The 25-Step Brand Video Launch Checklist
A 25-step brand video launch checklist covering pre-production, AI generation, captions, publishing setup, and the first 48 hours after posting.
Last month a brand I work with shipped a genuinely great product video with the wrong link in the bio, no pinned comment, a cover frame of the founder mid-blink, and a caption written in ninety seconds flat. The video did fine. It should have done three times fine. None of those misses were creative failures — they were checklist failures, the kind that never happen to accounts that treat publishing as a process instead of an upload.
Pilots with 10,000 hours still run the pre-flight checklist, precisely because competence makes you sloppy about the boring parts. This is the 25-step brand video launch checklist we run on every meaningful release, split into five phases. Steal it, cut what doesn't apply, and stop losing performance to unforced errors.
Phase 1 — Before production (steps 1–5)
- Write the one-sentence job. "This video exists to ___" (fill the retargeting pool, sell the offer, earn follows). Every later decision resolves against this sentence.
- Define the target viewer specifically. Not "women 25–40" — "someone who searched how to fix X this week." Specificity here drives the hook, the tags, and the seed audience.
- Script the hook before the body. First two seconds decided first, and say the target keyword out loud early — spoken audio is indexed for search now.
- Check the trend shelf. Is there a live format or template that carries this concept further than a standalone treatment? Thirty seconds on /templates answers it.
- Confirm rights. Music licensed or AI-generated, any customer footage cleared, disclosure needed if a partner is involved. Fixing this after posting means deleting a performing video.
Phase 2 — Production and QC (steps 6–11)
- Generate or shoot with the platform crop in mind. 9:16 safe zones: nothing critical in the bottom 15% (caption bar) or top 10% (UI). If it is AI-generated, generate at the target aspect ratio rather than cropping later — the AI video generator outputs vertical natively.
- Watch it muted. Most feed viewing is muted. If the video doesn't work silent, fix the captions until it does.
- Watch it sound-only. The inverse test, for shares into DMs and second-screen viewing. Does the audio alone carry the message?
- Burn styled captions. Auto-timed, on-brand preset, checked word-by-word — one transcription error ("their/there," a mangled product name) becomes the top comment. Versely's auto-captions get you 95% there; the last 5% is a human read.
- Check the first frame and the last. First frame = what the thumbnail scroll shows; last frame = what lingers before the loop. No black frames, no mid-blink faces, no dead air at either end.
- Run the AI-artifact pass. For generated footage: hands, text in the background, physics glitches, continuity between cuts. One reviewer, one focused watch, full screen — not a thumbnail glance in a browser tab. The full quality methodology lives in the AI content QA checklist.
Phase 3 — Metadata and packaging (steps 12–17)
- Write the caption as a search query. Keyword-rich first sentence, because caption text is indexed. The reasoning is unpacked in hashtag strategy for brand videos.
- Pick 3–5 tags for this video — category, niche-intent, community. Never paste a saved tag block.
- Select a deliberate cover frame with a 3–5 word title card, consistent with your grid's visual system.
- Draft the pinned comment. The link context, the FAQ answer you know is coming, or the CTA that doesn't fit the caption. Pinned comments are free real estate almost nobody plans.
- Localize if the asset warrants it. Top-performer candidates should have dubs queued for your active markets from day one, not retrofitted in month three.
- Cross-platform variants, not cross-posts. Adjust caption conventions, tag counts, and length per platform. Same asset, native packaging.
Phase 4 — Launch setup (steps 18–21)
- Audit the profile the video points to. Bio current, link matches this campaign, pins arranged — the profile optimization playbook is the 15-minute version of this step. A great video pointing at a stale profile leaks conversions.
- Schedule for the audience's active window, per platform analytics, in the audience's timezone. Versely's social publishing schedules across all nine connected platforms from one place.
- Brief the reply team (or person). Who watches comments in hour one, what the canned answers are, what escalates. Early replies are ranking fuel and tone-setters.
- Pre-stage the paid path. If this video is a funnel candidate, have the ad account structure ready so a proven organic winner can be promoted within 24 hours, not after a week of meetings.
Phase 5 — The first 48 hours (steps 22–25)
- Hour 1: reply to every substantive comment. Question answers become pinned-comment material; early conversation lifts distribution.
- Hours 2–24: watch retention, not views. The graph tells you if the hook or the body failed — knowledge you need for the next video regardless of this one's fate.
- Hour 24: make the amplify/iterate/archive call. Winners get promoted, stitched into replies, and queued for localization; midlings get a lesson extracted; nothing gets deleted in a panic.
- Hour 48: log the result. One row in the content log: hook type, format, tags, retention at 3s/50%, share rate, follows gained. This log is the asset; individual videos are just its data points.
The checklist at a glance
| Phase | Steps | Time cost | Most-skipped step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-production | 1–5 | 30 min | #2 specific viewer |
| Production & QC | 6–11 | 45 min | #8 sound-only pass |
| Metadata & packaging | 12–17 | 30 min | #15 pinned comment |
| Launch setup | 18–21 | 20 min | #18 profile audit |
| First 48 hours | 22–25 | 45 min spread | #25 logging |
Two honest caveats. First, not every post deserves all 25 steps — daily-volume content gets the eight-step express version (3, 6, 7, 9, 12, 13, 14, 22); campaign releases get the full run. Deciding which tier a video belongs to is itself step zero. Second, checklists calcify: review yours quarterly against your content log and delete steps that never changed an outcome.
The counterintuitive part is that AI production makes checklists more valuable, not less. When generation takes minutes instead of days, packaging and distribution become the majority of the work — and the majority of the edge. Teams shipping five videos a week with clean packaging beat teams shipping ten with none.
FAQ
How long does the full 25-step checklist take?
About two and a half hours of focused work spread across the launch window, excluding production itself. The express eight-step version for daily content takes under 30 minutes. Most teams recover the time immediately by killing the untracked rework that sloppy launches generate.
Do I need a launch checklist for every video?
No — tier it. Daily-volume content gets an express pass (hook, captions, mute test, metadata, cover, replies). Campaign videos, launches, and anything with paid spend behind it gets all 25 steps. Deciding the tier before production is effectively the checklist's step zero.
What is the most commonly skipped step?
In my experience, the profile audit (step 18) and the pinned comment (step 15). Both are free, both take minutes, and both directly affect conversion — a video's job is often to generate a profile visit, and an unprepared profile wastes every one of them.
Why check retention instead of views in the first 24 hours?
Views measure distribution, which you only partially control. Retention measures whether the hook and body did their jobs, which you fully control — and it is the input you need to make the next video better. A low-view, high-retention video often just needs re-distribution; the reverse needs a rebuild.
Does AI-generated video need extra checklist steps?
Two: the artifact pass (hands, background text, physics, continuity between generated cuts) and a rights sanity check on the model tier you generated with — commercial use is standard on paid plans but worth confirming per model. Everything else in the checklist applies identically.
