    Qualified watch hours meaning

Also called YouTube qualified watch hours, QWH.

Qualified watch hours are YouTube Partner Program watch time that counts toward monetization — not every hour a public view counter could imply.

YPP is a set of gates, not a vibe. Long-form still uses a subscriber count plus a watch-hour count; Shorts uses a separate view-milestone track. 'Qualified' is the word that does the work: not every playback, not every format, not every source of traffic is in the numerator. After 24 August 2026 the public view counter is an exposure number counted from the first frame, so a plan that treats 'views' and 'watch hours' as the same pile will over-count starts and under-count stays.

Watch hours are time, not starts. A Short that is swiped at second one can now write a public view and still add almost nothing to watch time. A long-form video that holds for ten minutes writes watch hours even if it writes fewer public views than a viral Short. The two instruments answer different questions, and the monetization plan has to name which gate it is aiming at rather than 'get more views.'

Inauthentic, repetitive, or mass-produced uploads can be excluded from the hours that count, which is YouTube’s inauthentic-content policy rather than a ban on AI as such. AI-assisted videos remain eligible when they carry the creator’s own vision and the required synthetic-media disclosure for realistic depictions of real people. A templated farm of near-identical clips is the disqualifier, not the model that rendered them.

    In practice

    • Track qualified watch hours in Studio, not the public view counter, when the goal is YPP.
    • Separate the Shorts milestone plan from the long-form watch-hour plan; they do not pay down the same meter.
    • If a burst of views added no watch hours, you bought exposure on a hook that does not hold — that is a retention problem, not a YPP bug.

    The mistake to avoid

Treating first-frame public views as progress toward watch-hour gates. Starts are not hours.

YouTube engaged views vs the public count

Engaged views mean the viewer stayed past the initial seconds. From 24 August 2026 a public YouTube view starts at frame one. Earnings follow engaged views.
