Hook rate asks who is still there a few seconds in. Hold rate asks who is still there once that audition is over. The two numbers diagnose different cuts. A cliff at second two is a hook problem. A slow leak from second five to the end is a hold problem: pacing, a claim that did not pay off, a pattern that never interrupts, a talking head that does not change the picture. Completion rate is the share who reach the last frame. Hold rate is the path there.
Short-form platforms weight the whole shape. A clip that hooks and then bleeds will still write first-frame views and still fail engaged views, watch time, and Rewards qualification. A clip that opens quietly and then holds can look weak on hook rate and still pay, especially on YouTube long-form where average view duration is the area under the curve, not the opening spike.
You cannot read hold rate off a like count. You read it on the retention curve: the slope after the hook. Versely reports at the post level across connected accounts; the second-by-second curve still lives in each platform's studio. What you bring back is the decision — a shorter body, a pattern interrupt, a cutaway, a line removed.
In practice
- Split the curve at the hook window. The first drop and the later slope are different jobs.
- If hook rate is fine and completion is not, cut the middle, do not recast the opening.
- A pattern interrupt — a new shot, a new claim, a new number — is the usual hold fix, not a louder voiceover.
The mistake to avoid
Fixing a hold problem by rewriting the hook. The people you are losing already stayed for the opening. The body lost them.

Hook rate
Hook rate meaning: the share of people shown a video who are still watching a few seconds in. It grades the opening, not the body.
Retention curve
Retention curve meaning: how many starters are still watching at each second. Watch time is the area under that curve.
Completion rate
Completion rate is the share of people who watched a video all the way to its last frame — one number, unlike the full retention curve, and the one most short-form platforms weight heavily in distribution.
Swipe-away
A swipe-away is a short-form skip: the viewer leaves before the clip holds. After YouTube's first-frame rule it can still write a public view.
Creative fatigue
Creative fatigue meaning: performance decay because the audience has seen the same piece too often, not because the piece changed.
