Video to GIF in the browser is not a generate
/free-tools/video-to-gif never spends a credit. Do not pay a model to do an in-browser file job.
/free-tools/video-to-gif never spends a credit. Do not pay a model to do an in-browser file job. Pick in and out points, a width and a frame rate. Frames are sought on the video element, drawn to canvas, quantised to 256 colours and packed as a real GIF89a (LZW) — not a renamed PNG sequence, not an upload, and not a line on what it costs.
Versely has no free generation tier. Every generate costs credits. The GIF tool is free because it never touches a model. Confusing those two is how a three-second loop becomes a bill.
A range of a file, encoded locally
The tool reads the video you choose into memory on your machine. Nothing is sent to a server. It keeps working with the network off. Same guarantee as the rest of the free tools surface: no upload, no account, no watermark, nothing stored after you close the tab.
Video may be up to 2 GB. Only the frame you are on is ever decoded; the browser streams the rest. Encoding is heavier. GIF holds every frame as a bitmap, which is why the tool caps duration, frame count and width up front rather than dying halfway through.
Set a range longer than a single frame. Default in/out is the first three seconds, or shorter if the clip is shorter. The download is a .gif named from the source.
Twelve seconds, eighty frames, 256 colours
Hard caps, stated on the page: max 12 seconds, 80 frames, 320px wide by default. Width choices are 240, 320, and 480. Frame rate is 4 to 12 fps (default 8). Frame count is min(80, max(2, round(span × fps))). Delay is at least two hundredths of a second per frame.
Those numbers are what a mid-range laptop survives. A 1080p 60 fps GIF would lock the tab and produce a file nobody can send. The tool refuses a span over 12 seconds with that reason.
GIF is 256 colours. Grain is the palette, not JPEG-style artefacts. Short, small, limited-colour sources work; a 1080p take does not belong in this format. A 10-second 480px clip can still be tens of megabytes because each frame is a full bitmap. That size is the format. It is not a reason to open a video model.
Grain is the format, not a failed generate
None of this is billed. The /cost hub maps credit formulas: per second, per thousand characters, per megapixel, per job. Video-to-GIF is not on that map. A generate that "also happens to come out as a loop" is a generate. You already paid for motion. You did not need to pay for the container.
The encoder is GIF89a with a median-cut palette and a Netscape loop. It will not add detail, restage the product, or invent frames between the ones it sought. If the source is the wrong shot, the GIF is the wrong shot, looping.
Credits are for new pixels
You need a model when you need new pixels, not a different wrapper around the old ones.
- A loop that does not exist yet. Image-to-video or first-last with matching ends. GIF encoding will not invent the motion.
- A cleaner plate. An edit or a new still. Quantising to 256 colours will not rescue a melted label.
- A longer clip. The cap is 12 seconds because of memory. Trim the range. Do not generate a cousin "at GIF length."
If you already have the video, convert. If you do not, generate once, then convert the keeper. Do not pay a catalog row to be a file utility. Use video-to-GIF when you already like the pixels and only the container is wrong.
FAQ
Does video-to-GIF use credits if I am logged in?
No. It never spends a credit. There is no account on the tool, and logging into Versely elsewhere does not meter a canvas encode. Generation is the thing that quotes a cost before you confirm.
Why is the GIF huge, or grainy?
GIF is 256 colours and each frame is a full bitmap, so a 10-second 480px clip can be tens of megabytes. Grain is the palette, not a failed model. Short, small, limited-colour sources work.
Why not 60 fps at the original resolution?
A 1080p 60 fps GIF would lock the tab and produce a file nobody can send. Encoding holds every frame as a bitmap in memory, which is why the tool caps duration, frame count and width up front.
Why is this free if Versely has no free generation tier?
Because it is not generation. Free tools run on your device; they cost nothing to run. /cost is the catalogue of jobs that do cost credits. Do not mix the two to "save" a format change.
