reads. Rebuild through the page organiser if you need a new document whose info dictionary is mostly empty. Do not ask a model to "strip metadata." You will get a restyled first page.
Why is a field an em dash?
The dictionary has no value for that key. Empty is not a generate failure. It means the producer never wrote Title, or Author, or a timestamp. Do not fill the dash by prompting a model for a plausible name.
Why is this free if Versely has no free generation tier?
Because the work never leaves the device. Generation has no free tier. /cost is the catalogue of jobs that do spend credits. Do not open a model to inspect a dictionary.
