7 tools for big type on mute video
Canva, CapCut, Submagic, Versely, VEED, Premiere, Captions.ai put large type on mute video. Pick by canvas, timeline, templates, Headline, NLE, or phone.
Mute video is a type problem. The soundtrack does not play. The first second has to be readable at arm's length. Seven tools will put large type on that file. Canva is the brand canvas. CapCut is the timeline plus auto captions. Submagic is the big-bold word template. Versely is Headline (Bebas, top) or Snap (Anton, timed). VEED is font size plus dynamic presets. Premiere is Essential Graphics. Captions.ai is active-word scale on a phone. This page is that list. It is not a Versely landing page. It is not a font essay.
Big type is not the same job as karaoke. Karaoke times each spoken word. Big type is a hook you can read without the clock. A packshot with no speech still needs a line. A talking head may need both: a Headline row on top and a quieter transcript below. Most apps will not let you run two families in one file. Plan for that.
Mute video is a type problem
Mute autoplay is the default on Reels, TikTok, and Shorts. If the claim is only in the bake, the claim is not in the impression. Type in the pixels is the impression.
Size is a trap. Bigger type that sits under the username is worse than slightly smaller type that clears chrome. Safe area is part of typography. Designers trained on web hero type oversize captions, then collide with buttons.
Weight beats a thin logo font. Hairline serifs die in recompression. A condensed bold with a stroke survives. Brand books that ban strokes are thinking print. Mute video is allowed to be uglier in service of reading.
Three objects, again:
- Transcript captions. Speech, timed, maybe karaoke. Needs audio.
- Hook overlay. One authored line for the whole clip, or timed lines you wrote. Needs copy lock. Does not listen.
- Title row. Display face, often top, often all caps. On Versely that is Headline, Bebas Neue,
kind=subtitlebut the job is a hook, not a transcript.
This list mixes all three because mute viewers do not care which object saved them. They care whether they can read.
The seven tools
1. Canva. Start here if the mute clip has to sit on a template the shop already uses. Logo, 4:5 or 9:16, a line of type you can still edit next Tuesday. Canva Pro is the design seat most teams already pay. Independent 2026 reads of Canva's AI table (The Rundown, 29 August 2026; Moda, 9 September 2026) put Pro around $144 a year. Confirm the live Canva pricing page before you quote. Big type in Canva is a text box. It is not auto captions. You write the line. That is a feature on mute product clips with no speech. It is a limitation if you needed a transcript. Stay in Canva when the type is a headline on a branded frame. Leave when the type has to follow a mouth.
2. CapCut. Open CapCut when the mute file still needs an edit. Auto captions for speech. Manual text layers for a hook the speaker never said. You can make type large. You can also ship the default bounce by accident. Independent 2026 reads (SocialRails, 18 July 2026) put Pro at $19.99 a month or $179.99 a year. Official help (2 April 2026) lists auto captions on Pro. CapCut does not publish a public dollar table (20 September 2026). Stay when the mute cut is jump cuts plus a giant first-line hook plus captions. Leave when the giant type needed to be a locked Bebas row across a whole series, and every editor in CapCut picks a different face.
3. Submagic. Open Submagic when "big type" means their bold word-by-word templates. The AI caption page (20 September 2026) sells 35+ animation templates that highlight, bounce, and fade word by word, and says captions are burned in for sound-off viewing. Pricing is Starter $19 a month monthly ($12 yearly) for 15 videos, Pro $39 ($23 yearly) for 40 plus Brand Kit and custom fonts, Business $69 ($41 yearly) for 100. Big type here is a template energy. It needs speech. A silent product loop will not grow words. Author an overlay in CapCut or Canva for that file, or pick a different Submagic tool. Do not expect karaoke to invent a headline.
