Seeding product is not paid usage
Product seeding is sending free goods hoping for a post. Paid usage is a licence to run the file as an ad. Gifting does not buy the MP4.
Product seeding is sending free goods hoping for a post. Paid usage is a licence to run the file as an ad, on named channels, for a term. Gifting does not buy the MP4. A thank-you story is not a dark post. A box on a porch is not a Spark code.
The word "seeding" also means something else on this site. Seeding in the glossary is community placement of a finished video — subreddits, Discord, group chats — as a contribution rather than an ad. That is not paid usage either. Two senses, zero licences. This page is the product-box sense first, with the community sense named so the nouns do not collapse.
Product seeding is a gift, not a grant
A gifting campaign sends free product with no cash fee and usually no contractual guarantee of a post. Coverage rate across the batch is the metric. Individual silence is not a failed invoice. There was no invoice.
What the box can produce:
- A chance at organic coverage in their voice.
- A relationship you can later pay properly.
- A disclosure duty if they do post. Free product is a material connection. The FTC counts it as compensation (ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/ftcs-endorsement-guides-what-people-are-asking).
#giftedis not optional because no wire fired.
What the box cannot produce by itself:
- Organic rights on the brand grid.
- Paid rights from the brand ad account.
- Spark Ads authorization.
- Whitelisting.
- A replica grant for new lines in their face.
- Exclusivity against a competitor's box.
Silence in a gifting thread favours the creator. "Feel free to use this!" under a story is still not a term, a territory, or a paid-use line. Ask for a contract if you need the file. Pay if they want to be paid. File-only UGC creators exist for this. 66% of creators offer UGC services (Kapwing 2026; creator.co). Use that market. Do not scrape the gift.
Product seeding is upstream of content. Community seeding is downstream of a finished video. Do not mix the trackers. Boxes sent is one column. Licences signed is another. Threads posted in a subreddit is a third. Paid spend is a fourth.
Paid usage is paper with channels on it
Usage rights say where a brand can run a creator's content, for how long, and in what form. Organic and paid are different grants even when the file is the same. A contract silent on paid usage should be read as not granting it.
Write, if you need them:
- Deliverable — length, SKU, captions, openings.
- Organic use — named brand channels, term.
- Paid use from the brand account — platforms, term, territory. This is the line product seeding never reaches.
- Spark — per post, window, renewal.
- Whitelist — handle, platform, term.
- AI — whether a generate off their face is allowed.
"In perpetuity" without channels is how a clip outlives the SKU. Do not put it on a packing slip. Do not put it in a gifting email as a joke.
Ads with UGC still show about 4× click-through and about 50% lower CPC, and 86% of brands say UGC lifts ad performance (Kapwing 2026; Billo). Those lifts attach to licensed footage or to Sparked identity. They do not attach to a warehouse pull. Running a gifted story as a dark post is paid use you do not have. Dark does not mean secret from the creator. It means unpublished on your Page. The creator can still find the ad. So can their lawyer.
A generated stand-in "in the style of" a gifted creator is worse. That is a replica problem plus a fabricated endorsement. Article 50 (2 August 2026) wants a perceivable label on realistic synthetics for EU audiences. A label on stolen likeness is not a licence. NY GBL §396-b (9 June 2026) does not cover identifiable twins anyway.
Community seeding is also not a media buy
Glossary seeding is placing finished content into communities as a genuine contribution. It earns distribution before or without paid push. It is slow. A fresh brand-linked account gets removed. There is no batching equivalent for trust.
That tactic still does not grant you:
- The right to run the same file as an ad if a creator made it and you only had permission to post it in a Discord.
- The right to skip disclosure if the file is a paid endorsement. Native-looking in a subreddit is still paid if money or product changed hands. Moderators may also just ban you.
Reformat natively per community. A subreddit and a server expect different framing. That is production. It is not usage. If the file is yours — you generated it, you own the SKU stills, you did not steal a face — community seeding is a distribution choice. If the file is theirs, you are back in the licence.
Content velocity does not rescue either sense of seeding. Shipping more boxes does not create more licences. Shipping more identical files into more Discords does not create trust. Volume on a dead tactic is faster removal.
Keep the box, buy the ads rights separately
Gifting remains a valid top of funnel. Send product. Disclose in the brief. Measure coverage. When a post works, open a paid conversation that names the file and the spend. Until then, keep it off the ads manager.
If you need ads while you wait, make files you own. The UGC video generator assembles a talking plate plus product inserts from assets you have rights to. Keep pack photography real. Seedance 2.0 is 69 credits, 4–15 seconds, 1080p, native audio, for a hold that does not require their face. Caption for mute. Do not put their name on it.
If you need community distribution of your file, seed as a member, not as a landing page. That still is not paid usage. Paid usage is the insertion order and the creator contract.
Two tests on the campaign sheet: "Would we run this if they asked us to take it down tomorrow?" If yes, you think you have a licence — show it. "Would we run this if they never posted?" If yes, you are making your own file. Do not wait for the box.
If the week is "gifts are not insertion orders," sign up and keep seeded product out of the ads account until usage is signed.
FAQ
They posted the gifted product. Can we boost it?
Not without a grant that covers paid use, and on TikTok not without a Spark code if you want Spark. Their organic post is theirs. Boosting or dark-posting a rip is paid usage you did not buy.
Is community seeding a substitute for usage rights?
No. Community seeding is where your finished file goes. It does not create rights in someone else's file. It does not replace an insertion order.
Does a seeding contract that says "content welcome" include ads?
Read it as organic chance, not paid use, unless paid use is a separate clause. Welcome is not a channel list. Welcome is not a term.
