Generation controls

    Resolution

Also called Output size, Quality setting.

Resolution is how many pixels an output contains, usually named by its height — 720p, 1080p, 4K — and set before generation rather than after.

Pixel count grows with the square of the label. Going from 720p to 1080p is not fifty per cent more picture, it is more than double, and 4K against 1080p is four times. Generation time and cost track that curve, which is why the highest setting is rarely the right default for a draft.

Higher is not automatically better-looking either. Models have a native size they were trained around, and pushing far past it can produce a large image with soft or repeating detail rather than a genuinely more detailed one. The reliable route to a big, sharp file is often to generate at the model's comfortable size and upscale.

The vocabulary is inconsistent across providers — some publish exact heights, some publish 1K/2K/4K tiers, some publish HD and SD. They do not map onto each other cleanly, so read the model's own list rather than assuming.

    In practice

    • Draft at a low setting, finish at the target — most iterations are thrown away.
    • Social platforms re-encode everything you upload, so mastering above 1080p rarely survives to the viewer.
    • Upscaling after the fact is a separate pass and often cheaper than generating large.

    The mistake to avoid

Choosing 4K for a vertical clip that will be watched on a phone at 1080p or less. The extra pixels are discarded at upload.
