Bluesky has no AI overlay chrome

Bluesky draws no Shorts-style AI overlay. Captions and safe-area still matter; the keep-out is the player, not a sparkle.

Bluesky has no AI overlay chrome. YouTube Shorts, as of the 27 May 2026 YouTube Blog post, draws an overlay on photoreal or meaningfully AI-altered Shorts. Bluesky does not. There is no sparkle in the corner that you must compose around. That is not permission to park type on the bottom edge. Captions and safe area still matter. The keep-out is the player chrome, the username, and the thumbs, not a platform AI badge.

What is missing, and what is not

Shorts overlay is a platform mark on the picture. Long-form YouTube puts the AI note below the player, above the description. Meta organic uses Made with AI / AI info via C2PA and self-disclosure. LinkedIn has no creator-facing AI toggle; it may show Content Credentials when the file arrives with a signed manifest. Bluesky's composer is a post with a video blob. It does not draw a Shorts-style "AI" chip on your pixels.

Do not read that absence as "no disclosure anywhere." Article 50 still follows the audience and the file, not the app. A deepfake to an EU audience still wants a first-exposure label you put in the picture or the audio. An FTC material connection still wants a conspicuous #ad if someone was paid. NY GBL §396-b still wants an on-ad sentence when a synthetic performer runs in front of New York consumers. Bluesky is not a carve-out. It is a surface without that particular overlay.

Alt text on Bluesky video is a separate, incomplete object. A June 2026 social-app issue tracked alt text and the alt badge failing to display on videos even when the field was filled. Do not treat alt as on-screen captions. Viewers who need type on the picture still need burned-in captions.

Video on Bluesky has been a native blob since 2024, with length and size ceilings that have moved. Bluesky's own August 2026 posts described longer uploads and faster processing in beta. Do not freeze a 2024 three-minute rumour as law, and do not invent a current maximum here. Check the composer on the day you export. The argument of this page does not depend on the second count. It depends on the chrome.

    Safe area without a sparkle

Every feed still covers the picture. Bluesky's timeline is not a full-screen Shorts player by default. Video sits in a post: author row above, engagement row below, sometimes a play control on the poster. Fullscreen is a tap away. Compose for both.

In-timeline. Treat the bottom of the embedded player and the like/repost row as covered. A karaoke block hugging the lower fifth will sit on controls or on the next post's header. Keep the claim in the middle third so a mute autoplay — or a tap-to-play, depending on the viewer's autoplay setting — still has a readable line.

Fullscreen. There is still a scrubber and a close control. There is still no Shorts like-column, which is the good news: you get the right edge back. Do not spend that edge on a CTA you only checked in a 9:16 Reels preset.

Caption timing does not change because the overlay is gone. Two lines. Reading speed the viewer can finish. Product names spelled right. The AI caption generator is 165 language codes and a burn-in. Sidecar SRT will not draw in a Bluesky timeline. If you need a watch-page track, that is YouTube, a different file.

Mute is still likely. Autoplay videos and GIFs can be turned off in Bluesky settings. A viewer who disabled autoplay sees a poster. Frame one plus the burned claim has to work as a still. Hook rate is that still. A logo hold is not.

Do not import Shorts layout habits

A Reels or Shorts master assumes a right-hand button rail and a bottom caption strip. On Bluesky that rail is missing and the strip is different. Faces composed to miss the rail will sit off-centre. Captions composed to sit above the Shorts username will float in empty lower frame, or collide with Bluesky's own controls.

The Shorts AI overlay is also missing, so a legal line you parked "under the badge" on YouTube has no badge to sit under. Put legal marks — Article 50, #ad, NY synthetic performer — in a place a timeline viewer can read without fullscreen. First exposure means first view in the feed, not after a tap.

Repurposing a Short without recaptioning is the usual miss. Re-render or recut. Check on a phone in the Following feed and in fullscreen. Custom feeds and starter packs will show the same pixels with the same chrome. There is no second overlay to plan for. There is still chrome.

Culture is the other import you should not make. Bluesky's default Following feed is chronological. Discover exists and is milder than a FYP. A trend costume that exists to please a ranking function has less to hold onto. Evergreen claims, clear type, a human-sounding post — those travel on reposts. A Shorts-shaped farm cut with burned "WAIT FOR IT" will look like what it is.

Burn type for the post, not for a badge

Lock the cut. Transcribe. Burn two-line captions clear of the embedded player's bottom and of the post chrome. Author any legal card as overlay, first view, not in a cue. Skip the fake Shorts mosaic and the fake like-column padding.

If the same source also ships as a Short, keep two caption layouts. One yields the Shorts overlay and the button rail. One uses the extra right edge and protects the Bluesky timeline controls. Same transcript. Two renders. Add captions to a video after each reframe.

Bluesky has no AI overlay chrome. Captions still win on mute. Safe area is still a phone UI. Do not park type in a badge that is not there, and do not park type in the controls that are.

Caption for the timeline you actually posted to, in Versely.

    FAQ

Does no AI overlay mean I can skip disclosure on Bluesky?

No. The missing object is YouTube's Shorts chip. Article 50, FTC endorsement, and NY synthetic-performer rules follow the file and the audience. Put those marks in the picture when they apply.

Should I still burn captions if Bluesky has a player?

Yes. The timeline is mute-first for a lot of viewers, autoplay can be off, and alt text is not a caption track. Pixels in the file are the type you can count on.

Can I use my Shorts master as-is?

Only if you checked the new chrome. The right-hand rail is gone; the bottom controls are not. Recaption. Do not leave a hole you designed for a sparkle that Bluesky will not draw.
