Playfair hairlines vanish at caption size

Title cards and one-line overlays at 48 px and up. Not running subtitles. Not word-timed speech. Not a 22 px burn over a 9:16 pan. The high-contrast Didone is the luxury signal because the thins are thin. At subtitle size, on a moving plate, those thins are one compressed frame from gone.

Hairlines are the design, not a weight you forgot

The live preview loads Playfair Display at 400 and 700. There is no 300 cut to blame. The hairlines are in the letterforms: thick verticals, needle horizontals, the fashion-magazine DNA the role copy names. Beauty, jewellery, interiors, weddings — anything sold on aspiration. That contrast is the point at masthead size. It is the failure at caption size.

Compression and motion finish the job. A 9:16 encode, a busy background, a slow push: the thin stroke shimmers, then drops out. Viewers do not read "editorial." They read broken type. Raising outline width on a Didone does not turn it into a subtitle face. It turns it into a clogged Didone.

Forty-eight pixels is the authored cutoff in the font catalog, not a vibe. Below it, use another row. A title card is a few words, centered, usually on a background block so the serifs survive the plate. Add a title card to a video is that construction: add_video_captions used as a headline, not a transcript. Lock the opening. Write a short string. Set the face to Playfair. Size it like a masthead.

A running subtitle is the opposite construction: many words, timed to speech, sitting in the lower third over motion, often 70–80 characters a beat. Playfair is not in any of the 45 caption presets. Classic and Reveal load TikTok Sans. Headline loads Bebas. Hype loads Oswald. Snap loads Anton. There is no Playfair subtitle group to "just pick." If you type Playfair into an overlay and leave the size where captions live, you have ignored the caveat.

Do not:

• Run speech in Playfair because the brand is jewellery.
• Prompt Ideogram to "set the captions in Playfair Display." That is pixels of letters you cannot reflow.
• Pair 400-weight Playfair, no block, over handheld B-roll, at caption size, and call the shimmer film grain.

Times and Merriweather are different serif jobs

/fonts/times is editorial authority: print-journalism captions, commentary, "the papers said." Its own caveat is adjacent, not identical: serifs at small sizes over video need a solid card; over raw footage the fine strokes shimmer. Times is the workhorse serif with a card. Playfair is the display serif at masthead size. If the line is a quote under a talking head, Times on a block beats Playfair at 24 px.

/fonts/merriweather is the serif built for long screen reading: sturdy strokes that survive compression better than any other serif in the set. Quote cards. Multi-line educational captions. Academic, on purpose. If the job is running text, Merriweather is the honest pick. Playfair on a paragraph is costume.

/fonts/lora is the calmer serif: brushed, readable, warm. Food, books, stationery. It will not carry a luxury open. It will survive a caption better than Playfair, and it will not shout like Bebas.

Pick the face for the size and the job. Playfair does not upgrade a gym plate. Bebas does not become a masthead because you added a cream band. Times does not become Playfair because you lowered tracking.

Load it on a card, not in a subtitle preset

Call the font list. Load Playfair. Size at 48 px or above. Background block if the plate is busy. One line, or two short ones. Then stop. Word-timed speech belongs on a subtitle family. Persistent hooks belong on Headline or overlay sans. Playfair is the open, the chapter card, the jewellery still that needs a wordmark-sized line.

A brand kit can store the choice so the next open does not fall back to Bebas because someone liked the Headline thumbnail. It still does not make Playfair safe at caption size. The caveat does not expire because the kit remembered the name.

Safe zone follows the crop. A centered masthead that cleared 16:9 can collide with chrome after a 9:16 reframe. Card after you lock the ratio. Do not typeset 48 px Playfair on a 16:9 open you will later crop through the thins.

Can I use Playfair for running subtitles if I add a thick stroke?

No. Hairlines fail at subtitle size even with a stroke. The catalog cutoff is title cards and one-line overlays at 48 px+. Speech belongs on a subtitle family.

Is Playfair a caption preset like Headline?

No. None of the 45 presets bind fontId playfair. Headline's base is Bebas. You load Playfair from the overlay font list when the line is a masthead.

Times also shimmers — should I drop all serifs on video?

Times needs a solid card at small sizes; it is still the commentary serif. Playfair is higher contrast and is reserved for large type. Merriweather is the sturdy serif for multi-line cards. The set has three different answers. Use them.

Does generating the title in-frame avoid the 48 px rule?

No. A video model that paints Playfair-shaped pixels still has hairlines, plus you cannot edit the glyphs. Typeset the card on a locked open at 48 px or larger.
