    TikTok 10-minute upload limit

TikTok accepts uploads up to 10 minutes for most accounts. That is an upload cap, not a retention target. Cut for the hold, not the ceiling.

    Versely Team••9 min read

TikTok's common upload ceiling is 10 minutes. That is how long a file can be and still go through. It is not how long a file should be. Retention is a different object: whether anyone is still there at second 12. This page is the cap versus the hold. It is not a Creativity Program explainer, not a payout-rate post, and not a C2PA labelling post.

OpusClip's 2026 short-form roundup lists TikTok uploads to 10 minutes next to Shorts at 3 minutes and Reels at 20. Use that as a ceiling map. Do not use it as a creative target. A 10-minute TikTok that loses the room at the first swipe has used the cap and wasted the hold.

Upload cap versus what the camera will record

"10 minutes" is a bundle of slightly different lids, and collapsing them is how people fight the uploader.

In-app recording. The TikTok camera has historically exposed length presets (15 seconds, 60 seconds, 3 minutes, 10 minutes). Ten minutes is the long in-app record on accounts that have it. If your camera still stops at 3 minutes, you are looking at the record path you were given, not at a broken upload.

File upload. Most accounts can upload a pre-recorded file up to 10 minutes. That is the number to plan a Versely export around if you need one file that every account on the team can post.

Longer uploads on some accounts. Coverage through 2025–2026 describes 60-minute uploads rolling out to some accounts and regions. Treat that as account-specific until your own uploader accepts the hour. Do not build a workflow that requires 60 minutes because a thread said "TikTok is long-form now."

Schedulers and the Content Posting API. TikTok's developer documentation has stated that all creators can post 3-minute videos, some can post 5- or 10-minute videos, and the longest video a developer can send via the initialize Upload Video endpoint is 10 minutes. If you publish through a third-party scheduler, 10 minutes is the hard API ceiling regardless of what the native app might one day allow you. Plan the master at 10 or under if a tool, not a thumb, will post it.

File size is a second cap and it is not this page's subject except to say: a 10-minute 4K file will fail on a phone even when the duration is legal. Duration and megabytes are different errors. Compress or upload from desktop when the file is the problem. Do not trim a good 90-second cut to 20 seconds because you hit a size lid; that is the wrong surgery.

Aspect is still 9:16 if you want the file to fill the player. Landscape will letterbox. The 10-minute cap does not make landscape native.

What actually retains is not the ceiling

TikTok has not published an official "best length." Third-party posts that name 21–34 seconds as the algorithm's favourite window are not TikTok documentation. Do not treat them as a spec. Do treat completion as a physical fact of a swipe player: if the viewer leaves, the rest of the file did not happen.

The cap tempts three bad cuts:

Filling the tank. You had a 40-second point. You generated four more 15-second inserts because Seedance will give you 15 seconds and the uploader will take 10 minutes. The file is now 2:10 of the same point. The hold does not improve because the file got longer. It usually gets worse.

Uploading the podcast. A 9-minute sit-down can be a legal TikTok. It is a legal TikTok that starts in a player designed to skip. If the first sentence does not state the claim, you used the cap to host an audio file. Either cut a 45-second claim and link the sit, or accept that this post is for people who already follow and will tap with intent.

Mistaking minutes for authority. A 7-minute explainer is not more true than a 30-second one. It is more minutes. If the extra minutes are a second example, a caveat, a demo that has to complete, keep them. If they are throat-clearing, they cost you the hold.

Practical test before you export: watch the first 8 seconds on mute with burned-in captions. If you would swipe, the rest of the 9:50 is decoration. Fix the open. Then, and only then, decide whether minute two is a demo that earns its time.

Safe area does not relax because the file is long. UI chrome still eats the bottom. Caption the whole timeline if you expect anyone to stay muted past the hook. A 10-minute file with captions on the first sentence only is a mute-off demand you will not get.

