    Watch time meaning

Also called Watch hours, Minutes watched.

Watch time is the total minutes people spent on a video — the area under the retention curve — not the public view count and not the completion rate.

A view is a start. Completion is a finish. Watch time is everything in between, summed. Two thousand people who each stay ten seconds write less watch time than two hundred who stay two minutes, which is why a viral Short and a long-form explainer cannot be compared on views and why YPP still uses hours, not starts. After 24 August 2026 the public YouTube view is a first-frame start, so a plan that treats 'views' and 'watch time' as the same pile will over-count exposure and under-count stays.

Qualified watch hours are the subset of this number that counts toward monetisation. Not every format, not every source of traffic, not every playback is in the numerator. Inauthentic or mass-produced uploads can be excluded. A Short swiped at second one can now write a public view and still add almost nothing here.

Average view duration is watch time divided by views — a mean, not a total. Hold rate and the retention curve tell you where the minutes went. Watch time is the headline that pays. It is also the number that punishes unearned runtime: a longer video only wins if people actually sit through the extra length.

    In practice

    • When the goal is YPP, track qualified watch hours, not the public view counter.
    • If views rose and watch time did not, you bought starts on a hook that does not hold.
    • Lengthen a video only when the extra minutes have a job. Watch time does not reward padding.

    The mistake to avoid

Chasing watch time by making everything longer. Unused minutes at the end of a curve are not hours. They are a slope.
