The player does not wait. A Reel, a Short, a TikTok — the file starts, the speaker is talking, and the device is silent until a tap. Closed captions and platform-native captions are a track the viewer may never enable. Burned-in captions are pixels, so the line is there whether anyone asked. That is why short-form went to burn-in, and why a sidecar delivered as the whole caption job is a file the feed will not show.
Sound-on strategy is the other half of the same brief: something should be gained when the sound comes on, not merely duplicated. Design the muted cut first — first frame, burned hook line, readable pack — then add the line, the hit, the native-audio bake that rewards unmute. Hook rate is measured on people who never chose you and often never heard you. A cold-open that only works as a spoken setup fails this surface by construction.
Native-audio generates do not change the mute. A perfect bake still ships into a silent player. If the claim is in the voice and not on the picture, the thumb has already moved. Watch every cut with the volume down at phone size before you watch it with the volume up.
In practice
- Burn the hook line into frame one. Do not wait for the voiceover to land the claim.
- Test the cut muted on a phone, not on a desktop with speakers on.
- Keep essential type out of the bottom chrome; mute viewers are reading the burn, not the platform CC toggle.
The mistake to avoid
Uploading an SRT and calling the ad captioned for a feed. Mute autoplay will not open the track.

Sound-on strategy
Sound-on strategy is designing a video to reward viewers who have audio on — trending sound, a well-timed line, music that pays off — rather than leaving sound as decoration over a piece that already works muted.
Hook rate
Hook rate meaning: the share of people shown a video who are still watching a few seconds in. It grades the opening, not the body.
