Your files never leave your device
This is not a promise about how carefully we handle your upload. There is no upload. The file you choose is read into memory by your own browser, processed there, and handed back as a download — the tool has no server component and makes no network request with your data.
- Nothing is stored. We never receive the file, so there is no copy to retain, no retention period to disclose, and nothing to delete on request.
- Nothing is transmitted. No upload endpoint, no analytics payload carrying file contents, no third-party processor.
- You can verify it. Load this page, disconnect from the internet, and use the tool. It still works, because everything it needs is already on your machine.
- Nothing persists after you close the tab. Files are held in page memory only — not in local storage, not in a cache, not in a database.
A note on wording, because it matters: we do not describe these tools as “encrypted.” Encryption protects data that travels to somebody else's computer. Your file does not travel, so there is nothing to encrypt and nothing to intercept — which is a stronger guarantee than encryption, not a weaker one. The page itself is served over HTTPS like the rest of the site.
This makes the tools safe for material you are contractually barred from uploading to third-party services — client footage under NDA, unreleased campaign assets, anything covered by a confidentiality clause.
How it works
1. Drop the file
MP4, MOV, WebM, MP3, WAV or M4A, up to 10 minutes. It stays in this tab; nothing is uploaded to Versely.
2. Generate captions
Whisper tiny transcribes the speech and times each line on your device, using WebGPU when your browser has it and WebAssembly otherwise. The first run downloads the model once into your browser cache.
3. Fix the lines
Each line is an editable box. Correct product names, people and numbers; the downloads use your edits.
4. Download SRT or VTT
SRT for YouTube, Premiere, DaVinci and CapCut; VTT for the web. Or take the SRT to the free burn-captions tool to hard-code it into the video.
Questions
Is this subtitle generator really free?
Yes, with no account, no watermark and no per-minute charge. The speech model runs on your own device, so there is no server cost to pass on. The only limit is 10 minutes per file, because a browser tab has to hold the decoded audio in memory.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read inside this browser tab and the audio is transcribed there. The one network request is the first-run download of the open speech model from Hugging Face, which your browser then caches.
How accurate are the subtitles?
Good on clear speech in a quiet room, weaker on music beds, heavy accents, crosstalk and unusual names. The model is the small Whisper tiny, chosen so it runs in a browser. That is why every line is editable before you download.
Which languages does it support?
Whisper tiny is multilingual and detects the spoken language itself. English is the strongest; other languages work, with more corrections needed on quieter or faster speech.
SRT or VTT - which do I need?
SRT for YouTube uploads and most editors (Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut via import, CapCut). VTT for HTML5 video players on the web. Both carry the same lines and timings.
Can it put the subtitles onto the video?
Not on this page - it makes the subtitle file. Take the SRT to the free burn-captions tool to hard-code it into the picture on your device, or use Versely's caption styles for animated, branded captions.
