Almost every video model has a short ceiling, and the reason is structural: the model has to hold the whole sequence in mind at once to keep it coherent, and that requirement grows with length. So the options are a menu, not a slider — a model offers a handful of lengths and refuses the rest.
Length also changes what a prompt should contain. A short clip is one beat: one action, one camera behaviour. Ask for a three-part narrative in a few seconds and the model compresses it into something that reads as a jump cut or, more often, into a single muddled action.
For anything longer than the ceiling, the answers are extension — continuing from the last frame — or assembly, generating several shots and cutting them together. Assembly is usually the better-looking route because a cut hides discontinuity that an extension has to survive.
In practice
- Fixed options are common; a model advertising 5s and 10s will not give you 7s.
- One clip, one beat. Multi-beat ideas want multiple generations.
- Duration is the main driver of what a video job costs in credits on most models.
