Colorize a still, then animate it

Colorize the still first. Then animate it. Topaz Image Colorization is 7 credits, edit-image / image-to-image, image required: AI-powered colorization of black-and-white images with natural, realistic color restoration. Colorize an old photo is the task door (colorize_photo, saturation control). Image-to-video after that is a second row. A video model will not “add period color” as a reliable first pass on a grayscale archive. You will get motion on gray, or invented color you cannot edit.

This page is the two-step order. It is not a history of film tints.

Colorize is a still job

The catalog card: Topaz Labs, content type image, categories edit-image and image-to-image, image required, 7 credits, no max resolution listed. The tool path takes a grayscale, black-and-white, or faded image_url. saturation lets you dial toward a muted, period-looking print or a more vivid modern look. output_format sets the file type.

Colors are inferred. They are not historically verified. Treat the result as a plausible interpretation, not a factual record of the original paint, wardrobe, or signage. If a museum or a legal caption needs the true color of a 1952 label, you need a researcher, not 8 credits.

Procedure on the still:

1. Scan or export the archive at the highest resolution you have. A soft thumbnail will colorize as a soft thumbnail. Topaz Upscale Image is a different 7-credit row if the problem is size; do not colorize a postage stamp and hope I2V invents grain that is really type.
2. Run colorize. Start saturation moderate. Oversaturated “modern” on a 1940s shop floor reads as a filter, not a restoration.
3. Review skin, product, and any type you will later need to read. If the label is the brief, approve the still as a pack shot before you animate. A melted carton in color is still a melted carton in video.
4. Save the color still as the plate. Do not keep the grayscale as “the real file” and the color as a preview you will forget to attach.

What this pass will not do:

• Colorize a video. colorize_photo is built for stills. Frame-by-frame color on an existing clip is not this SKU.
• Invent a second person, a new shop, or a camera move. That is generate or I2V, after.
• Restore missing corners. Crop and damage stay. Repair is a different still job if you have one.

Batch the stills you will actually animate. Colorizing a hundred scans you will never move is 7 credits each of archive, which is a valid job, but it is not this page. This page is the still you will hand to I2V.

I2V is a second row, on the color plate

Attach the color still to an image-to-video card. The video row follows the pixels you give it. A grayscale plate plus “in color, gentle push-in” is a fight with a model that was asked to invent a grade and a move at once. You will not get a still you can re-grade.

A published I2V example on this catalog: Seedance Image to Video is 9 credits, 1080p, 2–12s in one-second steps, audio null, image required. Wan 2.7 Image to Video is 15 credits, 1080p, 2–15s, audio null. Pick the row the duration and ceiling need. Do not invent native audio on these cards; audio is unset. Score later.

Prompt motion, not a re-description of the photograph.

• “Slow push-in, locked product, dust in the light.”
• “Gentle parallax, label holds, no new objects.”

Do not write:

• “A bustling 1930s street in full color as the camera flies.”

That sentence is text-to-video with a mood. It will recast the archive. If the still is the contract, I2V must keep being that still.

Aspect: crop the color still to the ratio you will ship before you attach it. A 16:9 scan animated as 16:9 will not become a 9:16 Reel because the caption said TikTok. Recrop the still, then generate.

Duration: pick a hold you can live with. A 12-second drift on a portrait that only needed a 3-second breath is a long look at inferred color. Shorter is cheaper on duration-priced rows; Seedance I2V lists 2–12s. Confirm with estimate_cost.

Audio is null on the I2V cards above. Add music to video after picture lock if the cut needs a bed. Do not write “with a period jazz score” into the I2V prompt and expect a stem.

If you needed a slideshow of many colorized stills rather than a camera move on one, that is a different job: sequence the stills, then convert. Do not I2V eight archives and call it a board.

Order is the whole savings

Wrong order, and what you pay for:

1. I2V on grayscale, then colorize. Colorize is a photo tool. You now have a moving gray file and no still job that will paint it. You generate again.
2. T2V “old photo comes to life in color.” You get a new scene that looks like a movie about an old photo. You do not get the scan. The archive was the asset.
3. Colorize, then T2V without attaching the still. The color file sits in the folder. The generate invents a cousin. Attach the JPEG.
4. Colorize at vivid saturation, then I2V a pack shot. The video will faithfully animate a cartoon grade. Dial saturation on the still; do not fight it in the video prompt.

Right order:

1. Colorize (7 credits on Topaz Image Colorization).
2. Approve the still — skin, SKU, type.
3. Crop to the ship ratio.
4. I2V on that file.
5. Mix, caption, disclose if the result is photoreal / meaningfully altered. YouTube’s Shorts overlay for photoreal AI, announced 27 May 2026 on the YouTube Blog, sits on the video. EU Article 50 from 2 August 2026 is the deployer label at first exposure. Inferred color on an archive still presented as “this is what it looked like” is a caption problem, not a model problem.

The AI image to video door is the second step. The first step is the still tool. Mixing launchers is how the brief loses the scan.

Lock the still you would hang

If you would not print the color still, do not animate it. I2V will not rescue a bad grade. It will add motion to the mistake.

If the job is a memorial or a brand-history reel, colorize the two or three frames that will actually move. Hold the rest as stills in a slideshow. A wall of 8-credit colorizations you I2V at 9 credits each is a bill, not a film.

No. They are inferred by the model. Treat the result as a plausible interpretation. If a caption claims original color, you need a source other than this row.

Can I colorize the video after I animate the grayscale?

Not with colorize_photo. That tool is a still job. Colorize first, then I2V. A video colorizer is not this SKU.
