Caption line length is how many characters sit on one row — Latin-script houses often work near 42, not as a law the file format enforces. The two-line limit is how many of those rows you stack. A third line on a 9:16 frame is a paragraph. It covers the mouth, it walks into the like column, and it collides with the username strip. Safe area is that collision named as a region. Reading speed is whether the stack can be finished in the time it stays up. A two-line cue at 40 CPS is still unreadable; a one-line cue that sits in the chrome is unreadable for a different reason.
Auto captions ignore both limits. A speaker who does not pause produces a 90-character wrap that becomes three rows at phone size. The pass is editorial: split at a clause, keep a name or a URL on one line, never hyphenate the product spelling to win the cap. Karaoke and word-highlight still occupy the same block of the frame; the accent moving does not make a third line legal.
Broadcast two-line practice predates TikTok. Social just made the chrome denser. Safe-title is the older, inner rectangle for TV overscan — a different crop. Do not copy an 80% title-safe diagram onto a Shorts frame and call the caption placed. Check the current UI, keep essential type out of the bottom fifth and the button rail, and treat two lines as a ceiling, not a target.
In practice
- Split long clauses rather than wrapping a third row or shrinking the font until three rows fit.
- Place the block above the platform's bottom chrome, not in it.
- Re-check after a reframe. A 16:9 two-liner can become a three-liner in 9:16 without any words changing.
The mistake to avoid
Shrinking type to keep a paragraph on two lines. At phone size the line is still too long, and now it is also too small.

Caption line length
Caption line length is how many characters sit on one cue. Latin-script lines are commonly kept near 42 characters so a phone can still read them.
Safe area
A safe area is the part of a vertical frame a platform's own interface will not cover — profile name, caption line, like and share buttons all sit outside it — and text or a face placed inside it is routinely hidden from the viewer entirely.
Reading speed
Caption reading speed is how fast on-screen words arrive, in words per minute. A cue gone before it can be read is a timing error, not a style one.
Safe-title
Safe-title is the broadcast inner frame that keeps type off TV overscan; social safe-area is a different problem — platform buttons, not a CRT crop.
Hook rate
Hook rate meaning: the share of people shown a video who are still watching a few seconds in. It grades the opening, not the body.
