Do not cross-post a watermarked download

TikTok originality downranks Instagram/YouTube watermarks. Export clean per platform.

The file you downloaded from Instagram is not a master. It is a copy with someone else's chrome in the corner — often your own chrome, which does not help. TikTok treats that watermark as a signal that the clip was made somewhere else. Originality ranking does not care that you are the author. It cares that the pixels arrived wearing another app.

Export clean per platform. Do not round-trip a download.

This is the watermark rule, not a nine-platform content plan. Adaptation of hooks and captions is cross-posting brand videos without looking lazy. Shop-specific originality — stolen reviews, faked features — is TikTok Shop's unoriginal-content rule. Here the only object is the mark in the frame.

    What the mark actually is

A platform watermark is burned-in UI: a username, a logo, a follow badge, a "shared from Reels" tell. Saving from an in-app share sheet or a "download this video" button usually bakes it in, and often downscales the file at the same time. Re-uploading that file is the definition of a watermarked repost.

TikTok's originality and recommendation behaviour treats watermarked foreign-platform uploads as unoriginal or recycled. Instagram lists watermarked content among conditions of ineligible-for-recommendation material. YouTube Shorts does not need a watermark to know a clip is a screen-recording of TikTok; the caption style and the bouncing username are enough, and the mark makes it obvious.

The common defence — "it's my clip" — is irrelevant to a classifier that is looking for another platform's furniture. Authorship is not in the corner logo. It is in a clean export from the tool that made the file.

    The failure is upstream

Removing a watermark after the fact is the wrong fix. You will crop, blur, or smear a corner, and you will still have a transcoded, downscaled, already-posted artifact. The right fix is never letting the master carry platform branding.

Generate or edit in a tool that exports a clean master. Versely does not burn a watermark on any plan. The MP4 you download from the project is the file you upload.

Do not use a platform download as an input to another platform. "Save from TikTok, post to Reels" is how Reels learns you are lazy. "Save from Reels, post to TikTok" is how TikTok learns the same. "Save from Shorts, post everywhere" is three copies of a YouTube username.

If an editor or an AI app burns its own logo on the free tier, that logo is also a watermark. Third-party marks get the same originality bucket as Instagram's. Pay the tier that exports clean, or finish in a tool that does.

Version from the master, not from a live post. One clean 9:16 (or a 16:9 master you crop from) is the source. Each platform gets an upload of that source, or a recrop of it, never a download of a previous upload.

What to do with a clip that is already marked

If the only copy you have is a watermarked download, you do not have a cross-post. You have a corrupted master.

Regenerate or re-export from the original timeline. If the original timeline is gone, you are in recovery: crop only if the mark sits in a region you can lose without wrecking composition, and accept that you are still shipping a transcode. Do not build a "watermark remover" step into the weekly workflow. That step existing is the workflow admitting it started in the wrong place.

For a campaign you intend to run on TikTok and Reels and Shorts, the production constraint is the same as a legal one: the deliverable is three clean files, or one clean file uploaded three times. A single TikTok-branded download is not three files.

Originality is wider than the corner

A clean file can still be unoriginal. A stolen product review with the watermark cropped off is still someone else's review. A Shop video that fakes a feature is still a Shop problem. The watermark rule does not replace those rules. It is the one you trip over when the content is yours and the export path was sloppy.

Check the corner before it goes out. If you can read another app's name, do not post. Export again from the master.

    FAQ

Does TikTok downrank my own watermarked video if I am the creator?

It downranks the file, not your feelings about authorship. A download that carries Instagram or YouTube chrome looks like a repost. Export the clean master and upload that. Being the author does not make the username in the corner original.

What if I screen-record instead of downloading?

Worse. You pick up UI, bitrate dirt, and often a watermark. Screen-recording is not a master. Use the original export.

Do I need a different recrop for every platform, or is a clean 9:16 enough?

A clean 9:16 uploaded natively is already the originality fix. Recropping for safe zones and swapping the first three seconds is adaptation, and it helps, but it is a different job. Never skip the clean export in order to spend time on a hook variant of a marked file.

Can I blur the watermark and post?

Do not. Blur is still a tell, and the file is still a transcode of a posted copy. Go back to the timeline. If there is no timeline, regenerate. A blurred corner is how a team advertises that it does not have a master.
