Check safe area before you caption
Preview TikTok, Reels, and Shorts chrome — including YouTube’s May 2026 AI overlay — then burn captions.
Preview the platform chrome, then burn. Safe area is the part of a 9:16 frame TikTok, Reels, and Shorts will not cover with their own UI. YouTube’s Shorts AI overlay, announced on the YouTube Blog, 27 May 2026, is extra furniture on photoreal files: a chip on the video, not a line under the player. If you caption first and discover the collision in the feed, you recaption. Check, place, burn.
This is a pre-caption check. It is not a policy explainer, and it is not a generate. The picture is already the take. You are about to composite type. Find out whether the line will be readable where the chrome actually sits.
Chrome is part of the frame
A 1080×1920 export is not a finished layout. Short-form players draw on those pixels: a right-hand action column, a bottom identity row, a description field, sometimes a shop tab or a live badge. Anything you park under that furniture is not visible to the viewer, however good the transcript.
The mistake is treating a safe-area diagram as a spec that stays put. It does not. The region a platform occupies moves with the OS version, with how much room a longer caption or a localised username needs, and with whether the account has extra chrome a generic template never drew. A percentage copied from last year’s Figma file is a snapshot. Check against the current UI.
Typical collisions, before any AI label:
- Karaoke captions hugging the true bottom. The first word of the hook is the one the username stack eats.
- A price or URL as burned type in the lower third. Same band as the caption field.
- A face sitting in the lower third with captions across the chin. Chrome plus type is two layers on the mouth.
- A 16:9 lower-third, then a crop to 9:16. The line moves to the middle of the tall frame, or it is cut. Crop, then caption.
TikTok, Reels, and Shorts are not the same map. TikTok’s composer caption grows with the post text. Reels has a username-and-audio row. Shorts has subscribe and a description field that is not TikTok’s. Place once per destination, or place in the intersection: mid-lower, off the right rail, not on the last slice of the frame. Do not steal a TikTok preset and upload it to Shorts as if the chrome were shared.
Safe Area Preview paints typical TikTok, Reels, Shorts and YouTube regions onto a frame in the browser. It does not spend a credit. It is not the official app template. Apps move. Use the red zones to keep faces and future caption blocks out. The inner rectangle is “not usually covered,” not “a good caption box.” Leave more room than the overlay suggests if the line has to stay readable over a moving shot.
If the face is already in the chrome, recrop or regenerate. Do not solve a covered forehead by shrinking type until it is unreadable. Safe area is a picture problem first. Captions inherit whatever you leave them.
Shorts overlay is extra furniture
On 27 May 2026 YouTube described how it would improve AI labels for viewers and creators. Photoreal or meaningfully AI-altered Shorts get an overlay on the video. Long-form gets the same idea below the player, above the description. Unrealistic, animated, or slightly altered work can stay in the expanded description. If the creator does not disclose and systems detect significant photorealistic AI use, YouTube can apply the label anyway. Studio can usually update it, with exceptions for YouTube-internal tools (Veo / Dream Screen), verified C2PA fully-AI, or a Trust and Safety review.
YouTube also said labels alone do not impact recommendations or monetization eligibility. Treat the overlay as a visibility problem in the edit, not as a ranking tax you must “design around” with a fake badge.
The overlay is an overlay label: a platform drawing on the picture. You do not style it. You do not turn it off because it spoils the grade. You leave a corner.
Practical consequences for captions:
- A talking-head generate is photoreal enough to plan for the chip. A hard cartoon may never pay this tax. Plan the talking-head as if the overlay is always there.
- YouTube has not published a pixel spec. Do not invent one. Design to objects. Check the live player.
- Long-form AI label sits off the picture. The same master cropped to a Short inherits a new on-video chip. Two layouts.
- Do not burn your own “AI” badge in the same corner the player already labels. You do not control the chip. Two marks stacked is a mess, not extra compliance.
Article 50 (applicable 2 August 2026) is a different duty: EU deployer labelling at first exposure, with Commission icons. YouTube’s overlay is not that mark. They can stack. Place any EU line where Shorts chrome is not, or you will cover your own disclosure with theirs.
