On 24 August 2026 YouTube changed the public view counter on every format. A view now registers when playback starts, from the first frame (YouTube community post, 17 August 2026). That number is exposure. It is what you see next to the title. It is not how YouTube pays, and it is not how Studio still calculates click-through rate, average view duration, or retention.
Engaged views kept the old meaning: someone stayed, or they chose to watch. The two counters diverge where the retention curve falls in the opening seconds — hover autoplays that never become a watch, Shorts that get swiped, cold opens that lose the room. Those events now write a public view. They do not write an engaged view. A video that used to 'fail to get views' can now 'get views' while still failing every metric that pays.
Qualified watch hours sit on the engaged side of the split. A Short swiped at second one can write a first-frame view and add almost nothing to watch time. Put first-frame views in the reach column. Put engaged views and watch hours in the performance column. Mixing them is how a weak hook looks like a distribution win after the cutover.
In practice
- Compare year-over-year on engaged views, not on the public counter, or August 2026 will look like a growth story.
- If public views rose and engaged views did not, the hook is being exposed and skipped.
- Do not paste the public view count into a sponsor deck without saying it is first-frame starts.
The mistake to avoid
Treating a first-frame view as a stay. It is a start. The stay has a different name: engaged view.

YouTube engaged views vs the public count
Engaged views mean the viewer stayed past the initial seconds. From 24 August 2026 a public YouTube view starts at frame one. Earnings follow engaged views.

Engaged views
Engaged views are YouTube views where the viewer clicked to watch or kept watching past the initial seconds. Public views now count from the first frame.
Qualified watch hours
Qualified watch hours are YouTube Partner Program watch time that counts toward monetization — not every hour a public view counter could imply.
Hook rate
Hook rate meaning: the share of people shown a video who are still watching a few seconds in. It grades the opening, not the body.
Swipe-away
A swipe-away is a short-form skip: the viewer leaves before the clip holds. After YouTube's first-frame rule it can still write a public view.
Retention curve
Retention curve meaning: how many starters are still watching at each second. Watch time is the area under that curve.