4. Versely. Versely sits here because mute type is often a family you pick on purpose. For a hook nobody said, Headline is Bebas Neue, tall caps, top, kind=subtitle. Base preset bebas_top. Variants move color, stroke, and seat (bottom, yellow fill, red stroke, center). Do not dump a transcript into Headline. That is how a title row becomes a paragraph of whatever the mic heard. For spoken words that still need to read large, Snap caption group is Anton, timed pop, bottom. Classic is white on black stroke, the everyday social caption, still readable when you do not want motion. The AI caption generator burns the family. Overlay is a different agent job: one authored string, whole duration. Credits are not dollars. BASIC 1×, DYNAMIC 2×. Versely will not replace Canva for a carousel cover. It will not replace Premiere for a broadcast lower third. It is the app when the mute file is already the cut and you want Headline on top or Snap on the speech without opening a design seat.
5. VEED. Open VEED when you want font size, outline, and a burn toggle in a browser. Official help (auto subtitles, 20 September 2026) lets you set font, size, outline, shadow, background, animation, auto highlight. Autofit-style controls live in many captioners. VEED's dynamic presets (Glide, Pulse, Glide2) are motion, not size. Size is the font control. PulseSignal (13 September 2026) puts Creator at $12 per user per month billed annually with unlimited auto subtitles, Pro at $22 with multiple brand kits. Recheck veed.io/pricing. VEED will also add a separate text layer for a headline. Keep the headline and the transcript as two objects. A giant subtitle track is not a title card.
6. Adobe Premiere. Open Premiere when the mute type has to match a broadcast graphic pack. Essential Graphics, .mogrt titles, speech-to-text captions as a track. Adobe Premiere (read 20 September 2026) is $22.99 a month on annual billed monthly for the single app, $69.99 for Creative Cloud Pro. Big type here is a title you animate, not a social karaoke pack. Stay when the mute cut is a cutdown of a film that already has house graphics. Leave when the job is a 9:16 hook and nobody will open a sequence.
7. Captions.ai. Open Captions when the mute talking-head was shot or imported on a phone and you want active-word scale. Style help (read 20 September 2026) documents AI Emphasis with a supersize option, active word color, autofit, and templates. Karaoke is on Free (one template, Eclipse). The public pricing page (20 September 2026) cards Max at $24.99 and 500 credits. Max is generative video. Do not buy Max to supersize a word. Free or Basic ($9.99, 200 credits on help, 17 September 2026) is the typesetting seat. Autofit keeps captions the same size. Disable AI Emphasis if you wanted uniform big type instead of random supersize.
How to pick size without covering the product
Mute the phone. Screenshot three frames: bright, mid, dark. If you squint, the feed will not squint with you.
- No speech, need a line: Canva, CapCut text layer, Versely Headline or overlay, Premiere graphic.
- Speech, need readable type: CapCut, VEED, Versely Classic, Descript (not on this list on purpose).
- Speech, need performing type: Submagic, Snap, Captions.ai active word.
- House graphic already in Premiere: stay.
Bigger is not better past the chrome. Shift up. Two short lines beat one giant line that wraps under the chin.
Do not generate the headline into the video model's pixels. Painted Bebas is not Headline. You cannot restyle it next week.
Two tools is a mute stack. Canva plus CapCut covers a branded silent product clip. Versely Headline plus Classic covers a series. Seven tools is a type shop you will not open.
After the type is big
Proof on device brightness mid and low. Compression will eat the stroke. If the stroke vanishes, thicken it.
Offers change. A giant $12 in generated letters is a recut. Overlay a price you can edit.
When the mute file is locked and the job is Headline or Snap, sign up and burn the family. When the mute file is a Canva post, stay in Canva. The list is seven tools. The thumb is one second.
FAQ
Is big type the same as captions?
Sometimes. A transcript can be set large. A hook overlay is not a transcript. Headline is a title row. Name the object. Then pick the tool.
Can I put Headline and Snap on the same Reel?
On Versely those are two families. Many apps refuse two subtitle styles in one project (VEED's help is explicit). Plan a top title as overlay and a bottom transcript, or export twice. Do not hope the picker will mix them.
What font should I use if I only pick one?
A heavy sans with a stroke. On Versely, Anton for Snap, TikTok Sans for Classic, Bebas for Headline. Logo script is for the end card, not the mute hook.
