    Swipe-away meaning

Also called Swipe off, Skip, Scroll-past.

A swipe-away is a short-form skip: the viewer leaves before the clip holds. After YouTube's first-frame rule it can still write a public view.

On TikTok, Reels, and Shorts the unit of rejection is a thumb. The viewer does not press stop. They replace you with the next file. That event is the inverse of hook rate: the share who did not stay through the opening window. It is also how a first-frame view and an engaged view diverge. A Short that is swiped at second one can now write a public YouTube view and still add almost nothing to watch time, Rewards qualification, or the engaged counter.

The cause is usually in the first second, not the third act. A cold open that does not name the payoff, a talking head that has not started speaking, a caption that is unreadable at phone size, a pattern the feed has already seen this hour. Pattern interrupt and a burned-in hook line are the usual counter, because the swipe happens on mute as often as with sound.

Do not diagnose a swipe-away with a like count. Likes write after a stay. The skip is over before they can. Read hook rate, the opening of the retention curve, and — on YouTube after 24 August 2026 — the gap between public views and engaged views. A gap that opened at the cutover is a skip story, not a distribution win.

    In practice

    • Watch the first second on mute at phone size. If you would swipe, the feed will.
    • If public views rose and engaged views did not, you are being exposed and skipped.
    • Fix the opening frame, the first caption line, and the first sound together. The swipe judges all three at once.

    The mistake to avoid

Reading a pile of new views after August 2026 as proof the hook improved. First-frame starts count the swipe too.
