Fan funding thresholds do not move in the 2027 YPP rewrite

Shopping and fan funding stay on the lower bar. Ads and Premium entry is what doubles.

YouTube doubled the door to ads and Premium. It did not double the door to memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks, Super Stickers or Shopping. The honest first milestone is still fan funding.

That is not a consolation prize YouTube forgot to update. It is the part of the 10 August 2026 announcement that says the lower tier is still the on-ramp. Cite the source directly: New opportunities to earn and changes to the YouTube Partner Program — "The entry thresholds for our Fan Funding and shopping products remain unchanged."

What stays at the lower bar

The expanded Partner Program — the tier that turns on fan funding and Shopping, not long-form ads — is still:

    • 500 subscribers
    • three valid public uploads in the last 90 days
    • either 3,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days

That is the same shape as before the rewrite. YouTube's community follow-up also left YouTube Creator Partnerships on the unchanged list. Ads and Premium are the products that move, for new applicants, to 8,000 hours or 20 million Shorts views on 1 February 2027.

    Product 2027 change
Channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks, Super Stickers None on the entry bar
YouTube Shopping None on the entry bar
Ads and Premium revenue sharing (new applicants) Doubles: 8,000 hours or 20 million Shorts views
Shorts ads for people already in YPP New 10 million / 90-day maintenance bar

If your plan for 2027 is "get monetized," you need to say which product. Ads is a different number than memberships. Treating them as one YPP moment is how a channel waits for 8,000 hours with an audience that would already have paid for a member tier.

Why this is still the first milestone

Ads attach to strangers. Fan funding attaches to people who already came back. The 500-subscriber and 3,000-hour (or 3 million Shorts) bar is built for the second group. It is also the bar a small channel can actually see from here.

Three reasons it remains the honest first target after the rewrite:

    • It did not get harder. The ads door did. Anyone starting a channel in late 2026 who treats 8,000 hours as "monetization" is postponing the only product whose threshold YouTube left alone.
    • It is on the same watch-hours track. Hours you bank toward 3,000 still sit in the 365-day window that later has to reach 4,000 (if you apply before February) or 8,000 (if you apply after). Nothing you do for fan funding is wasted if you continue to ads. The current threshold map still holds; only the ads ceiling moved.
    • It is a product you can design. A membership is a cadence, not a CPM. Fan memberships fail when the promise is vague and succeed when the next episode is scheduled. That work is independent of YouTube's ad pool, which is the point of having a first milestone that is not the ad pool.

Shopping is the other unchanged door. It is a catalogue and a commission, not a substitute for either ads or memberships, and it is available on the same lower bar in eligible regions. Use it if you have something to sell. Do not use it as proof you "got YPP" in the sense a founder means when they mean ads.

    What not to wait for

YPP entry doubles in February 2027 for new ads and Premium applicants. If you are close on today's 4,000-hour or 10-million-Shorts ads bar, apply before 1 February. That window is real.

If you are not close, waiting for ads is not a strategy. 8,000 qualified hours is about 22 hours of watch time a day for a year. 20 million qualified Shorts views is a 90-day volume business. Fan funding at 3,000 hours is 9,000 watch minutes a month — still work, still a format that has to hold, and half the watch-time burden of the old ads bar, let alone the new one.

A faceless channel that can produce a weekly episode people return for is a membership candidate at 500 subscribers. It is not an ads candidate at 8,000 hours unless the same episode also holds enough minutes, for enough viewers, for long enough. Those are sequential problems. Solving the second first is how people skip the product YouTube still offers on purpose.

Existing partners are grandfathered on ads entry. They still have to sign the new terms. Fan funding they already have does not get taken away by the doubled ads bar. Shorts-only partners should watch the separate 10 million qualified Shorts views maintenance rule for Shorts ads; memberships are not that rule.

How to treat it as a plan, not a footnote

Write the milestone as a monthly number. 3,000 hours in 365 days is 250 hours a month, or 15,000 watch minutes. At a four-minute average view duration that is on the order of 3,750 views a month — a different business from 20 million Shorts views, and a business you can inspect every week.

Then decide what the member is buying. An episode with a name and a date. A behind-the-scenes cut that actually ships. A live you will be on. If you cannot describe next month's delivery in one sentence, you do not have a fan-funding product yet, and the unchanged threshold will not save you.

The 2027 rewrite made ads scarcer for new applicants. It left the product that does not depend on ads where it was. Build that first.

    FAQ

Did YouTube raise the 500-subscriber fan-funding bar?

No. The 10 August 2026 blog says fan funding and Shopping entry thresholds remain unchanged. Help-centre figures still sit at 500 subscribers, three public uploads in 90 days, and 3,000 qualified hours or 3 million qualified Shorts views.

If I unlock fan funding, am I "in YPP"?

You are in the lower Partner Program tier. That is not ads and Premium revenue sharing. Do not report it to a client or a co-founder as if the ad line had turned on.

Do fan-funding hours count toward the later ads bar?

Qualified watch hours are one running total. Hours that qualify you for memberships are the same kind of hours the ads application reads. The subscriber floor is different (500 vs 1,000), and Shorts views still do not convert into watch hours.

Should I ignore ads and Premium entirely?

No. If you are close to the current ads bar, apply before 1 February 2027. If you are not, fan funding is the milestone you can act on now. Ads remain the higher-ceiling path for formats that hold minutes at scale.
