    Thumbnail

Also called Video thumbnail, Click image, Poster frame.

A thumbnail is a still chosen or generated to represent a video in a feed, not the video itself and not a 16:9 generate that happens to look like a title card.

The job is a still at the size the platform actually serves. YouTube's custom thumbnail is a different object from the first frame of the file. Using the first frame is a default, not a strategy, and a generated 9:16 hook is the wrong aspect for a 16:9 poster.

Extracting a frame from the finished clip is one route: the pixels already match the video. Generating a poster from a prompt is another route, and it will drift from the footage unless you condition it on a real frame. Text overlay on that still is a third step, not a reason to regenerate the clip.

The editing task is generate video thumbnail. The tool surface is the AI thumbnail generator. Aspect-ratio is the size constraint; it is not the thumbnail job.

    In practice

    • Decide the destination first — a Shorts cover and a YouTube watch-page poster are different sizes.
    • Prefer a frame from the actual file when identity has to match; generate only when the frame does not carry the claim.
    • Letter the claim as overlay on the still, not as a new video generate.

    The mistake to avoid

Exporting the first frame of a 9:16 hook and uploading it as a 16:9 YouTube thumbnail. The object was the wrong size for the slot.
