    CTA card meaning

Also called Call-to-action card, In-video CTA, Action card.

A CTA card is an on-screen prompt to act — click, shop, follow, swipe — shown during the clip, unlike an end screen that only appears at the finish.

The card is a request, not a caption. 'Link in bio,' 'shop the SKU,' 'follow for part two,' a YouTube info card, a Spark-style product tag — something the viewer can do. Text overlay is the wider craft of burning words into the frame; a hook line is not a CTA because it does not ask. Hook-body-CTA is the structure that saves the ask for the last beat; the card is the object that carries it.

Timing is the whole skill. Drop the card in the first second and you have covered the hook. Drop it only after the file has already lost the people who would have acted and you are decorating a skip. Completion rate grades whether they were still there to see it. Safe area grades whether the platform chrome covered it. A YouTube card that sits under the player UI is a card nobody clicked.

End screens are a different slot: last five to twenty seconds, other videos, subscribe, a URL, on a platform that actually draws them. Short-form often has no such object, so the CTA has to live in the pixels — burned in, in the caption, in the pinned comment. Do not generate a cinematic lower-third and call it a card if the feed will crop it off.

    In practice

    • One ask per file. Two cards is two jobs, and the viewer will do neither.
    • Place the card inside the current safe area, then check it on the phone UI, not on a desktop preview.
    • If the platform has no mid-roll card, burn the CTA into the last beat instead of hoping the caption is read.

    The mistake to avoid

Putting the CTA on frame one. The card then competes with the hook, and the hook is the only reason anyone would obey the card.