This is also where AI generation has to stay honest. Veo 3.1 sells 4 / 6 / 8 seconds. Seedance 2.0 sells up to 15. You stitch a TikTok from beats. The 10-minute number is TikTok's lid, not a model enum. Assemble until the sentence is done. Stop.

    Distinct from Creativity Program rules

The Creativity Program is a monetization and eligibility regime. The upload cap is a file-acceptance regime. Mixing them produces two common errors.

Error one: "I posted 10 minutes so it should pay." Program eligibility is not "used the full upload." The Creativity Program rule on AI content, as the 2026 recaps from SocialScale Hub, Vexub and Fliki describe it, is about AI labels: AI content is eligible if the built-in AI label is used; undisclosed AI can mean removal or program suspension; labelled AI pays the same rate. Originality and templated spam are the ranking and program problems. Length is not a substitute for a label, and a label is not a substitute for a hold. The label is not a ranking penalty; unoriginal templated content is. That sentence is policy, and it is not this page's subject except as a boundary.

Error two: "The Program wants long videos, so I should always upload 10 minutes." Program rules about minimum length, if they apply to your account, are Program rules. They are not the upload spec. Meet a minimum by making a complete piece that happens to clear it, not by padding a 20-second joke with 40 seconds of end cards. Padding to chase a threshold is how completion falls and how the post looks templated — which is the thing the Program actually cares about.

This page will not recap payout rates, RPM, or the originality score. Those are other posts. If you are here because an upload failed, look at duration and size. If you are here because a post did not pay, look at Program eligibility and labels, not at whether you "used all 10 minutes."

Article 50 disclosure for EU audiences is also not the upload cap. A 10-minute file of a realistic synthetic person still needs the visible label at first exposure where that law applies. Length does not exempt you. The disclosure template is the copy-paste object. Put it on the file you actually ship, 30 seconds or 10 minutes.

How to cut a 10-minute file without wasting the first 20 seconds

When you genuinely need the long upload — a class, a live recap, a recipe that fails if you skip a step — cut it as a long video that happens to be vertical, not as a Short that got ambitious.

    1. Write the promise in the first line of captions. "Three mistakes that crack a sourdough crust" is a 10-minute recipe. "Hey guys so today I wanted to chat" is a 10-minute swipe-away.
    2. Chapter with on-screen text, not with hope. If minute 4 is a new step, say so on screen. The TikTok player is not YouTube chapters.
    3. Generate inserts, do not generate the sit. Record the talk or the hands. Use the AI video generator for the cutaways you cannot film. Stitch. Do not ask Kling for a 10-minute lecture.
    4. Export two files when the audience is two audiences. A 45-second claim for For You. A 8-minute class for people who tap through or follow. The cap allows both. It does not require one file to be both.
    5. Listen to the hold you already have. If your last ten posts die at 7 seconds, a 10-minute upload will not repair the open. Fix the open on a 20-second file first.

Open a studio account at Sign up when the next export is a captioned vertical cut sized to the sentence, with 10 minutes as a lid you might never touch.

The upload cap is a door. Retention is whether anyone walks in and stays. Creativity Program is whether the door is a paid door and whether you labelled the synthetic media. Keep those three sentences separate and the 10-minute file gets easier.

    FAQ

Can every TikTok account upload 10 minutes?

Most accounts can upload about 10 minutes; some cameras still stop earlier; some accounts see longer uploads. Schedulers using TikTok's posting API are documented with a 10-minute maximum. If you need a file every teammate can post, 10 minutes is the safe master.

Will a 10-minute video get more For You distribution because it is longer?

TikTok has not documented that. Do not invent it. A longer file has more seconds in which a viewer can leave. Cut for the hold. Use 10 minutes when the piece actually needs them.

Is this the same as Creativity Program length?

No. The Program is eligibility, labels, and originality. The 10-minute figure is what the uploader will accept. Meet each rule on its own page. Padding a short piece to look "Program-shaped" is how you hurt the hold and look templated.
