An engaged view is YouTube's term for a view where the viewer clicked to watch or kept watching past the initial seconds (YouTube blog, 19 August 2026: blog.youtube/inside-youtube/engaged-views-youtube-explained). It is the old definition of a view under a new name. Since 24 August 2026 the public view count is a separate number, counted the moment a video starts to play on every format (YouTube Help: support.google.com/youtube/answer/2991785).
YouTube's own examples show where the two numbers split. Hover over a thumbnail so the video autoplays and that is a view from the first frame; keep watching and it becomes an engaged view. Click or tap a thumbnail and start watching and it counts as both. On Shorts, a view registers the moment the Short starts, and it becomes an engaged view if it keeps playing for some number of seconds. YouTube's posts say 'the initial seconds' and do not give that number.
Engaged views stay the base for most reporting. YouTube says metrics such as click-through rate, average view duration and retention are calculated as before, and that recommendations did not change. On pay, the Help page says Partner Program earnings are still based on engaged views and engaged watch hours, and eligibility on qualified views. Qualified Shorts views are the engaged views of public Shorts.
Report both numbers and label them. Public views answer how many starts; engaged views answer how many stayed, and mixing them is how a weak hook looks like a distribution win. The longer walkthrough of the cutover is engaged views after the 24 August view change; the first-frame rule has its own page, YouTube counts a view from the first frame.
In practice
- Compare year-over-year on engaged views, not on the public counter, or the August 2026 cutover will look like a growth story.
- If public views rose and engaged views did not, the hook is being exposed and skipped.
- Earnings and retention still sit on the engaged side of the split; Partner Program eligibility uses qualified views.
Engaged views: common questions
What are engaged views on YouTube?
An engaged view is a view where the viewer clicked to watch or kept watching past the initial seconds. YouTube kept its old definition of a view under this name when it began counting public views from the first frame on 24 August 2026.
What is the difference between views and engaged views?
Since 24 August 2026 a public view is counted the moment a video starts to play. An engaged view needs the viewer to click to watch or to keep watching past the initial seconds. Hover autoplays and Shorts that are swiped away straight after they start can add public views without adding engaged views.
How are engaged views calculated?
YouTube describes them as clicking to watch or watching past the initial seconds, and neither its Help page nor its blog post gives a number of seconds, so there is no exact cut-off to work to. For Shorts that count toward Partner Program thresholds, loops are not included.
Do engaged views affect YouTube earnings?
Yes. YouTube's Help page says Partner Program earnings are still based on engaged views and engaged watch hours, and that eligibility is still based on qualified views. It says the change to how public views are counted does not affect either.
The mistake to avoid
Pasting the public view count into a sponsor deck after 24 August 2026. You are reporting starts, not stays.

Engaged Views Meaning: Why YouTube Shows Two Counts
Engaged views meaning: someone stayed past the first frame. Public views now count from frame one; pay and YPP still use engaged. Do not mix the columns.

Retention curve
Retention curve meaning: how many starters are still watching at each second. Watch time is the area under that curve.
Hook rate
Hook rate meaning: the share of people shown a video who are still watching a few seconds in. It grades the opening, not the body.
Completion rate
Completion rate is the share of people who watched a video all the way to its last frame — one number, unlike the full retention curve, and the one most short-form platforms weight heavily in distribution.
Qualified watch hours
Qualified watch hours are YouTube Partner Program watch time that counts toward monetization — not every hour a public view counter could imply.

Creative fatigue meaning: performance decay because the audience has seen the same piece too often, not because the piece changed.
