Thumbnail from the keeper, not a new still

Extract a frame from the cut you will post. Do not text-to-image a face that is not in the video.

Pull the thumbnail from the keeper. Do not text-to-image a face that never appears in the video. Generate a video thumbnail is extract_video_frames with frame_count 1 at a timestamp you choose. Identity has to match the file. A prettier stranger is a different ad, and on a talking-head it is a lie.

This is the frame-from-cut procedure. It is not a YouTube-thumbnail design essay.

Name the slot, then name the file

A Shorts cover, a Reels preview, a YouTube watch-page poster, and a paid-social image are different sizes. The pixels still have to come from the cut you will play.

    Procedure:

    1. Write the destination: 9:16 cover, 16:9 YouTube poster, 1:1, or a paid 4:5. Aspect is a slot, not a vibe.
    2. Lock the video first. A thumbnail of a take you will recut is a poster for a film that will not exist. Picture lock, then the still.
    3. Use the shipping file, not an earlier generate. If you merged hook + demo + CTA, extract from the merge. If you upscaled, extract from the child. A frame from the 720p parent next to a 4K upload is how the poster disagrees with playback.
    4. If the slot is 16:9 and the cut is 9:16, decide whether you are letterboxing, cropping, or making a separate 16:9 poster from a 16:9 frame. Do not stretch. Do not extract a 9:16 frame and upload it as a 16:9 YouTube thumbnail.
    5. Write the claim the poster must carry. If the first frame of the file already carries it, you may not need overlay. If it does not, you will letter the still, not regenerate the video.

    Reject these parents:

    • A miss you liked “for the thumbnail” but will not post. Viewers who click through to a different face bounce.
    • A pack-only plate when the video is a person, or a person-only plate when the video is a pack demo. The poster is a contract.
    • A logo card. That is an end frame, not a click image.

The AI thumbnail generator is a tool surface. This editing task is the extract. If you needed a fully designed graphic that is not a frame, that is a different job — and it still should not invent a presenter.

Scrub the keeper for a frame that already exists

You are hunting a still that is already true.

    What to look for:

    1. Eyes open. A blink is a bad poster.
    2. Mouth not mid-ugly phoneme unless that phoneme is the joke.
    3. SKU readable if the SKU is the product. A pretty blur is a click-out.
    4. Room to letter. If the face fills the safe area, your overlay will sit on a nose.
    5. The same wardrobe, hair, and pack as the rest of the cut.

    Procedure:

    1. Play the locked file at 1× once. Note two or three timestamps where the picture could be a poster: 0:01.2 face+line, 0:04.8 pack in hand, 0:07 result.
    2. Step frame by frame across each candidate. Pick the frame, not the second.
    3. Pause. Squint. If you cannot tell what the video is, keep scrubbing.
    4. Prefer a frame that includes the proof: the pour, the result, the pack in the same hand as the video. A beauty close-up that never appears is a magazine cover, not this job.
    5. Write the timestamp down. You will pass it as start_time with frame_count 1.

Do not pick frame zero by habit. First frame of a generate is often a settle. First frame after a merge may be the hook, which is good, or a fade, which is not.

Do not pick a rewatch spike from analytics and then extract from a different cutdown. The spike was on a file. Use that file.

Extract one frame. Do not T2I a stranger.

extract_video_frames returns an image URL of a frame that was in the video. That is the point.

    Procedure:

    1. Open generate a video thumbnail.
    2. Point at the locked video URL.
    3. Set start_time to the timestamp you marked. Optional end_time is unused when you want one frame; frame_count is 1.
    4. Set output_format to what the destination accepts.
    5. Run the extract. Lightweight job. Still estimate_cost if the parent is huge; the usual UGC file is not.
    6. Open the still at 100%. Confirm it is the frame you thought. Off-by-one timestamps happen.

    What you will not do:

    • Text-to-image a “better” face. If that face is not in the video, the thumbnail is false. On ads, that is also a trust problem. On organic, it is a click-through lie.
    • Image-to-image the extracted face into new lighting, a new jaw, or a new pack. You are no longer on the keeper.
    • Generate a 16:9 cinematic title card with a model and upload it as the custom thumbnail for a 9:16 UGC take of a different person.

If the extracted frame is soft, you may upscale the still as a still job. That is allowed because it is the same pixels, bigger. If the frame is the wrong beat, scrub again. Do not prompt a new beat.

Quality is capped by the source. A 720p generate yields a 720p still. Extract after upscale if the poster must be sharp. Do not extract a soft frame and hope the platform will “enhance” it.

If you have no usable frame — every candidate is a blink, a blur, or a pack that does not match — the video is not thumbnail-ready. Fix the cut. The poster cannot be more honest than the file.

Letter the claim on the still, then match the upload

Overlay on the image is a third step. It is not a reason to regenerate the clip.

    Procedure:

    1. If frame one already has a burned hook line and that line is the claim, you may ship the still as-is. Check that the burn is not sitting under platform chrome in the thumbnail slot (YouTube posters crop differently than Reels players).
    2. If you need a claim on the poster that is not in that frame, add text on the image, not a new caption pass on the video. Two-line maximum. The same words as the video’s hook, or you have two ads.
    3. Keep type off faces and off the SKU letters.
    4. Export the still. Do not recompress it through a screenshot.
    5. Upload to the slot you named in step one. 16:9 YouTube custom thumbnail is not the first frame of a Short.
    6. Play the video from that thumbnail. Face match, pack match, claim match. If any fail, you extracted the wrong frame or lettered a different script.

Paid placements often use the first frame of the video file as the image if you do not supply one. If that first frame is a logo, you failed the hook and the poster. Trim the logo hold, then extract.

Archive the still next to the keeper. A later recut needs a new extract. Do not reuse a poster from take four on take twelve because the click-through was fine. Take twelve has a different face.

Pull the frame from the cut in Versely. Bring a timestamp. Do not bring a prompt for a person who is not in the file.

    FAQ

Can I generate a custom graphic instead of a frame?

Yes, as a different job, and only when identity does not have to match a real on-screen person. If a face is in the video, extract that face. Do not T2I a stand-in.

Is the first frame good enough?

Sometimes, if the first frame is the hook. Often it is a settle, a fade, or a logo. Scrub. Pick the frame.

Should I thumbnail an early generate I liked more than the final cut?

No. The poster is a contract for the file you post. Extract from that file.
