6 apps for a YouTube thumbnail, not Canva
Figma, Photoroom, Ideogram, Versely, ChatGPT Images, and Firefly make a YouTube thumb. Pick by layout, cutout, type, row, quoted title, or brand-safe gen.
You have a cut. You need a 16:9 still that earns the click. That is a thumbnail job, and six apps will take it without opening Canva. Figma is the frame you still typeset. Photoroom is the cutout of the face or the object. Ideogram is the lettered still. Versely is the model row: a cheap draft, a type plate, or a quoted title. ChatGPT Images is the instruction still with the line you actually wrote. Adobe Firefly is the commercially safer generate if the channel is a brand, not a bedroom. This page is that list. It is not "best thumbnail 2026." It is not a Canva roast with five decoys.
YouTube's own custom thumbnail help (read 20 September 2026) wants 16:9 for long-form, recommends 3840 x 2160, a 640-pixel minimum width, JPG or PNG, and a verified account. A Canva template that already looks like ten other channels is not a spec miss. It is a feed miss. Leave the template. Pick the app that matches the still.
What this list is for
The job is one click still for a video you already have, or will have by upload day. Face plus three to five words. Product plus a short claim. A still that survives a 320-pixel-wide shelf. Not a channel art banner. Not a Shorts 9:16 cover (that is a different ratio and a different crop). Not a carousel. If the file is a deck of ten matching slides, that is another list.
Canva is the app this page is leaving. Layout is Canva's product. A YouTube thumb is a small photograph with a headline, judged next to other photographs. Magic Resize will happily give you 16:9. It will also give you the same rounded badge and the same stock grin everyone else already used. If the channel is a brand template factory, stay in Canva. If the channel is trying to look like a person in a room, do not.
Proof the letters at 100 percent before you upload. A cousin spelling in the pixels is the title you cannot fix in Studio. Overlay type you can still edit. Baked type you cannot.
The six apps
1. Figma. Start here if the letters have to stay yours. Figma's pricing page (read 20 September 2026) lists a Professional Full seat at $16 a month with 3,000 AI credits. Starter is free at 150 credits a day, up to 500 a month. Figma's Design AI help (May 2026 agent note, re-read 20 September) includes Make image, Remove background, Expand image, and Weave tools on that shared credit pool. The point of Figma on this list is not the generate. It is a 3840 x 2160 frame, real type, a safe area you drew, and an export that is still a layout. Generate the face somewhere else. Set "I QUIT MY JOB" in a font you own. Do not ask Weave to letter the hook if you might change the wording on Tuesday.
2. Photoroom. Open Photoroom when the still is a person or a pack and the background is the problem. Photoroom's pricing page (read 20 September 2026, yearly toggle) lists Pro at 8,000 AI credits and 1,000 exports, Max at 25,000 and 3,000, Ultra at 75,000 and 10,000. Independent reads of the monthly stickers (PulseSignal, 14 September 2026) put Pro at $12.99, Max at $34.99, Ultra at $99. Background Remover is a core tool on paid plans. It does not draw from the credit pool. AI Images and Edit with AI do. Cut the face. Drop it on a flat colour. Proof the hair edge. Then typeset in Figma, or generate a plate behind the cutout. Photoroom is not a YouTube layout app. It will not give you 16:9 safe area. It will give you a subject that pops at fingernail size.
3. Ideogram. Open Ideogram when the thumbnail is the words. Ideogram 4.0 shipped 3 June 2026. The Ideogram 4.0 model page still sells brand work and readable headlines. Ideogram's pricing (read 20 September 2026, yearly) lists Plus at $20 a month ($15 billed yearly, $180) with 1,000 priority credits, Pro at $60 ($42 yearly, $504) with 3,500 and batch generation. Unused subscription credits do not roll. Top-ups do. Quote the string: the thumbnail reads "I QUIT MY JOB". One text element. Proof at 100 percent. Ideogram will not replace Figma if you needed to restyle the type next week. It will replace a generate that drew word-shaped texture.
4. Versely. Versely sits here because the still is often three different meters, and you do not want three vendor logins for a Thursday upload. The door is text to image, or AI thumbnail generator if you are composing a cover on purpose. Nano Banana 2 is 4 credits discounted (7 full), ultra-fast, text-to-image plus edit-image, up to 14 references. That is the draft loop: crop tests, face tests, "is this even a thumb." Ideogram V4 is 5 credits flat, posters and logos, accurate text rendering listed, 16:9 on the card. That is the lettered plate. GPT Image 2 Text to Image is 9 credits at SD/HD discounted (17 full) and 17 at 4K discounted (33 full). That is the instruction still when you quoted the title in the prompt and you will proof it. Imagen 4 is shut down. Google's Gemini API page (updated 17 September 2026) says the family is gone. Do not open a leftover Imagen card because an old thumb post named Google. Versely is not Figma. It will not give you a type layer you can restyle. It is the app when you would rather pick a row than open a second image seat.
