On Instagram, AI-generated profile is a label for an account whose featured person is AI-generated rather than human. The account owner switches it on by editing their profile, and Instagram shows it on the profile and next to the account's content wherever a post carries no AI label of its own (Instagram for Creators, 31 August 2026: creators.instagram.com/blog/ai-generated-profile-label).
The owner sets it. Instagram tells creators to apply the label by editing their profile and toggling on AI-generated profile. Instagram's own systems come in on the other side: it says it detects profiles that feature an AI-generated person without the label, notifies them, and lets them check Account Status to see whether they are no longer eligible to appear in recommendations. A creator who adds the label proactively, Instagram says, will not see a change to their profile's reach.
It is not the label you see on a post. 'AI info', the name that replaced 'Made with AI' in July 2024, marks a single post, story, reel or thread when Meta's systems read an industry-standard AI signal in the file or when the person posting says the content is AI-generated (Meta Help Centre, 'How to identify AI content on Meta products', meta.com/help/artificial-intelligence/1783222608822690). The profile label marks who the account is about, not how one file was made, and Instagram shows it beside a post only when that post has no label of its own saying it was created or edited with AI.
For a viewer, the label answers one question: is the person on this profile a human? Instagram's stated reason for the change is that people do not like finding out later that a profile that seemed human features an AI-generated person. It is a statement about the person on the profile, not a verdict on any single post, and it does not mean the account merely uses AI tools. Instagram says creators who simply use AI tools as part of their creative process do not need to add it.
In practice
- Turn it on when the person your account features is AI-generated: edit your profile and toggle on AI-generated profile.
- Using AI tools as part of your creative process is not the trigger. The label is for a profile whose featured person is AI-generated.
- Had the older 'AI creator' label? Review it under the new name. Instagram says you can confirm it still fits or remove it if it no longer applies.
- If reach on an AI persona drops, open Account Status before rewriting the creative. That is where Instagram says unlabelled profiles it detects are notified, and where a decision made in error is appealed.
- The profile label does not replace ad and sponsorship disclosure. If the account promotes products, see FTC endorsement disclosure and photoreal disclosure.
AI-generated profile: common questions
What does AI-generated profile mean on Instagram?
It means the person an account features is AI-generated, not a human. Instagram renamed its 'AI creator' label to 'AI-generated profile' on 31 August 2026 to make that clearer. It is set on the profile, so it describes the account rather than a single post or Reel.
What is an AI-generated profile?
An Instagram profile that features an AI-generated person instead of a human, with the label switched on so viewers know. It is not simply a profile that uses AI tools: Instagram says creators who use AI tools as part of their creative process do not need to add the label.
Where does the AI-generated profile label appear?
On the profile itself and, according to Instagram, alongside the account's content when a specific post does not already have a label saying it was created or edited with AI.
Who adds the AI-generated profile label?
The account owner. Instagram says creators apply it by editing their profile and toggling on AI-generated profile. If Instagram detects a profile that features an AI-generated person without the label, it notifies the account, and the owner can check Account Status to see whether the profile is no longer eligible to appear in recommendations.
Is it the same as the AI info or Made with AI label?
No. AI info, the name that replaced Made with AI in July 2024, is a label on a single post, story, reel or thread. The AI-generated profile label is set on the account. How Meta decides to show an AI label covers the post-level label in detail.
Can you remove or change the AI-generated profile label?
Yes, if it no longer applies. Instagram says creators who had the older AI creator label can review the new one, confirm it still fits, or remove it. A profile that was made ineligible for recommendations can appeal the decision in Account Status if the owner thinks it was a mistake.
Does the AI-generated profile label reduce reach?
Not by itself. Instagram says creators who proactively add the label will not see a change to their profile's reach. Profiles that feature an AI-generated person without it may see limits to their reach and can become ineligible to appear in recommendations.
The mistake to avoid
Reading 'AI-generated profile' as 'this account used AI.' The trigger is a generated person as the profile, not a generate somewhere in the pipeline.
