    Text to Vector: When You Need an SVG, Not a Raster

    Four models generate true editable SVGs from a prompt, not PNGs. When a deliverable needs real vector paths, and how to prompt those models well.

    Ask almost any image model for "a clean vector logo" and it will happily oblige — with a PNG. A good-looking PNG, rendered at whatever resolution you asked for, that stops being useful the instant someone tries to open it in Illustrator, blow it up to billboard size, or hand it to a screen printer who needs actual paths. The overwhelming majority of image models, including the best ones, only ever output pixels. "Vector" has mostly been a prompt word, not a real output format.

    A small set of models changes that: they generate actual SVG files, with real editable paths, directly from a prompt. Versely carries four of them, and we've never written a word about what they're for — or, just as usefully, what they're not for.

    Raster and vector are different kinds of file, not different quality tiers

    A raster image is a fixed grid of pixels. Scale it up past its native resolution and it softens or blocks up, because there's no more information to draw on. A vector image is a set of mathematical paths and fill regions — shapes, not pixels — so it scales to any size with no loss, and a designer can select an individual shape and recolor, resize, or reshape it without touching anything else.

    For a large share of what gets generated, that distinction doesn't matter. A social post, a blog header, a photoreal product shot, an ad frame — all of these get viewed at one size, on a screen, and a raster model is the right, cheaper, more capable tool for the job (photorealism, lighting, texture, and gradient are things raster does that vector fundamentally can't). The distinction starts mattering the moment the deliverable's file format gets scrutinized downstream, not just its appearance: a logo going to a screen printer or a laser cutter, an icon set a developer needs at arbitrary sizes, a trademark filing that wants clean path data, a mark a designer needs to recolor for twenty different sub-brands without asking you to regenerate it.

    The four models that actually output SVG

    Recraft's own documentation is direct about the distinction, describing its V4 Vector line as "the only model capable of generating editable, production-quality SVG graphics", because unlike a raster model returning a fixed grid of pixels, vector output "preserve[s] scalable geometry and discrete color regions suitable for professional design workflows."

    Versely's catalog carries all four current versions, sitting in the model catalog alongside the raster generators: recraft-4-text-to-vector and recraft-4-1-text-to-vector at the standard tier, plus recraft-4-pro-text-to-vector and recraft-4-1-pro-text-to-vector at the Pro tier for crisper paths and better prompt adherence. The standard models run 8 credits a generation; Pro runs 30. That's a real decision point, not just a quality slider — more on it below.

    Recraft's own V4 launch post is explicit about why this replaces a manual step a lot of designers currently do by hand: the output is "actual SVG files with structured layers and clean geometry, ready to export for web or print or open in any other professional design tool for further editing," with "no tracing, cleanup, or conversion steps required." That's the entire pitch, and it's a real one — skip the redraw.

    Generating a vector is a different job from converting one

    It's worth being precise about a second capability that sounds similar but isn't: Recraft also sells a raster-to-SVG converter — you hand it an existing bitmap (a photo, a scanned logo, someone else's flat PNG export) and it traces that image into vector paths, no text prompt involved, documented as part of Recraft's own API. That's a genuinely different job — you already have the image and need it in a different format — from the four text-to-vector generation models above, which start from a written brief and nothing else. Versely's catalog carries the four prompt-based generation models; the standalone raster-to-SVG conversion tool is not one we carry today. Worth knowing before you go looking for it, if what's actually sitting in front of you is a messy existing bitmap rather than a blank page.

    What a vector model actually wants from your prompt

    Vector generation rewards simplicity in a way raster generation doesn't. Flat color regions, a limited palette, clean silhouettes, and geometric or illustrative subjects — logos, icons, badges, mascots, repeating patterns — are exactly what the model is built to turn into honest paths. It fights you on anything that's inherently a raster idea: photorealistic skin and lighting, fine photographic grain, soft painterly gradient blending. A vector path can describe a hard edge between two colors; it can't describe a true photographic soft-focus blur, and a model that tries usually fakes it with hundreds of tiny shapes standing in for a gradient — technically an SVG, practically not editable by anyone.

    Two prompt habits fix most of that:

    • Name the style directly. "Flat vector icon," "two-color line badge," "minimal geometric mascot," "single-color line art" all tell the model what kind of geometry to reach for, rather than leaving it to guess from a generic subject description.
    • Constrain the palette explicitly. "Two colors: navy and white" or "single-color line work on transparent background" keeps the shape count sane and the file genuinely editable, instead of a technically-vector file that's actually a gradient traced into a few thousand slivers.

    A Versely walkthrough

    For a logo brief that has to leave the building as an SVG, the sequence looks like this in Versely's agent chat:

    Prompt: "Generate a flat vector logo of a fox head for an outdoor gear brand — two colors only, navy and burnt orange, no gradients, no photographic detail. Use Recraft V4.1 Vector."

    Because the model produces SVG, not PNG, the result opens directly in Illustrator, Figma, or Canva with real, selectable paths — no import-and-trace step in between. Run the cheap exploration pass on the standard tier while you're still finding the concept, then re-run the winning prompt on recraft-4-1-pro-text-to-vector once the direction is locked. The credit gap between standard and Pro (8 versus 30) is worth paying once, on the final version, rather than on every exploratory variant.

    When raster is still the right call

    Most generation work doesn't need any of this. If the output will be viewed at one fixed size and never handed off as an editable file — a social post, a hero image, a photoreal product shot, an ad frame — a raster model remains the right default, and the current best AI image generator ranking or Versely's text-to-image tool is where that work belongs. Vector earns its place specifically when someone downstream expects to open the file and select individual shapes: a print vendor, a merch or laser-cut supplier, a trademark application, a designer recoloring the mark for a dozen sub-brands without looping you back in.

    If you're not sure which bucket a job falls into, ask one question: will someone open this file and expect to edit individual shapes in it? If yes, generate vector from the start — regenerating a raster logo as vector later just re-introduces the tracing step the format was supposed to remove. If no, raster is cheaper, more capable, and the right tool. And once a mark is locked, pair it with type from Versely's font library — a vector logo without matched typography is half a brand kit.
