Pick extend or a new generate
Extend only if the last frame is already the keeper. A new idea is a new generate, not more seconds of a miss.
Pick extend or a new generate before you buy more seconds. Video extend continues a clip from its last frame. A generate invents a take. They look like “make it longer” in a chat box. They are not the same job. If the outgoing frame is already wrong — wrong face, wrong pack, wrong camera height — more seconds of that wrongness is the whole purchase.
This is not a length-cap essay and it is not an Omni 1.1 scene-extension explainer. Google’s Omni 1.1 Flash, announced 27 August 2026, can extend in 10-second increments to a cumulative 40 seconds on Google’s surfaces. That is their door. This page is the weekly radio on a keeper you already have: continue it, or roll a new idea.
Extend is identity. Generate is a new idea.
Extend takes the last frame as a contract. Motion that was underway should continue. Colour, face, and set should hold. Drift still happens — each hop is conditioned on the previous ending — but the intent is continuation. You use it when someone already said yes to the take and the only problem is that the ladder ran out.
A new generate takes a prompt (and maybe a still) and samples a new take. It is allowed to restage. It is allowed to pick a new jawline. That is the point when the idea changed: a different line, a different room, a different product angle. It is vandalism when the idea did not change and you are bored of the eight-second cap.
VEO 3.1 Extend Video is the published Google extend row: category extend-video, native audio on, duration locked to 7 seconds, listed max 720p, 40 credits. One seven-second continuation per run. It is not Veo 3.1, which is the generate: T2V, native audio, 4 / 6 / 8 seconds, 4K listed, also 40 credits. Same credit number. Different object. Same 40 credits spent on a new identity is a generate. Same 40 credits spent on seven more seconds of an approved identity is an extend.
Omni’s extend story on Google’s blog (27 August 2026) is scene extension with up to 10 seconds of prior context, in 10-second hops, to 40 seconds cumulative, plus first-and-last-frame interpolation. Versely does not publish an omni-1-1 slug. The Versely Omni rows are Gemini Omni Flash Edit (conversational edit) and Gemini Omni Video (generate). Do not treat Flash Edit as extend. Edit revises a plate. Extend continues a plate. Generate invents a plate. Three radios.
If you are in Flow or Gemini and you press Google’s extend control, you are on Google’s ladder. If you are in this catalog, you pick the extend slug on purpose. “Keep generating in the Veo surface” is not extend. That is more generates.
The test: would you freeze the last frame?
Before you extend anything this week, freeze the last frame of the source.
- If you would print that frame — face, label, hands, horizon — extend is allowed. Write the next beat that fits the hop. Veo extend is 7 seconds. Do not write a three-act sequel into a 7-second continuation. Omni’s Google hop is 10 seconds when you are on that surface. Same rule: one beat.
- If you would not print that frame, do not extend. Fix the source with a new generate (or an edit, if the plate is close). Extending a miss is how a slightly-wrong mouth becomes fourteen seconds of slightly-wrong mouth.
Audio is part of the freeze. Veo extend has native audio on. You are continuing picture and soundtrack together. If the source bed is already wrong, you are buying seven more seconds of that bed. Replace or accept the audio on the source before you hop.
Resolution is part of the freeze. Veo generate lists 4K. Veo extend lists 720p. Extending will not promote an 8-second 4K take into a longer 4K take. It will continue at the extend row’s ceiling. If you picked extend because 4K disappointed you and you wanted “more movie,” you picked the wrong radio. More seconds at 720p is not a restage.
Chain length is a separate honesty. Two hops often hold. Five hops rarely look like the original shot. Drift in colour, face, and set compounds. If you need a 30-second single pass, that is a generate on a row that sells 30 seconds — Seedance 2.5 lists 4–30 seconds, 720p, native audio, 47 credits — not five Veo extends taped together. Extend is for a keeper that ran out. It is not a cheap 30-second.
New idea means new generate
The idea changed if any of these is true:
- The line changed.
- The product angle changed.
- The room or time of day changed.
- You want a different camera height.
- You never liked the take; you only liked “having a clip.”
Those are generates. Some of them are edits if you already have a plate and the change is local (crop, jacket, grade). None of them are extend. Extend cannot recompose a shot from a camera that was never in the file. It can only go forward from the last frame.
A new idea that still needs the same face is not automatically extend either. If the next shot is a different setup, generate (or I2V from a still of that face). Extend is the same setup, more time.
People extend because they are afraid to lose a lucky take. That fear is valid. Honour it by not extending until the last frame is lucky too. A lucky first two seconds and a rotten exit is a trim, not a hop. Cut on the lucky part. If you still need length, generate a new shot and edit. Two good shorts beat one long drift.
People generate because extend felt like a dead end. Also valid — if the source is not a keeper. What is not valid is generating “the same shot but longer” on a T2V row and expecting identity to hold. T2V will sample a cousin. If identity is closed, you are on extend or on I2V from a freeze of the keeper, not on a blank prompt.
The Monday radio
- For each clip that feels “too short,” freeze the last frame. Keeper or not.
- Keeper + need more of the same move → extend on the published extend row. Write one beat that fits 7 seconds (Veo) or the hop you are actually on.
- Not a keeper → new generate (or edit if the plate is close). Do not hop.
- Need ~30 seconds as one thought → a long generate row, not a chain of extends.
- Need a different setup with the same face → still + I2V or R2V, not extend.
Credits do not decide this. Veo generate and Veo extend can show the same 40. Spend them on the object you mean. A new idea billed as an extend is how you pay to continue a sentence you no longer want.
If you need to run a Veo generate and a Veo extend in the same week, sign up and pick continue versus invent before you confirm. Length is not a mood. It is a row.
FAQ
Can I extend a clip I still intend to recrop?
Not yet. Crop or edit first so the last frame is the frame you will actually ship. Extending a window you are about to throw away continues the wrong picture.
Is Omni Flash Edit the same as extend?
No. Flash Edit is a conversational visual revision of a source clip. Extend continues time from the last frame. If you wanted the jacket red, that is edit. If you wanted seven more seconds of the same walk, that is extend. If you wanted a different walk, that is generate.
Why not always generate a longer row instead of extending?
If you do not have a keeper, you should. Seedance 2.5 will sell a 30-second single pass. If you do have a keeper, a new long generate will not preserve it. Extend is how you buy time without putting identity back in the lottery.
