Stories captions sit higher than Reels

Story chrome (reply bar, stickers) eats the bottom. Place type higher than you would on Reels.

Stories captions sit higher than Reels captions. Story chrome is a reply bar, send field, stickers, polls, link chips, and a top bar with the avatar and timestamp. Reels chrome is a right-hand button rail plus a bottom username/caption strip. A burn that cleared Reels will sit under a Story reply field. Recheck safe area on a Story file. Do not recrop a Reel and hope.

This is the Story placement procedure. It is not a Reels-versus-Stories strategy essay.

Map the chrome before you burn

A safe-area percentage copied from a Reels template is a snapshot of a different app surface. The glossary rule is the right one: chrome moves with OS, caption-field length, and account extras. The only reliable check is against the current interface. Still, the shape of Stories versus Reels is stable enough to plan for:

    Stories (typical 9:16 full-bleed):

    • Top: avatar, name, timestamp, close. Stickers you add (poll, question, countdown, music) often live in the middle or lower-middle because that is where thumbs are.
    • Bottom: reply / send message bar. This band is the usual killer of BASIC captions you parked where a Reel caption lived.
    • No persistent right-rail like/comment/share column in the Reels sense. You gain that side; you lose the bottom.

    Reels (typical 9:16):

    • Right rail: like, comment, remix, share, audio.
    • Bottom-left: username, audio attribution, caption field.
    • Bottom can also grow a shop row or a sponsored chip on paid.

    Procedure:

    1. Write the destination as Story or Reel, not “Instagram.” They are different burns if type sits low.
    2. Open a blank Story on the device you will publish from. Screenshot the chrome with a reply bar visible. That screenshot is your overlay guide for this week, not forever.
    3. Do the same for Reels if you will ship both.
    4. Mark a band on the Story screenshot you will not letter: top avatar row, bottom reply bar, and any sticker you already know you will add.
    5. Mark a higher band where the burn will live on the Story. It will look “too high” on a desktop preview that has no reply bar. That is the point.

Do not trust a 2024 “keep titles in the center 80%” blog. Shop tabs and OS fonts resize the region. Recheck.

Place type above the reply bar on purpose

Burn a Story file. Do not reuse the Reel’s caption render.

    Procedure:

    1. Picture lock the 9:16 cut. If you trimmed a Reel, the child is a new file.
    2. Decide overlay versus captions. If someone spoke, add captions to video (165 codes, BASIC 1× or DYNAMIC 2×). If nobody spoke, text overlay the hook. Stories are full of silent product plates; ASR on silence is a wasted pass.
    3. When you pick position, bias up. Center-low is Reels habit. Center or upper-center is the Story habit that survives the reply bar.
    4. Keep two lines, not three. A third line is what collides with a sticker you add later.
    5. Preview on a phone in the Story composer, not only in the editor. Add the reply field. Add the sticker you actually plan to use. If the burn collides, move the burn, not the sticker — unless the sticker is the CTA and the burn is duplicate. Then delete the duplicate.
    6. Re-export if you moved type. A screenshot of a collision is not a fix.

    Checkable Story tests:

    • Reply bar visible, no sticker: the last caption line is still fully readable.
    • Music sticker or poll added: the line is still fully readable, or you accepted covering it and moved type.
    • Thumb over the send field: you are not hiding the claim under a finger.

DYNAMIC karaoke on a Story is extra motion in a surface that already has stickers. BASIC is the calmer default unless the Story is a word-timed hook and you will not add a poll on top of it.

Recheck after stickers, links, and paid Story chrome

Stickers are why a “good” Story burn dies at publish.

    Procedure after the first preview:

    1. List every extra you will add in the Instagram/Facebook composer: poll, question, countdown, link sticker, location, mention, music, add-yours.
    2. Place them on a copy of the screenshot. If two extras and the burn share the lower third, the burn loses. Move type up again or drop an extra.
    3. Link stickers and reply bars both live low. A URL in the burn plus a link sticker is two CTAs. Pick one low object.
    4. Paid Stories / ads in Stories can add a CTA button the organic reply bar did not have. If this file will run as an ad, preview in Ads Manager’s placement, not only in the organic composer. Recheck safe area on that chrome.
    5. If you add Instagram’s own text tool on top of a burn, you now have two type systems. Do not. Burn in the file or letter in the composer, not both.

Reels you later add to Stories (or vice versa) inherit the wrong band. The correct fix is a second caption render, not a scale. Add captions to video on the Story child with a higher layout. Credits follow the tier again: BASIC 1×, DYNAMIC 2×. Thirty Stories on Glass are sixty base caption renders. What captions cost across a month of clips is that arithmetic.

Do not “nudge” burned pixels in the Story composer. You cannot. Recaption.

Ship a Story file, not a recropped Reel

Aspect can match (both 9:16) and the caption job can still differ.

    Finish order:

    1. If the picture is shared, keep one picture parent.
    2. Burn a Reels child: type lower (but still off the username and right rail).
    3. Burn a Story child: type higher (off the reply bar and planned stickers).
    4. Extract a cover still if you also need a highlight cover — that still is a poster, not a timed track.
    5. Watch each child in its composer. Mute. Phone size.
    6. Archive both children. A later sticker change on Stories may force a third burn if you insist on a poll that lands on the line.

The AI caption generator is the same engine both times. It does not know which chrome you will open. You do.

If you only ship Stories this week, do not use a Reels template “because it is 9:16.” Sit the line higher, then prove it against the reply bar.

Place the Story burn above the reply bar in Versely. Bring a 9:16 keeper and a screenshot of current Story chrome. Do not bring a Reels caption file and a crop.

    FAQ

Can I use the same captioned MP4 on Reels and Stories?

You can. The bottom line will often die under the reply bar, or look oddly high on Reels if you placed for Stories. Two burns from one picture parent is the procedure.

Is there a pixel Y value Versely uses for Stories?

No. Safe area is a check against current chrome, not a permanent coordinate. Preview in the composer.

    Should Stories use DYNAMIC captions?

Only if type is the hook and you will not cover it with stickers. BASIC is the default when the composer is already busy.
