Resolution is set before generation on almost every video row. A native 4K pass samples the scene at that pixel count. An upscale pass takes a smaller generate and invents the missing pixels. Both can be labelled 4K at export. They are not the same picture. Fine type, product edges, and physics tells (contact, cloth, hair) are where you see the difference. Upscaling a soft 720p talking head will not letter a label that was never in the training sample at that size.
Kling's 3.0 family is the current catalog example that actually offers a native 4K tier (kling-video-v3-4k-text-to-video). Other rows offer 4K as an upscale or as a quality name that does not map to 3840×2160. Read the model's own list. Social platforms re-encode everything you upload, so a native 4K vertical clip watched on a phone is often discarded back toward 1080p. The extra pixels still matter for a master you will crop, for a large display, and for any frame you will pull as a still.
Cost tracks pixel count. Draft at the model's comfortable size, finish at the target, upscale only when the composition is locked. A native 4K generate of a shot you will throw away is the expensive way to learn the prompt. Native audio, physics, and temporal consistency are independent of this setting; a 4K clip can still flicker, float, or be silent.
In practice
- Check whether the row is a 4K generate or an upscale. The export filename will not tell you.
- Draft smaller. Finish at 4K only on the take you are keeping.
- Do not shoot native 4K to survive a social re-encode. It will not. Shoot it for the master.
The mistake to avoid
Buying 4K to fix a soft face. If the face was invented at 720p, 4K is a larger soft face.
Where you will run into it

Related terms
Resolution
Resolution is how many pixels an output contains, usually named by its height — 720p, 1080p, 4K — and set before generation rather than after.
Upscaling
Upscaling raises the resolution of media you already have, inventing plausible detail rather than recovering detail that was never recorded.
Temporal consistency
Temporal consistency is how well a generated clip keeps things the same from one frame to the next, with no flicker, shimmer or drifting detail.
Physics consistency
Physics consistency is whether generated motion obeys plausible weight, contact and inertia — a glass that falls, a cloth that hangs, a body that has mass.
Character consistency
Character consistency meaning: whether the same person, mascot, or product still looks like itself across separate generations.
