Designing AI video that survives 30 seconds
Meta's long-form counting threshold is reported at 30 seconds and shares outrank likes. A 35-second setup, escalation, resolution and comment-prompt plan.
A six-second loop can rewatch forty times and still be worth nothing in a payout program. Meta's unified Content Monetization Program does not count every play, and it weights shares and comments above likes. Reported counting thresholds sit at around three seconds for a Reel and around thirty seconds for long-form video, which is the tier that actually carries ad breaks. So the exact property most AI clips are engineered for, infinite and seamless with no ending, is the property that parks them in the cheap tier and gives nobody a reason to pass them on.
This is not a quality problem. Plenty of loops look better than the videos that get paid. It is a structure problem, and it has a fix that takes one afternoon: rebuild the loop as a 35-second piece with a beginning, a turn, an ending, and a reason to type something in the comments.
What a payout-qualifying view actually is
The three programs count different things, and none of them count "impressions."

Read the middle column twice, and note that Meta's thresholds are reported rather than published as a single official table. TikTok's floor is a full minute, not thirty seconds. Meta has two floors depending on surface, and the low one is attached to the tier that pays least, so clearing three seconds on a Reel is not the same as earning. Meta's Reels Play bonus was retired on 31 August 2025 in favour of the unified Content Monetization Program, so any playbook that still optimises for bonus-era view milestones is optimising for a program that no longer exists.
A 35-second cut clears the reported long-form threshold with margin and gives you a spine that extends to 65 seconds for TikTok without a rewrite. That is why 35 rather than 31: you want the resolution to land comfortably inside the counted window even when the platform's own player drops the first beat on a slow connection.
Why the loop loses
The loop is a rewatch machine. It optimises for a metric that reads well in analytics and converts badly in a payout formula, because rewatch produces no ending, no comment trigger, and no reason to send it to a specific person.
Shares are the tell. Somebody shares a video because it says something they wanted to say, or because it will get a reaction from one named individual. A loop of a cat drifting through a neon corridor gives a viewer neither. There is a longer treatment of what actually drives rewatches, replies and shares, but the compressed version is: replies come from unfinished arguments, and shares come from finished ones. A loop is neither.
The second cost is policy. YouTube's monetization rules now turn on the inauthentic-content policy, whose disqualifying category is content "made with generic or unoriginal templates giving the impression of mass production." A loop with no narrative is structurally indistinguishable from a template, because there is nothing in it that only you would have made. Adding a resolution is the cheapest available evidence of authorship.
The 35-second plan

Four rules that make the difference between this working and this being a longer loop:
- The setup is the loop's best frame, not the loop. Whatever single image made the original clip good goes at frame 0 and is gone by frame 100. It is your hook, not your video. If you need a refresher on hook construction, the hook-body-CTA formula is the same shape at ad length.
- Escalation must change one variable, not add a second subject. New subjects read as a new video. The same subject in worse trouble reads as a story.
- The resolution has to be visible without sound. Most 30-second views happen muted. If your payoff is a punchline in the voiceover, your payoff does not exist.
- The comment prompt is a question you already know people will get wrong. "Which one was real?" gives a viewer something to be wrong about. "What do you think?" has no wrong answer, and therefore nothing to defend.
Converting an existing loop, step by step
Pick one loop that performed on views and earned nothing. Then:
- Write down what the loop implies but never shows. Every good loop has an off-screen fact — where the thing came from, what happens next, who is watching. That fact is your resolution.
- Cut the loop to its best 4 seconds. That is beat one. Everything else in the original file is now B-roll.
- Generate two escalation shots that keep the subject and change the pressure. Same lighting, same lens language, same colour.
- Generate the resolution. This is the shot you never made, and it is the whole reason the rebuild is worth doing.
- Write the comment prompt as burned text, not as a caption. Captions get cropped by platform UI; burned text at the safe centre does not.

"Build a five-scene vertical video, 9:16, 35 seconds total, from this beat sheet. Scene 1 is 4 seconds and I'll supply the clip. Scenes 2 and 3 are 5 seconds each: same subject as scene 1, same warm sodium-vapour lighting, the situation escalating. Scene 4 is 14 seconds and resolves it. Scene 5 is 7 seconds and holds on the comment prompt. Match colour across all five and give me a preview before any final render."
Those durations sum to the 35 seconds the beat table specifies, which is worth checking by hand every time you write one of these, because a scene list that quietly adds up to 28 seconds produces a video that never reaches the threshold you built it for. Measure the three numbers that matter
Views are now the least useful number on the page. Track these instead:
- Percentage of views crossing 30 seconds. This is the number that decides whether a long-form play is counted at all. Measure your own baseline over the first fortnight and judge every change against that rather than against a figure from a blog, including this one. - Shares divided by likes. Rising means the resolution is doing work. Flat means people enjoyed it and had no reason to pass it on.
- Comments per thousand views. This is a direct read on beat four. If it does not move when you change the question, the question has no wrong answer.

Does a 35-second video qualify for TikTok Creator Rewards?
No. TikTok requires video longer than one minute, along with 10,000 followers, 100,000 views in the prior 30 days, an 18+ personal account and an eligible country. The 35-second structure is the spine you extend: add a second escalation beat and a longer resolution to clear 65 seconds, and the same beat order still holds.
Will adding narrative actually change how the algorithm treats the video?
The honest answer is that nobody outside the platforms can prove causation, and neither Meta nor TikTok publishes RPM figures or ranking weights. What is reported is the counting behaviour: Meta's program does not count every play, the thresholds are described as around three seconds for a Reel and around thirty seconds for long-form, and shares and comments are weighted above likes. Designing for a counting rule is different from guessing at a ranking model, and it is the part you can control.
Do I have to remake the whole loop, or can I extend it?
Extend it. The loop's strongest four seconds become the setup, and the rest of the original file becomes B-roll you can cut back to during escalation. Regenerating from scratch throws away the one asset that already has a proven hook.
Does the AI disclosure hurt reach on a piece like this?
Toggling YouTube's altered-or-synthetic-content disclosure does not by itself cost monetization or reach. Meta requires AI content to be original to the creator and labeled. What costs you monetization is the template shape, not the label, which is exactly what a resolution beat fixes.
