One caption family per series
Pin one of nine groups and keep it. Changing family every post reads as a different show, not a refresh.
One caption family per series. Caption Studio is 45 CSS presets in nine groups of five. The five inside a family differ in colour, position, or corner radius. The family is the face. Changing family every post reads as a different show, not a refresh. Pin one group. Vary the variant if you must. Do not browse the catalogue in public.
The family is the recognition
Viewers do not read your caption spec. They recognise a drawing.
Classic is TikTok Sans with a stroke, top or bottom. Paper is a Montserrat card. Ink is an Inter card on a darker mood. Halo is Poppins Bold with a ring. Hype is Oswald, loud. Signature is Pacifico, a note. Headline is Bebas, a chyron. Snap is Anton, word-timed pop. Reveal is TikTok Sans, typewriter. That is the nine. The catalogue map lives elsewhere. This page is the series rule: pick one, write it down, stop switching.
A house style is a family plus one variant, held across every episode. Switching Snap Gold on Monday for Ink Sheer on Wednesday for Hype Red on Friday throws away the recognition captions do in a feed before anyone reads a word. The scroller thinks they opened a different channel. Sometimes they did: a guest editor “tried a new look.” The series bible should have forbidden it.
Variants exist so a family can fit a brand without leaving it. Hype varies on stroke colour. Snap and Reveal vary on accent colour. Card families vary on card colour, radius, and position. That is a small surface. Use it. A weekly accent swap inside Snap is still Snap. A weekly family swap is a new show.
Keeping captions on brand across every video is the operational version of the same pin. This page is why the pin is a family, not a hex you re-pick from 45 every upload.
Nine groups, not forty-five decisions
Forty-five sounds like a browsing problem. It is not, once the series has a family.
Answer three questions once, in the bible, not per post:
- How hostile is the footage? Chaotic gym and street → Halo or Hype (heavy ring). Normal talking-head → Classic (thin stroke). Unknown or mixed b-roll → Paper or Ink (a card). Product plates with labels already in frame → a card or a stroke, never a sheer glass-like variant.
- Are the words a transcript or the hook? Transcript → Classic, Paper, Ink. Hook performance → Snap, Reveal, Headline, Hype.
- What is the voice of the channel? Editorial → Headline. Personal → Signature. Loud → Hype. Neutral → Classic or Ink.
Three answers converge on two or three families. Pick one. The other two are fail-overs when the plate is genuinely different — a once-a-quarter outdoor special, not a Tuesday whim.
Word-timed is a different decision from styled. Snap and Reveal are not “Classic with animation.” They change the pace of reading. Pin Snap only if the series is a spoken-hook show and the mute pass stays readable. Pin Reveal only if the voice builds to a last word. Do not pin Snap as the brand default for a twelve-minute tutorial series. Karaoke is a hook tool. A series that is mostly body should not wear a hook family on every sentence.
VEED’s list is not this list. 21 BASIC at 1× and 9 DYNAMIC at 2× are the burn-in ids on add_veed_captions. Corpo is not Classic. Glass is not Snap. If the series burns through VEED, pin a VEED id the same way: one BASIC look for the show, DYNAMIC only on the organic hook cut if that is the format. Do not switch beans for fusion because a competitor’s Reel popped.
Changing family looks like a different show
Feeds identify channels in the first second: face, set, type. Type is the one you fully control after a generate. A new family is a new typesetting dialect. Viewers treat dialect shifts as a new programme. That is useful when you are launching a second show. It is expensive when you meant to publish episode fourteen.
Symptoms:
- Comments asking if you rebranded
- A/B tests that cannot isolate the hook because the caption drawing also moved
- Guest editors shipping Halo on a Classic series because the picker was open
- Paid and organic twins that no longer look related because one cut “needed more energy”
Energy is not a family change. Energy is a tighter first line, a hold, a crop. If CPS is already maxed, Snap will not save it. If contrast failed, Ink’s card will. Those are different knobs. Do not use the catalogue as a mood board on a live series.
A second family is allowed as a named exception: season title cards in Headline, then back to Classic for speech; a trailer in Snap, then the episode in Paper. Write the exception in the bible. Unnamed switching is how the show dissolves.
Safe area is not a reason to change family. If bottom Classic hits TikTok chrome, use the top variant inside Classic. Position is a variant field in several groups. Family is not the placement control.
Brand-kit hex and font are not a reason to hop families every time the kit updates. Map the kit onto the pinned family: accent on Snap, card colour on Paper, stroke on Classic. Brand kit binds hard on overlays and caption styling. It does not ask you to sample all 45.
Pin it, then stop browsing
Write three words in the series bible: family, variant, position. Example: Classic / base / bottom, or Snap / Gold / top if the mouth owns the lower third. That is the spec. Editors do not get a fourth word called “or whatever looks cool this week.”
Production loop:
- Pick the family once from the three-question shortlist.
- Preview the base variant on five seconds of this series’ actual footage, not a demo card.
- Lock the variant for brand colour. Contrast still has to hold on the worst plate; if it does not, change treatment inside the family (solid card instead of sheer, thicker stroke) before you leave the family.
- Burn. 165 language codes, BASIC 1× or DYNAMIC 2× on the VEED path if that is the door. Studio CSS if that is the session. One door per series, unless you have a reason.
- Spot-check names and numbers. A consistent family on a wrong SKU is still a wrong SKU.
The AI caption generator will apply whatever is selected. Add captions to a video will not remember last week’s family unless you do. Pin it in the kit, in the workflow, in the bible. Default Glass is how a series accidentally becomes DYNAMIC 2× and a different face.
One caption family per series. The five variants are the refresh. The other eight groups are other shows.
Pin the next series look in Versely.
FAQ
Can I switch variant without looking like a new show?
Yes. Variants stay inside the family: colour, radius, position. That is a refresh. Switching Snap for Paper is a new drawing. Viewers read it as a different channel.
What if one episode is a gym floor and the rest is a studio talking-head?
Use the top or heavier-stroke variant inside the pinned family if it holds. If it does not, a named exception (Halo for outdoor specials) belongs in the bible. Do not silently change family for one post and forget to change back.
Are the 45 Studio presets the same as VEED BASIC and DYNAMIC?
No. Studio is 9 × 5 CSS. VEED is 21 + 9 burn looks. Pin inside the list you actually render. Do not name Classic on a VEED job or Glass on a Studio job.
