Flux Kontext is an edit, not T2I
Flux Kontext is a 4-credit 4K edit-image row. It requires a still. Flux 2 Max is the T2I cousin. Do not open Kontext blank.
Flux Kontext is a 4-credit 4K edit-image row. It requires a still. Flux 2 Max is the T2I cousin. Do not open Kontext blank. Flux Kontext is Flux, content type image, category edit-image, 4 credits, discounted, 4K max output, requires an image, max reference 1. The catalog line: context-aware generation with coherent compositions. Features: Context-aware, Coherent, Smart. Styles listed: Realistic, Artistic, Anime. Aspects: 1:1, 9:16, 16:9, 2:3, 3:2, 3:4, 4:3. Empty duration list. Audio empty. This page is the door. It is not Flux 2 Max is a stills row. That post is the generate-not-video error. This one is the edit-not-generate error on the same family.
Kontext will not invent the first plate. Upload the locked still. Write the change. A blank-page Flux still is Max (7 credits, T2I), Flex, Pro, Schnell, or another generate slug.
Kontext requires a file
Fields, not the word generation in the description.
- ctype: image
- cats: edit-image only — not text-to-image, not image-to-image as a second listed category
- credits: 4
- requires_image: true
- max_reference: 1
- max output: 4K
- durs: empty
"Context-aware generation" on the card means generation in the context of the supplied still, not a T2I prompt with good taste. The context is the file. One reference max: the source. Extra mood images are not the product. If you needed six refs, that is Qwen 2511. If you needed fourteen, Banana 2.
Requires an image is the gate. If the launcher lets you submit without a file, you are not on flux-kontext. If it demands a file and offers no seconds, you are.
Match aspect to the source. Asking Kontext to become a 9:16 poster it was not given is a crop wearing an edit prompt. 9:16 is on the list for when the source is already tall.
4K on an edit is easy to misuse. A 4K retouch is still a still. Use the listing when the plate might be printed or sent to I2V. Do not treat 4K as "almost Flux 3 video." Flux 3 Text to Video is a different slug (9 credits, 5–20s, native audio). Kontext is 4 credits of pixels.
4K edit at 4 credits
Pick Kontext when:
- The still is already a Flux-looking plate, or you want Flux coherence on a supplied frame.
- One object is wrong and the rest must hold: lighting, identity, layout.
- You want a 4K listing at 4 credits for that change.
- You can write a pointed instruction, not a new scene.
Skip Kontext when:
- You have no file. Flux 2 Max is the photoreal T2I at 7 credits. Flux 1.1 Pro is 4 credits T2I and 4K if you wanted a cheaper Flux generate.
- The job is bulk speckle removal. Pruna is 1 credit and 4K.
- The job is in-image type as the test. Qwen Image Edit is 3 credits and 4K with a listed type strength.
- The job is a long numbered brief. LongCat is 15 credits for long-context stills edits.
- The job is motion. Flux 3 video or another I2V slug, after the still is locked.
The instruction still needs a where, a verb, and a keep list. "Make it more coherent" is how Kontext restyles the label you already legalled. "Replace the jacket with matte navy. Keep the face, the wall, and the crop" is an edit. Coherent compositions is the reason to stay on Flux for the change instead of bouncing to a cheaper editor that restyles the light.
Versus Flex: Flex is a 5-credit flexible still/edit cousin on the Flux 2 line. This page is Kontext. Do not name-swap them in a brief. Confirm flux-kontext.
Max is the blank-page cousin
Max is T2I, 7 credits, photoreal, no 4K badge on that card, no image required. Kontext is edit-image, 4 credits, 4K listed, image required. A week that uses both:
- Generate on Max (or another T2I) until you would print the plate.
- If one object is wrong, Kontext at 4 credits, 4K, same Flux coherence bet.
- If the whole plate is wrong, another generate. Do not Kontext a sketch and call it locked.
Opening Kontext first because "Flux is the good one" is how you stall with no source. Opening Max to "tweak" a locked still is how you get a new identity with similar chrome.
Flux Schnell, Klein, Flash, 1.1 Pro are other stills SKUs. None of them are Flux 3 video because the family name moved. Kontext is still not T2I. The family is large. The category on the card is small.
The generate door is text to image. The edit door is Kontext with a file. Keep them straight in the ticket: "Max generate" or "Kontext edit." "Flux it" is the expensive way to pick at random.
Edit, then motion
After you would print the Kontext still:
- If the deliverable is a PNG, stop.
- If frame one must move, image-to-video. Hailuo 2.3 Fast is 6s / 10s at 28 credits. Omni Video is 4–10s at 9 credits. Flux 3 first-last is 9 credits when two stills are endpoints. Veo 3.1 is 40 credits, 4 / 6 / 8 seconds, native audio, when the shot is Veo.
- If you needed first-last on Flux, that is the Flux 3 first-last video slug, not Kontext interpolating two stills as an editor.
Captions on the clip. Add captions to video. Article 50 can apply to a realistic still of a real person. Read Article 50. A 4K edit does not exempt it.
A Friday test: did someone type a duration into Kontext? They wanted Flux 3. Did someone skip the upload? They wanted Max. Did someone pay 4 credits to delete a cup they could have deleted on Pruna for 1? They overpaid. Did someone keep the face, the light, and the crop while changing a jacket? They used the row.
Confirm flux-kontext with a source file, then sign up when the job is a 4-credit 4K Flux edit. Kontext stays edit-image. It does not become T2I because the description says generation.
FAQ
Can I use Flux Kontext without uploading an image?
No. requires_image is true. Category is edit-image. Blank-page Flux stills are a T2I slug such as Flux 2 Max.
Is Kontext the Flux video editor?
No. Empty duration list. Flux 3 video rows are separate slugs with seconds and native audio. Kontext returns a 4K still.
Why is it 4 credits when Max is 7?
Different doors. Max is a 7-credit photoreal generate. Kontext is a 4-credit 4K edit of a supplied still. Cheaper is not weaker; it is the change, not the first plate.
