Television sets used to crop the picture. Title-safe was an inner rectangle so credits and captions survived that crop; action-safe was a larger rectangle for anything you could not bear to lose. The percentages moved as overscan shrank from analogue 4:3 into HD, and they were always about the display eating the edge of the frame. A delivery spec that still asks for title-safe is asking for that inner rectangle, not for TikTok's like column.
Social safe-area is chrome drawn on top of a full-frame file: username, caption strip, buttons, shop tab, and — on YouTube Shorts since May 2026 — an AI overlay label. Nothing is cropped. Something is covered. Copying a broadcast title-safe diagram onto a 9:16 Reel leaves type sitting under the caption strip and calls it compliant. The two-line limit is the captioning habit that keeps a cue from becoming a block that walks into that chrome. Check the current UI. The region moves.
If you deliver both a broadcast master and a Shorts cut, you have two placement passes. Title-safe on the 16:9. Safe-area on the vertical. Captions that were fine in the middle of a widescreen frame can sit in the thumb zone once you reframe. Re-check; do not scale the old rectangle.
In practice
- When a broadcast spec says title-safe, keep type inside that inner rectangle — it is overscan, not UI.
- When the cut is a Reel or a Short, ignore the TV diagram and keep type off the current platform chrome.
- After a reframe, re-place captions. Safe-title and safe-area do not survive a crop by analogy.
The mistake to avoid
Using a title-safe overlay from an old NLE as a TikTok guide. You are solving yesterday's overscan and missing today's buttons.
Where you will run into it
- Add Captions to a Video — Speech in, styled subtitles out — no manual timing.
- Add a Text Overlay to a Video — Your words, placed exactly where you want them.

Safe area
A safe area is the part of a vertical frame a platform's own interface will not cover — profile name, caption line, like and share buttons all sit outside it — and text or a face placed inside it is routinely hidden from the viewer entirely.
Two-line limit
The two-line limit is the captioning habit of keeping a cue to two rows so type stays readable and clear of platform chrome on a vertical frame.
Hook rate
Hook rate meaning: the share of people shown a video who are still watching a few seconds in. It grades the opening, not the body.
Retention curve
Retention curve meaning: how many starters are still watching at each second. Watch time is the area under that curve.
Creative fatigue
Creative fatigue meaning: performance decay because the audience has seen the same piece too often, not because the piece changed.
