AI profile label is not a post label
Instagram’s AI-generated profile badge is account-level. Per-Reel AI info is a different switch. Photoreal files can still need both.
Instagram’s AI-generated profile badge is an account setting. Per-Reel AI info / Made with AI is a media setting. You may need both. The profile pill tells a viewer the person the account features is AI. The post label tells a viewer this file was generated or meaningfully altered. One does not file the other.
This page is the two-switch problem after Instagram’s 31 August 2026 rename. TechCrunch and Instagram’s creator post that day are the profile instrument. Meta’s organic AI-info path — C2PA, IPTC, and self-disclosure — is the file instrument. Do not treat the bio badge as a caption for every Reel.
The account switch
On 31 August 2026 Instagram renamed “AI creator” to “AI-generated profile.” The intended use, in Instagram’s words, is profiles whose content features an AI-generated person rather than a human. Creators apply it by editing the profile and toggling AI-generated profile. Instagram says the label then appears on the profile and alongside content if that specific media does not already have a label indicating it was created or edited with AI.
That last clause is the stacking rule. The profile badge is a default. A more specific media label can take the slot on a given post. The May 2026 test already behaved this way: when a piece carried automated “AI info” and the account carried the older “AI creator” badge, the post showed AI info instead of the profile badge. Instagram still treats the two as different questions. The rename did not merge them.
The account switch is also where the reach policy lives. Unlabeled AI people can be demoted in recommendations. Labelled profiles are not penalized merely for featuring an AI person. That penalty is not a property of a single Reel’s metadata. It is a property of the profile’s identity claim. A scheduler that posts the MP4 cannot flip it. Someone with access to the Instagram account has to.
If the bio photo, the grid, and the talking close-ups are a generated person, this is the switch. If they are a human, leave it off. AI UGC as a production method is not the same fact as “the account is a synthetic person.” Mixing those two is how a founder account gets badged as fake, or a persona account ships unlabeled.
The post switch
The file-level instrument is older and wider. Meta applies “AI info” / “Made with AI” on organic posts from:
- C2PA / Content Credentials that survive to upload
- IPTC digital-source fields on stills
- Self-disclosure in advanced settings
- Meta’s own generators, and classifiers when it chooses to run them
How Meta decides to show an AI Info label is the ingest page. This page only needs the operational split: that label is about the media, not about whether the account’s featured person is human.
A human-on-camera shop that generates a photoreal extra, a product orbit, or a talking presenter who was never filmed still owes a file-level disclosure on those posts. The profile is not AI-generated. The Reel might be. Instagram’s 31 August carve-out — captions, photo edits, graphics, creative tweaks do not require the profile badge — does not say those files are unlabeled at the post level. It says they do not make the account an AI person.
Photoreal generated people, places, or events that an EU viewer would take as authentic still need a perceivable deployer label at first exposure under Article 50 (in force 2 August 2026). Instagram’s AI info toggle is a platform control. It is not automatically a legal first-exposure mark. Burn a line a person can read, or put the disclosure template on screen, when the picture would pass as real.
Self-disclosure is the path you control when the manifest dies. Social ingest re-encodes. A scheduler hop can strip Content Credentials. Do not assume the cooperative signal arrived. Flip the post toggle. Keep the original export in the archive.
When you need both
You need both when the account is an AI-generated person and the individual posts are generated or meaningfully AI-altered media. That is the default for a persona account. The profile badge covers identity. The post path covers the file, the Ads Manager path if you boost it, and the legal label if the clip is a deepfake-like depiction.
You need only the profile badge when the identity is synthetic but a given post is not the kind of media Instagram would AI-info — a clearly graphic card, a text Story, a link sticker. Instagram says the profile label shows alongside content that does not already have a media label. Do not skip the profile toggle because this week’s carousel was type-on-color.
You need only the post label when the identity is human and a given file is photoreal generated or meaningfully altered. Founder on camera, AI extra in the B-roll: post, not profile. Filmed SKU, generated lifestyle plate behind it: post, not profile. Burned-in captions on a real voice: neither, unless some other rule in your market says otherwise. Instagram’s own list puts captions outside the profile badge.
You need neither for ordinary assistive work on a human account: colour, crop, graphics, caption polish. YouTube’s 27 May 2026 labelling post draws a similar line for its own product — beauty filters, colour, AI scripts, obvious animation are not the photoreal disclosure case. Instagram’s profile rule is even narrower: it is about the person featured.
The failure mode is using one switch as a proxy for the other. A persona account with the badge off and AI info on every Reel is still an unlabeled AI person for the 31 August reach policy. A human account with the profile badge on because “we use AI” overstates the identity and trains viewers to distrust filmed posts. Match the switch to the fact.
What a mixed account actually does
Most brand accounts are mixed. That is allowed. It is also why two switches exist.
Run the identity decision once. Write it down: “this Instagram is the founder” or “this Instagram is the mascot.” If you need both, use two accounts. The mascot account takes the AI-generated profile badge. The founder account does not. Cross-posting the same 9:16 file does not merge the identities. Facebook Reels on the same Meta family still sees the file; the Facebook Page’s identity is a separate object.
Then run the file decision per post. Photoreal generated person, place, or event: post-level AI info, plus a perceivable line if Article 50 applies. Assistive captions and graphics: no profile badge, no need to treat the Reel as a synthetic person. If you schedule from a third-party tool, confirm that tool exposes the organic AI toggle. If it does not, the post is not disclosed just because the profile is badged — and the profile is not disclosed just because the tool posted a caption that says “made with AI.”
Generate on the row the job needs. Seedance 2.5 is the 4–30 second, 720p, 47-credit native-audio hold in the catalog. The AI video generator is the door. Instagram’s composer is not a studio, and neither toggle is a generate parameter. If you want the file, the captions, and a checklist before the upload, sign up and keep Instagram’s two switches as Instagram’s two switches.
FAQ
If the profile is badged, do I skip AI info on each Reel?
No. Instagram’s own 31 August 2026 note says the profile label appears alongside content if that media does not already have a media-level AI label. Photoreal files can still carry AI info. Ads, Article 50, and other platforms are separate again.
Can a scheduling tool set the AI-generated profile badge?
No. It is a profile setting inside Instagram. Publishing the MP4 is a different action. The account-level disclosure stays in Instagram’s settings regardless of which tool posted.
Does a human founder who uses Veo need the profile badge?
No. Instagram carved out edits, captions, graphics, and creative tweaks. Veo on a product plate does not make the founder an AI-generated person. Label the file when the picture is photoreal synthetic; leave the profile as a human profile.
