It is a watermark, not a manifest. Content credentials (C2PA) hash the exact bytes of a file and break the moment those bytes change, which is what a platform re-encode does on upload. SynthID is built to sit in the pixels or the samples and still be readable after compression, crop, and the ordinary social pipeline. That is the point of an invisible mark: the viewer never sees it, a detector still can.
Google applies it across Gemini image and video families, Lyria music, and other DeepMind generative stacks. Veo outputs on Vertex-class tiers are the usual example in creator docs. A SynthID hit is a claim that this file, or a descendant of it, came through a Google generator that embeds the mark. It is not a claim about who published it, whether it was disclosed, or whether it is a deepfake of a real person.
Article 50's provider duty is machine-readable marking of synthetic audio, image, video and text, with a grace period to 2 December 2026 for systems already on the market before 2 August 2026, and watermark-detection interoperability running to 2 February 2027. SynthID is one vendor's answer to that class of duty. It does not replace the deployer's visible or audible label at first exposure, and it does not travel as a green tick the way a C2PA manifest does in a supporting viewer.
In practice
- Do not crop a corner to 'remove the AI mark.' SynthID is not in the corner.
- A detector hit is provenance about the generator, not a substitute for the on-screen label the viewer is owed.
- If you need a mark that survives upload, an invisible watermark is the class of tool; a C2PA manifest is not.
The mistake to avoid
Treating a SynthID detector result as Article 50 compliance. Providers mark; deployers who publish a deepfake still owe a label a person can perceive.

Watermark
Watermark meaning: a mark on generated media that identifies the source, either visible on the picture or embedded in the file.
Content credentials
Content credentials are a cryptographically signed record of who or what made a file and what was done to it, attached by a hash computed over its exact bytes — which is why the record breaks the moment those bytes change, rather than degrading gracefully.
Provenance
Provenance is the recorded origin of a file — who or what made it and what was done to it — carried as a watermark, a signed manifest, or both.
Article 50
Article 50 of the EU AI Act is the 2 August 2026 transparency rule: labels on certain AI interactions, synthetic media, and public-interest AI text.
Diffusion model
A diffusion model generates by starting from random noise and removing a little of it at a time until a picture or clip is left behind.
