    CNC shop video: tolerances, not stock footage

    Engineering buyers discount generic manufacturing b-roll on sight. A shop-floor capability demo format, plus the ITAR, EAR and NDA rules on what stays out.

    Watch a buyer on a contract manufacturer's website. They are not reading the copy. They are looking for a number, a machine list and evidence that somebody in the building understands print tolerances. A slow-motion shot of coolant spraying off a tool, colour-graded and set to a synth track, tells them nothing — worse, it tells them you bought a stock clip, which is a signal about everything else.

    The asymmetry is useful. In most categories production polish helps; here, an unpolished ninety-second clip of one real part being cut, measured on a CMM and read out to four decimal places beats an expensive brand film, because the audience is technical and specificity is the only currency they trade in.

    What makes this hard is not the filming. It is that much of what a good shop machines cannot be shown at all — export-controlled work, NDA'd customer parts, and the shop's own fixture and process IP. The format has to be designed around what is publishable, not edited down to it afterwards.

    What an engineering buyer is screening for

    Four things, in roughly this order:

    • Can you hold the tolerance? Not "tight tolerances" — a number, on a feature, with the measurement shown.
    • Have you cut this material before? Inconel, titanium, 17-4 PH, 7075, PEEK. Naming the material is naming the problem: chip evacuation, work hardening, thermal growth, tool life.
    • Do you have the envelope and the machines? Travels, spindle, axes, pallet or bar capacity. Buyers recognise machine models on sight and read them as a capability statement.
    • Will quality documentation be a fight? First article inspection, in-process checks, CMM reporting, material certs, traceability. This is where jobs go wrong and buyers know it.

    None of those is answered by b-roll. All of them are answered by one part, filmed properly.

    The capability demo: one part, one process, one number

    Ninety seconds maximum. Pick a part you own outright — a demo part, an internal fixture component, something you make for stock — so nothing in frame belongs to a customer.

    1. Open on the number. Typed on screen and said aloud in the first three seconds — the feature, the tolerance and the run length. If your headline capability is throughput or lead time instead, open on that. One claim, stated first.
    2. Raw stock and the print. The barstock or billet in hand, and a print you are entitled to show — your own drawing, with the controlled dimension called out.
    3. Setup. Workholding, fixture, probing, offsets. Thirty seconds of setup does more for your credibility than any amount of cutting footage, because setup is where a shop's competence lives and nobody films it.
    4. The cut, in real time. Real audio — chips, coolant, spindle. Do not speed-ramp it. An accelerated cut is a cycle-time claim, and a buyer who works that out discounts the whole video. If the cut is long, cut away and come back, and say you have.
    5. Inspection. CMM or gauge, with the reading visible. This is the most persuasive frame in the piece and almost no shop includes it: a number on screen matching the number you claimed at the start.
    6. The finished part, and what happens next. Deburr, finish, documentation package. Close on how to send a print for quote.

    Light it with a small panel inside the enclosure rather than fixing it with a grade afterwards, and put the machine make and model on screen as typed text — buyers search for it. Keep narration flat and technical; voiceover added in the editor can be corrected without a reshoot.

    What stays out of frame

    Read this before the camera comes out, because the failures here are not marketing failures.

    Export-controlled work. ITAR governs defense articles and their technical data under the State Department's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls; the EAR governs dual-use items under the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security. Both treat the release of controlled technical data as an export, and a release to a foreign person can occur without anything crossing a border. Publishing a video is about as broad a release as it is possible to make, and you cannot cure it afterwards by arguing the information is now public.

    So if a job is controlled, nothing about it appears on camera. Not the part, the print, the fixture, the traveller, the machine while it runs that job, or the whiteboard behind it. If you run controlled work alongside commercial work, film in a designated area on a designated day with controlled jobs cleared out, and have somebody who knows the classification of current work walk the shot list first.

    NDA'd customer parts. Most commercial work is covered by a confidentiality clause broader than people assume, often extending to the existence of the relationship. Blurring in post is not a control — it fails in the exact frames where a part is legible. Substitute rather than obscure: film a part you own.

    Your own process IP. Fixture design, workholding strategy, tool paths, speeds and feeds, the approach that lets you hold a feature competitors struggle with. A rival's process engineer watches your capability video more closely than any buyer.

    The background. The recurring leak in shop-floor video is not the subject, it is everything behind it: a CAD model on a monitor, a traveller with a customer name and part number, a production board, a scheduling screen, a shipping label. Sweep the frame before every take, and again in review — a mandatory pass like checking a video before you publish it belongs in this workflow.

    Upstream of all of it: controlled or confidential material should not be uploaded to third-party tooling as part of a content workflow. The security and data questions to ask of AI content tools is the list to work through first.

    Say only the certifications you actually hold

    Certifications are the shorthand buyers use to filter, which makes them the thing shops stretch. The distinctions matter and buyers audit them.

    Put the certificate number and expiry on screen if you make the claim, and rebuild the clip when it renews. A lapsed certification visible in a two-year-old video is an avoidable embarrassment during a supplier audit.

    Where generation belongs, and where it does not

    Resist the instinct to reach for generated manufacturing footage. Generic b-roll is precisely what this audience discounts, and producing more of it faster does not fix that. Generated video also cannot depict your machines, your parts or your tolerances, and any frame implying it does is a false capability claim.

    Where it does earn its place:

    • Establishing and atmosphere shots you cannot schedule. Your building in winter, a dusk exterior — clearly illustrative, never presented as a specific job. The b-roll generator covers it.
    • Process-flow explainers. Quote, print review, programming, first article, production, inspection, ship. An animated sequence of your actual workflow tells a buyer whether you will be easy to work with; the explainer video generator handles it.

    • Captions, burned in, because much of this is watched with the sound off.

    Never let a model render a drawing, a dimension, a tolerance, a certificate number or a GD&T callout. Those are typed layers over real footage — timed text overlays keep them under your control and let an engineer correct a term without regenerating a clip.

    FAQ

    We machine almost entirely under NDA. What can we film?

    Your own fixtures, your own tooling, demo parts cut for the purpose, and the processes rather than the products. A video about how you approach a difficult setup, filmed on a part you invented for it, demonstrates the same competence without touching customer work. Keep two or three house parts designed to show specific capabilities.

    Is it worth filming inspection if our CMM software looks dated?

    Yes. The audience is not judging the interface, they are checking that the measurement happened and that the number matches the claim. An ugly screen capture with a real reading beats a polished animation of a measurement, because an animation could say anything.

    Can we show a customer's part if they give us permission?

    If the permission is written, from someone with authority to give it, and the part is not export-controlled, then yes — and it is excellent content, because a named customer is the strongest credibility signal available. Get the scope in writing: which part, which channels, how long. Verbal permission from a friendly engineer is not the same thing.

    How long before this produces anything?

    Slower than consumer categories, because the audience is small and the buying cycle long. The realistic return is not a viral clip; it is that the three people evaluating you find footage answering their technical question, and you skip a round of qualification. Build the library part by part, not as a campaign.