Beauty filters, colour grade, AI scripts and outlines, obvious animation: YouTube’s May 2026 post does not require the photoreal overlay for those. Do not add a chip “to be safe” on a motion-graphics cut that was never photoreal. Do not skip the check on a Veo talking plate because you “only used AI for the script.” The picture is the test.
TikTok and Reels have their own disclosure furniture. This page is not those policies. The shared production fact is: every feed draws chrome, and YouTube Shorts added an on-video AI chip in May 2026. Your caption block has to miss all of it.
Preview, then place, then burn
Order:
- Lock the take. Ratio, duration, audio. If you will recrop 16:9 to 9:16, do that first. Safe area is relative to the frame you will upload.
- Preview chrome. Phone in the platform’s preview if you have it. Otherwise Safe Area Preview plus a look at a live Short / Reel / TikTok on the same account type (shop tab or not). Note the bottom stack, the right rail, and — for photoreal Shorts — a corner for the AI overlay.
- Place the caption block in the leftover rectangle. Mid-lower is the usual home. Off the right rail. Above the username. Not on the mouth. Not on the pack label.
- Preview the look on a few seconds of this clip. Versely captions: 21 BASIC at 1×, 9 DYNAMIC at 2×, 165 language codes on
add_veed_captions. Caption Studio: 45 CSS presets, 9 groups × 5. Contrast against this background. A loud preset in a dead zone is still dead. - Burn. Add captions to a video or the AI caption generator. Output is an MP4 the feed cannot switch off. That is the point of burned-in captions on mute autoplay.
- Watch muted, on a phone. If the first line sits under chrome, move the block and burn again. Do not “fix it in the TikTok caption field.” The on-file line is what the muted viewer sees.
Do not burn, then preview. Preview is free. A second caption render is not. What captions cost across a month of clips is the 1× / 2× multiplier at cadence. Discovering a collision after DYNAMIC at 2× is how a placement miss becomes a bill.
Do not shrink type to fit a bad box. If the leftover rectangle is too small, the picture is wrong: face too low, pack too low, overlay and username stacked on the only readable band. Recrop. Raise the subject. Leave air.
Karaoke / word-highlight families need a stable home. They travel the line, not the frame. If the first token sits in the overlay zone, the hook is the token that disappears.
Authored overlays — a hook you wrote, a price — are not captions, and they use the same real estate. Place them in the same pass. If the overlay and the captions say the same sentence, delete one of them. If they fight for the mid-lower band, one of them moves up.
What a safe-area miss actually costs
On a muted feed the covered line is the whole message. You paid for transcription, for a look, and for a generate whose face or pack is now under a button. Reviewers in ads manager will bounce it. Viewers will not unmute to find out what the username is sitting on.
The recaption is a full burn, not a nudge. Burned type is pixels. There is no “raise 40px” on a file that no longer has a cue list. You reopen the transcript, move the preset, render again.
The regenerate is worse: a new talking-head because the mouth was in the lower third. That is a video bill to fix a layout you could have seen in a browser overlay. Safe Area Preview exists so you do not spend that credit on a restage.
Platform auto-captions do not save a miss. TikTok’s default type and YouTube’s auto-captions are the platform’s spelling, the platform’s box, the platform’s collision with the same chrome. If the line matters, you burn it where you checked.
EU-facing realistic synthetic media still needs a first-exposure mark. That mark is not a subtitle cue and it is not YouTube’s chip. Put it where both sets of furniture are not, then caption the speech as you would any other cut.
Check every recrop. A 16:9 YouTube master whose AI label sits below the player becomes a Short whose label sits on the picture. The caption block that was legal on the master is not a Shorts layout. Two files, two previews, two burns if both go out with type.
If you need the studio to preview placement, transcribe, and burn, sign up. Chrome first. Type second. The feed will not move its buttons for your lower third.
FAQ
Is YouTube’s Shorts AI overlay a ranking penalty?
YouTube’s 27 May 2026 post said labels alone do not impact recommendations or monetization eligibility. Treat the overlay as chrome you must not cover with captions, not as a reason to avoid photoreal generates.
Can I use last year’s safe-zone percentage?
Not as a contract. Chrome moves with OS, language, and account features. Preview the current UI — or a typical overlay in Safe Area Preview — then burn.
Should I caption, then check the live post?
Check first. A live miss is a recaption. Burned-in captions cannot be nudged in the publisher. Preview, place, burn, then upload.
