YPP entry doubles in February 2027 for new applicants

New applicants need 8,000 qualified watch hours or 20 million qualified Shorts views. Existing partners are grandfathered.

On 10 August 2026 YouTube published the first major rewrite of Partner Program entry since 2018. From 1 February 2027, a new applicant for ads and Premium revenue sharing needs 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.

That is double the current 4,000 hours / 10 million Shorts views. Existing partners are grandfathered on the entry bar. Fan funding and Shopping stay on the lower thresholds. If you are close on today's numbers, apply before 1 February 2027.

The source is YouTube's own post, New opportunities to earn and changes to the YouTube Partner Program.

What doubles, and what does not

The 1,000-subscriber floor does not move. The performance numbers do. YouTube now calls them qualified watch hours and qualified Shorts views — the same idea as the old "valid public" totals, with the usual exclusions for private, unlisted, deleted and non-organic traffic.

Path Until 31 Jan 2027 From 1 Feb 2027 (new applicants)
    Ads and Premium, long-form 1,000 subs + 4,000 qualified watch hours / 365 days 1,000 subs + 8,000 qualified watch hours / 365 days
Ads and Premium, Shorts 1,000 subs + 10 million qualified Shorts views / 90 days 1,000 subs + 20 million qualified Shorts views / 90 days
Fan funding and Shopping 500 subs + 3,000 hours or 3 million Shorts views Unchanged
Already in YPP Current status Entry bar does not re-apply; new terms still need a signature

Two other lines in the same announcement get mixed in and should stay separate. Shorts ads and Premium sharing for people already in YPP will, from the same date, need 10 million qualified Shorts views in the trailing 90 days — a maintenance bar, not an entry bar, and missing it does not kick you out of the program. That is a different operating number, covered on its own. This page is the door.

YouTube also said creators already in YPP must review and sign the new terms in Studio, effective 1 February 2027. Grandfathering is not "do nothing." It is "you do not have to re-qualify on 8,000 hours." Unsigned terms are a payout problem, not an hours problem.

Why "apply before February" is a real window

The new bar applies to new applicants from 1 February 2027. An application submitted and accepted against the 4,000-hour / 10-million-view rule before that date is an existing partner on the far side of it.

That only matters if you are actually close. "Close" means the current threshold is in reach on a calendar that ends in January, not a hope that volume in December will invent a year's watch time. Qualified watch hours are a 365-day window. Qualified Shorts views are a 90-day window. You cannot compress a year of long-form hours into six weeks. You can, on Shorts, put three strong months against the 10 million figure if the channel is already in that band.

    The honest triage:

    • Already in YPP. Sign the terms. Do not re-plan entry. Watch the separate Shorts maintenance bar if Shorts ads are a line you care about.
    • Over 1,000 subscribers and over ~3,000 hours or well into the millions of Shorts views. Finish the current bar. Apply. Do not wait to "be ready" for 8,000.
    • Nowhere near 4,000 hours or 10 million Shorts views. The February date does not create a shortcut. You were always on the 2027 numbers. Plan the monthly rate against 8,000 hours or 20 million views and treat fan funding as the first cheque.

YouTube's current monetization thresholds still describe how the two paths refuse to share progress. Doubling both of them does not merge them. Shorts still do not count toward watch hours. A faceless channel that splits production across both clocks will miss both at the higher bar just as it did at the lower one.

The monthly rate is what you actually run

8,000 hours in 365 days is about 22 hours of qualified watch time a day, held for a year — double the ~11 hours implied by 4,000. 20 million Shorts views in 90 days is about 222,000 qualified Shorts views a day for three months, or roughly 6.7 million a month.

Those are not aspirations. They are the shape of the business if ads and Premium are the point and you apply after 1 February 2027. Average view duration still divides the long-form path: at four minutes of average view duration you need on the order of 10,000 views a month to bank 8,000 hours in a year, not the 5,000 that 4,000 hours implied. Padding runtime to chase hours still backfires if people leave, because qualified hours are watch time, not upload time.

The first 1,000 subscribers still gate both ads paths. The subscriber number did not double. Getting there on Shorts and then switching the production line to long-form remains the one sequential hybrid that is not two under-resourced strategies at once — and only if the format can actually hold minutes when you switch.

Fan funding at 500 subscribers and 3,000 hours (or 3 million Shorts views) is still the earlier milestone YouTube did not touch. If the honest product is memberships, Super Thanks or Shopping, the 2027 rewrite is not your constraint.

What AI volume does not buy you

Generation makes uploads cheap. It does not make qualified hours. Four mediocre videos with a 90-second average view duration still lose to one that holds four minutes. After February, the losing version is twice as far from ads.

It also does not buy you a pass on review. Clearing a number and failing monetization policy is the expensive miss, and it is unchanged by the new arithmetic. Get the application in on the current bar if you are close. Build the format that holds if you are not.

    FAQ

If I am already in YPP, do I need 8,000 hours to stay?

No. YouTube said the update will not impact creators already in the program. Sign the new terms in Studio. The 8,000-hour / 20-million-view figures are for new applicants from 1 February 2027.

    Does the subscriber requirement change?

Not for ads and Premium. It stays at 1,000. Fan funding stays at 500 subscribers plus the lower watch or Shorts bar.

What is a "qualified" watch hour?

YouTube's current term for the public, eligible watch time that counts toward YPP — the successor name to valid public watch hours. Private, unlisted, deleted and non-organic traffic stay out. Studio is the authority on your total.

Can I apply in January and finish the hours in February?

The application is judged on the totals at review, against the rule in force on the date that applies to new applicants. If you will not have 4,000 qualified hours (or 10 million qualified Shorts views) and 1,000 subscribers before 1 February 2027, you are on the doubled bar. Do not treat January as a queue that locks in the old numbers without meeting them.