5. ChatGPT Images. Open ChatGPT when the brief is a paragraph and the failure mode is ignored instructions. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Images 2.0 / gpt-image-2 on 21 April 2026. OpenAI's ChatGPT pricing page (read 20 September 2026) lists Plus at $20 a month with expanded, faster image creation, and Pro as a higher-usage seat. Free is limited and slower. Thinking-level layouts sat behind paid at launch (TechCrunch, 21 April 2026). Quote the title. Describe the face you already have a release for, or attach the reference in the chat. Do not invent a guest you did not film. ChatGPT Images is a bad first app if you needed a cutout and a type layer. It is the right app when "three-quarter, yellow field, the line reads X, no extra props" has to survive as a sentence.
6. Adobe Firefly. Open Firefly when legal asked whether the generate is commercially safe. Adobe's Firefly page (read 20 September 2026) lists Firefly Standard at $9.99 a month with 2,000 generative credits, and Firefly Pro at $19.99 with 4,000, Photoshop on web, and Express Premium. Adobe's own models are trained on licensed Adobe Stock and public-domain work. Outputs carry Content Credentials. Partner models (GPT Image, Nano Banana, Flux) sit in the same app and burn credits differently. Do not treat a partner generate as an indemnified Adobe still. Firefly is a bad first app if you needed Ideogram's lettering instinct. It is the right app when the channel is a brand and the still has to survive a rights review.
How to pick without six thumbnail seats
You do not need six thumbnail seats. You need one still.
- Already in Figma, and the hook might change: stay. Generate the face elsewhere. Typeset there. Export there.
- The still is a person or a bottle, and the room is noise: Photoroom, then Figma.
- The still is the headline: Ideogram, or Ideogram V4 on Versely at 5 credits. Proof the letters.
- Drafts, a quoted title, and one bill: Versely. Banana 2 at 4 credits until a file would survive Slack. Then Ideogram V4 or GPT Image 2 T2I.
- The brief is a long instruction and you already pay for ChatGPT Plus: ChatGPT Images. Do not also buy Ideogram "just in case" the same week.
- Legal wants Adobe's training story: Firefly's own models, not the partner row.
Two apps is a stack. Figma plus one generator covers most Thursday uploads. The generator is Ideogram, Versely, ChatGPT Images, or Firefly, depending on the sentence above. Photoroom is the cutout, not a second generate. Adding all five "for options" is how a click still becomes five invoices.
Credits are not dollars on Versely. Do not convert 4, 5, 9, or 17 into a USD figure. Figma, Photoroom, Ideogram, ChatGPT, and Firefly publish USD seats. Those are their meters. Quote them as vendor prices, dated to the day you read the page.
After the still is a thumb
Upload in YouTube Studio. Custom thumbs need a verified account. Shorts want 9:16, not this 16:9 file. YouTube's help page is the spec, not a Twitter crop.
Leave room for the timestamp and the duration badge. A face that sits on the lower-right gets eaten. A line of type that sits on the lower-third gets eaten. Design the still as a poster that will be small, not as a frame grab from the cut.
A generated face that is not in the video is a bait thumb. Community Guidelines still apply. Repeat offenses can freeze custom thumbs. If the video is you at a desk, the thumb is you at a desk. Photoroom the real still. Do not swap in a cousin.
When the job is a model row and a quoted line, sign up and run the still. When the job is type you will restyle, stay in Figma. The list is six apps. The upload is one PNG.
FAQ
Can I skip the face and just use type?
Sometimes. A type-only thumb works when the title is the joke and the channel already has a look. Ideogram or Figma with real type. Most browse pages are faces. If you have a still of the person, use it. Type on a flat field is a choice, not a default.
Why is Versely in the middle of the list, not first?
Because this page is the job, not a homepage. Banana 2, Ideogram V4, and GPT Image 2 T2I are real thumbnail rows. They are not a replacement for Figma's type layer or Photoroom's cutout. If you wanted one bill and a picker, Versely is the row. If you wanted a layout you can restyle on Tuesday, it is not.
Will YouTube reject a generated thumbnail?
Not for being generated. It will reject Community Guidelines misses, and it will freeze custom thumbs if you keep shipping bait. A generated still of a scene that is not in the video is the risk. Match the cut. Proof the letters. Then upload.
