Overlay is geometry on your device
The tool reads the image or the current video frame into memory, cover-fits it into a platform aspect, and draws the regions that interface typically occupies. Nothing is sent to a server. It keeps working with the network off. That is the same guarantee as the rest of the free tools surface: no upload, no account, no watermark, nothing stored after you close the tab. There are fifty-three of these jobs. Credits are for the ones that invent.
These are typical overlays, not a contract. Apps move buttons. Padding changes with iOS version, language, and whether the account has a shop tab. Use the red zones to keep faces and captions out of the chrome. Do not pixel-match a particular build. If a face is inside a red zone it will usually be covered; if it is in the clear it is usually safe.
The inner rectangle is "not usually covered by chrome," not "a good caption box." Platform captions, stickers and your own burned-in titles still compete for that space. Leave more room than the overlay suggests if the line has to stay readable over a moving shot.
None of this is billed. The /cost hub is the map of credit formulas: per second, per thousand characters, per megapixel, per job. A generate that "also happens to come out with the face lower" is a generate. You already paid for motion or invention. You did not need to pay to find the button.
Typical chrome, not a vendor template
This is not the official TikTok or Reels template. It cannot be. Those apps change. The overlays are labelled as typical coverage because that is all a browser can honestly draw.
Do not treat a clear zone as a typesetting spec. Burned-in captions still need their own pass: add captions to a video transcribes speech; a text overlay burns a line you wrote. Preview tells you whether those pixels will sit under the username. It does not write the line, time the line, or restage the speaker.
A video frame is whatever the element composited to the page. The grid is for shot review. It is not a colour-accurate still and it is not a generate.
Do not pay a model to dodge a like button
The failure mode is "the face sits under the share stack, so I will regenerate the shot 9:16 with the person lower." You will get a cousin of the still. Labels drift. Faces drift. You will have spent a credit formula from the cost hub on a job the canvas already does: show you the overlap, then crop or overlay on the keeper.
You need a model when you need new pixels, not a map of the old ones.
- A different composition. Cover-fit and a crop can drop edges. They cannot restage the product. That is an edit or a new still.
- Motion. Image-to-video meters credits per second of output. Safe-area preview does not make the still move.
- A caption that does not exist yet. Preview will not invent a transcript. Transcribe or overlay after you know the chrome.
If the still is the wrong shot, regenerating it to "clear the UI" is an expensive way to keep the wrong shot — now with a different jaw. Fix the crop. Then preview again. Honesty about the input is the whole decision.
Credits are for pixels you do not have
Every generation shows its credit cost upfront. The agent can estimate a planned batch before anything is dispatched. Unused credits roll over while a subscription is active. None of that arithmetic runs for a canvas overlay.
Use Safe Area Preview when you already like the pixels and only the chrome is in doubt. Use a generate when you do not have the pixels. Do not mix the two to "save" a title that was always going to sit under a button.
