Apply to YPP before February 2027 if you are close

If you will clear 4,000 hours or 10M Shorts views before 1 Feb 2027, apply on the old bar. Waiting doubles the remaining work.

The ads-and-Premium entry bar for new applicants doubles on 1 February 2027. The current bar is 4,000 valid public watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million valid public Shorts views in 90 days, plus 1,000 subscribers. The new bar is 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. If you will clear today's bar before that date, apply on today's bar. Waiting is not a review of the terms. It is a decision to climb twice as far.

YouTube's 10 August 2026 announcement is the source. Existing partners are not moved onto the new entry numbers. This post is for people who are not in the programme yet. The rewrite itself is YPP entry doubles in February 2027. What follows is only the calendar arithmetic.

What "close" means, in the published numbers

Close means you will actually hit 4,000 hours or 10 million Shorts views, and the subscriber gate, before 1 February 2027 — and you will have applied. Hitting the number in Studio and not pressing apply is the same as missing it.

Convert both current bars to a monthly rate, because that is the only number a production calendar can use.

Watch hours, current bar. 4,000 hours over 12 months is 240,000 watch minutes, or 20,000 watch minutes a month. At a 4-minute average view duration that is 5,000 views a month, held for a year. At 6 minutes it is about 3,300.

Shorts, current bar. 10 million views inside a rolling 90-day window is roughly 3.34 million Shorts views a month, three months running. The window rolls. A burst month that is followed by two weak ones falls back out.

Watch hours, new bar. 8,000 hours over 365 days is 40,000 watch minutes a month — twice the current monthly rate.

Shorts, new bar. 20 million in 90 days is roughly 6.67 million a month — twice the current monthly rate.

That is the whole doubling. Same clocks. Same wall between Shorts-feed views and watch hours. Twice the remaining work if you arrive as a new applicant after the cutover.

    Remaining work is not abstract

Suppose you are at 3,200 watch hours in late August, with a format that already holds four minutes. Remaining on today's bar: 800 hours. Remaining on the February bar, if you are still an applicant: 4,800 hours. The threshold doubled; the remaining work more than doubled, because the hours you already have only count toward the bar that is in force when you apply.

The Shorts version is the same shape. At 8 million qualified Shorts views in the current 90-day window, remaining on today's bar is 2 million; remaining after the cutover is 12 million, and the window will have rolled. If you are on pace for 10 million before 1 February, apply. If you are at 2 million with no path to 10 million, the date is not your problem — the format is.

Do not wait for a better month of analytics. After 1 February the bar for new applicants is twice as high.

Apply is a date, not a vibe

YouTube will not migrate an unpublished application. You have to be eligible and submit. Check the actual qualified / valid numbers in Studio, not the public counter on the watch page. Then apply while the current bar is the one the form is using.

A working check, once, this week:

    1. Subscribers at or above 1,000, or a realistic path to 1,000 before 1 February.
    2. Valid public watch hours at or above 4,000, or a monthly run-rate that fills the gap before 1 February.
    3. Or: valid public Shorts views at or above 10 million in the current 90 days, or a run-rate that fills that gap inside the window.
    4. The rest of the published eligibility list in Studio.

If (1) and (2) are true, or (1) and (3) are true, apply. Do not sit on a completed bar to "see how Q4 goes."

If neither path completes before 1 February, you will apply on the new bar. Plan against 40,000 watch minutes a month or 6.67 million Shorts views, not against a memory of 4,000 hours. If the format holds three minutes, the production system is a faceless YouTube channel. If it does not, you were always on Shorts.

The only decision this page owns: if you will clear today's published bar before 1 February 2027, apply on today's bar.

    FAQ

What if I hit 4,000 hours in January but do not apply until February?

Then you are a new applicant under the rules in force in February. The hours you already have still count as qualified watch hours, but the bar they have to clear is 8,000. Apply when you are eligible, not after the date because the date felt ceremonial.

Does this apply if I am already in YPP?

No. YouTube said the entry update will not impact creators already in YPP. Grandfathering is status on the old entry bar. It is a different question from this one. This page is for people who are not in yet and are close on 4,000 hours or 10 million Shorts views.

Can I switch from Shorts to watch hours to beat the deadline?

Only if the format can actually hold long-form attention, and only if the remaining watch hours are reachable before 1 February. A Shorts channel cannot mint 4,000 long-form hours in a month of panic uploads. The sequential hybrid — Shorts to 1,000 subscribers, then long-form for hours — still works, but the switch has to happen with enough calendar left for the hours to land.

What if I have the hours but not 1,000 subscribers?

Then you are not close yet. Both the current and the 2027 ads-and-Premium bars still need the subscriber gate. Apply when subscribers and 4,000 hours (or 10 million Shorts views) are in. Use the remaining calendar to finish the line you are missing, not to wait on a line you already have.
