Views measure who was shown the file. Shares measure who decided someone else should see it. Dividing them is how you stop a large account from looking 'viral' when it is only large. A thousand sends on a million plays is a 0.1% share rate; a hundred sends on two thousand plays is 5%, and that is the clip that can leave the room. Share of voice is a different object — category conversation against named rivals — and it is not this ratio.
The creative that shares is usually a claim, a joke, or a proof someone wants attributed to themselves in a chat. A testimonial with a specific outcome, an unboxing of a product people already argue about, a hook-body-CTA that ends on a line worth repeating. Utility clips harvest saves; identity clips harvest shares. Mixing the two numbers in one KPI is how a recipe account gets briefed to 'go viral' and then ships another listicle.
Compare inside one surface and one length. A stitch and a standalone, a Reel and a long-form YouTube, a first-frame view and an engaged view — the denominators are not the same pile. Seeding into a community is a send you did yourself; it does not count as organic shares-per-view, and treating it as such is how a Discord drop looks like a feed win.
In practice
- Always write the ratio, not the raw share count, when accounts differ in size.
- Compare share rate inside one platform and length band, not across a Reel and a ten-minute watch.
- If you seeded the file into a group chat, keep those sends out of the organic ratio.
The mistake to avoid
Calling a post viral because the share count is a big integer. On a big view pile that integer can still be a rounding error.

Saves
Saves are bookmarks of a post — Instagram saves, TikTok favourites — a ranking signal that the viewer wants the file again, not just a like.
Share of voice
Share of voice is a brand's portion of the total conversation in its category — mentions, tags and citations relative to named competitors — tracked over time as a competitive gauge rather than a per-post metric.
Seeding
Seeding is placing finished content into communities — subreddits, Discord servers, group chats — as a genuine contribution rather than an ad, so it earns distribution before or without any paid push.
Hook rate
Hook rate meaning: the share of people shown a video who are still watching a few seconds in. It grades the opening, not the body.
