6 apps instead of a social intern

Buffer, Later, Meta Suite, Canva, Versely, and Hootsuite cover intern weeks: schedule, native post, design, clips. Pick by calendar, not a hire.

A social intern is a person with a calendar, a phone, and a login to six accounts. A shop that posts every week often has three Reels, a story, and a comment that sat for two days. Six apps cover that week without putting an intern on the roster. Buffer is the cheap scheduler. Later is the visual calendar. Meta Business Suite is the native IG and Facebook queue, free. Canva is the branded still. Versely is the one-tap clip from a staff photo. Hootsuite is the expensive inbox if the intern's real job was replies. This page is that list. It is not "best social media tool 2026." It is not a pitch to fire a human who already runs the comments well.

Hire the intern when the job is being in the room, answering DMs in the brand voice, filming on the floor, or showing up at the event. Use the six apps when the job is Tuesday's scheduled post.

What an intern week actually is

Most weeks are not a campaign. They are:

    • Three files, three captions, three slots
    • A resize so the same still is 4:5 and 9:16
    • A comment reply that is not "Thanks!!"
    • A calendar so Friday does not surprise anyone
    • A clip if nobody filmed, from a photo someone already took

An intern solves the first one by being there and bills the rest as hours. The apps split the rest. The mistake is buying Hootsuite at $99 a seat because Buffer felt too small, or buying Later Growth because Starter capped posts, when Meta Business Suite already queued the Reel for free.

Calendar in, post out. If nobody made a file, you do not have a scheduler problem. You have a production problem.

    The six apps

    1. Buffer. This is the default if the intern's job is "put the file in a slot." Buffer's pricing page (read 20 September 2026) is per channel. Free is forever, 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel (refill anytime), 1 user. Essentials is $5 a month per channel on yearly ($60 billed yearly, two months free) with unlimited scheduled posts. Team is $10 a month per channel yearly ($120 billed yearly) with unlimited members and approval workflows. You are billed per connected account, not per brand. A shop with Instagram, TikTok, and a Facebook page is 3 channels. Stay here when the intern was a queue. Leave when the intern was a visual planner who lived in Later, or when the only networks are Instagram and Facebook and Meta's own suite is enough.

    2. Later. Open Later when the intern's actual desk was a visual grid, not a list of times. Later's pricing page (read 20 September 2026, yearly, 25 percent off) lists Starter at $18.75 a month billed yearly, 1 social set (8 profiles, one of each network), 1 user, 30 scheduled posts per profile per month, 5 AI credits. Growth is $37.50 a month billed yearly, 2 sets, 2 users, 180 posts per profile, 50 AI credits, inbox, approvals. Scale is $82.50 a month billed yearly, 6 sets, 4 users, unlimited posts, 100 AI credits. A Social Set is one of each: Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, Snapchat. Posts count when they are scheduled, not when they publish. Later is a grid. Buffer is a queue. Do not pay Growth for an inbox if Buffer's community tab already replies.

    3. Meta Business Suite. Open the native suite when the intern only posted to Instagram and Facebook. It is free. Scheduling, inbox, and basic insights live in Meta's own admin. You stay because there is no third-party token to expire. You leave when TikTok, YouTube, or LinkedIn are on the same calendar, or when the intern needed a visual grid that is not Meta's. Native is the honest default for a two-network shop. Paying Later or Buffer to post only to Instagram is how a free queue becomes a seat.

    4. Canva. Open Canva when the intern's morning was "make the square." Brand kit, resize, a caption in the same file. Independent reads of Canva's 2026 AI table (The Rundown, 29 August 2026; Moda, 9 September 2026) put Pro at about $144 a year, with a shared monthly allowance: up to 2,000 Standard, 200 Premium, or 20 Ultra AI uses. Image-to-video is Premium. High-quality video is Ultra. Twenty Ultra clips is a ceiling if you spend the bucket on nothing else. For a bakery that needs one branded 4:5 a week, Canva is enough. Keep Canva for the frame even when the MP4 comes from somewhere else. Buffer lists a Canva integration on every plan, including Free.

    5. Versely. Versely sits here because a lot of intern weeks have a staff photo and no clip. The photo becomes a one-tap: Finger Snap about 18 credits discounted, Mugshot about 20, MJ Dance about 57 if the week is allowed to be a trend. A product photo becomes a short orbit on image-to-video with Hailuo 2.3 Fast at 12 credits for 6s discounted. Captions are a later burn on caption styles, not a generate. Versely is not Buffer. It will not queue Friday. It is not Later. It will not show a grid. It is the app when the intern would have been sent to the back room to film, and you would rather pick a template from a still you already have.

    6. Hootsuite. Open Hootsuite when the intern's real job was a shared inbox, listening, or ten accounts under one admin. Hootsuite's plans page (FAQ copied 20 September 2026) starts paid plans at $99 for Standard, $199 for Professional, and $399 for Advanced, per user per month, billed annually, with Enterprise custom. Standard is up to 10 social accounts. There is no forever-free tier, only a trial. Independent September 2026 recaps (NapoleonCat, 18 August 2026; SocialRails, 4 August 2026) match that $99 / $199 / $399 per-seat ladder. Hootsuite is a command center. It is a bad first app if Buffer Essentials at $5 a channel already scheduled the three posts. You are not buying analytics theater. You are buying seats.

How to pick for a Tuesday

Write the week in one sentence before you open an app.

    • "Three posts, three networks, one person": Buffer Essentials, or Free if 10 per channel is enough.
    • "The grid has to look designed": Later Starter, watch the 30-post cap.
    • "Instagram and Facebook only": Meta Business Suite. Pay nothing until a third network shows up.
    • "The still has to match the brand kit": Canva, then drop the file into Buffer or Later.
    • "We have a staff photo and no clip": Versely one-tap, then schedule the MP4.
    • "The intern was the inbox": Hootsuite, or Later Growth if you already live in Later.

Two apps is a shop. Buffer plus Canva covers a lot of local posts. Meta Suite plus Versely covers an IG-only week with a still-to-clip. Later plus Hootsuite is two calendars. Six apps is a stack you will not open.

An intern who is actually in the shop, filming and answering, is still cheaper than six seats you forget to cancel, if you only needed a human in the comments. The six apps win when the cadence is weekly and the files are already made.

    What still needs a human

A reply to an angry customer. A story from the floor that has to be true. A DM that is a sale. Those are hire days. Do not let an AI reply invent a refund policy.

Captions still matter. Mute is most of the views. Write the first line like a person. Overlay a price so you can change it. Do not bake $12 into a generated still, then schedule it for a week you already changed the menu.

When the week is one photo and a clip, sign up and run the template. When the week is a queue of files you already have, stay in Buffer or Meta Suite. The list is six apps. The shop is one calendar.

    FAQ

Can these six replace a social intern for daily posting?

For a weekly scheduled Reel and two stills, often. For daily stories, DMs, and being in the room, no. The apps remove the Tuesday scramble. They do not remove a person who actually talks to customers.

Do I need Later if Buffer already schedules Instagram?

No. Later is the visual grid and the Social Set. Buffer is the per-channel queue. Using both is how you pay $18.75 and $5 to sit next to the same slot.

Why is Versely next to Buffer and Canva?

Because a still-to-clip week is a different job from "schedule the file" and "design the square." Finger Snap is not a scheduler. Hailuo on a packshot is not Canva Ultra. If your week is files you already have, you do not need Versely. If your week is one photo, you might.
